I'm not sure my review is a full endorsement of this game. It's based on my preferences (much like Follia; Dear Father, which will come up in this review) but maybe it'll help you out. Hell, I even kind of hate this game too but there are also things I like about it as well. Basically, Today is my Birthday is a bad 80s slasher flick that you play through. It's less Nightmare and The Prowler and more something that I feel is overrated but still enjoy like Prom Night. Yeah, that's the best I can do. You can slasherize me later when I'm taking out my trash. So you play as Thomas the photographer (who I do believe is voiced by the same actor as the friend Ryan in Follia; Dear Father, oh just you wait, I'm not done with Follia references yet) and he's got the bright idea to jump on his motorcycle and go to Wonder Park where he has great childhood memories of times with his father. He also decides to not put enough gas in his Harley and engage in every other horror cliche every written. I mean the plot cliches here are up the wazoo, just like in Follia. The clown enemies, the chainsaw maniac, the human organ collecting story, the short sprinting, etc. The gang's all here. All that's missing is having some university being behind all of the horrible organ collecting like in Follia. Maybe this is a prequel and we just don't know it? But for whatever reason I kept on playing. Graphically, we get a rundown park and its insides/surrounding areas looking particularly rundown n' foreboding. The forest is appropriately, falsely bright and sunny like a horror movie forest should sometimes be. It's not modern edge all up in your face the way the game is designed but it looks decent at its best and far too shiny at its worst like everything was polished with Turtle Wax. There's also cool intros for some of the major baddies and bosses that introduces who they are with a hand-drawn cartoon graphic appearing as well as their name. That's kind of cool. Animations are hit and miss, then they sink to downright terrible especially when the bad guys are talking and animating like strange CGI sock puppets. Their (the bad guys) voice-acting has to be up there with some of the most grating b.s. ever put on tape or a DAW. I enjoy the main hero actor and did in Follia as well. He's not overboard or too emotional but more of a solid, low-level WTF is going on here young man type. Honestly, he did fine with what was on offer here. The general atmospheric sounds work pretty well and the music, though goofy and clownish when you're in a chase is at least something to roll your eyes over with a laugh (I think I heard honking clown noses in the music). I covered sound here too. Let's move on. One of the main things I liked about this game is that it doesn't tell you where to go and I enjoyed exploring the oftentimes daunting, cluttered environments looking for that spare battery or extra note or that one more bullet I needed for the gun that would help me take on one of several boss characters. Some enemies are best dealt with by the camera flash though and the gun isn't going to help you out at all. The camera is a big part of the game in both combat as well as collecting evidence photos and even using it to light your way in case you run out of batteries. I enjoyed that the game included bosses and general combat/evasion with a limited tool set while you desperately stumble your way around the environments looking for that one clue or item you missed. There is an old school survival aspect here, whether you love the game or it hate. It's not just hide in a locker and pee yourself stuff. You do have to take a few beasties head on. Sadly, that taking monsters head-on aspect is murdered by sometimes glitchy environments and utterly stinkin' controls where Thomas can't clear a large soft drink on the ground with his normally super tall leaps. You'll get stuck on objects, you'll get irritated beyond belief that one time you have to make a rather tricky jump or fall to your dying death and you'll probably curse the day you were born over the final boss fight. That final boss fight requires you getting some distance on the mf'er using the environment, so you can get that next camera flash in and hurt him. I hate the hell out of somewhat liking this game, I'll tell you that much and that fight has much to do with it. Expect to try and jump while getting glitch stuck to certain objects and have your stamina run out every 15 seconds or less. So yeah, unless you are one of the rare people that happen to be my duplicate/clone or someone exactly like me, you shouldn't buy this game. If you happen to be in the category of me or related to me, Today is my Birthday is a frustrating good time if you can grab it on sale. Even I wouldn't have paid full price for this but for about 7 bucks, for whatever reason I about got my money's worth. It's a wavering 6/10 to me but the kind of 6/10 that I'd recommend to any fool like me.
The only thing that is scary about the game is the time that it takes to load the last checkpoint. Don't recommend to anyone.
This is unplayable. It is a struggle to get ANYTHING to work the way that it is supposed to. The art direction and environments are great, but impossible to enjoy with the extremely buggy gameplay.
I've decided to be nice and hold to my original plan of changing my previous negative review to a positive one if the developers held true to their word and repaired the late game bug that rendered the game unable to be completed, which, as of today, they have done. I just did a quick test and the previously inoperable switch in Chapter 3 is now functional. The oddly long load times after dying and on initial load-in are still long but seemed to have been improved slightly. Despite the previous issues encountered and a few minor nitpicks that I could still point out, the game is not without it's own brand of charm. The environments are effectively creepy and fairly well designed. The story is a bit cheesy but was the story really ever the point for a game like this...No, the point of these types of games is to wander around in a dark, creepy, crumbling environment while something sinister and murderous lurks in the shadows, something that could pop up and give chase at any moment. It's that kind of "constantly unsafe" pressure feeling that made the first Amnesia so great and it's the overarching point of all games in this walking sim/puzzle/horror/survival type genre. Very few games get that formula right because it's tricky. For most games the encounters and chase scenes are scripted to certain points, so once the player is aware of where the danger is then the unsafe pressure becomes less effective. If every game could pull it off the way Amnesia did then all would be right with the universe. Regardless, if you're going to give this a shot then do it while it's on sale because, unfortunately, it's just not a $15 game. But if it pops up on sale for 50% off then get a cold beer and some popcorn and have a go at it.
Today is my Birthday is a horror game I stumbled upon that i felt was going to be great. The screenshots and idea behind it are exactly my cup of tea. I LOVE spooky theme parks and wish more triple A games covered them, but I digress. So, I thought this game would be exactly what I wanted. I really want to like this game as a cheesy horror movie-style experience. And here's the thing, I DO like it, but... I don't love it. I wouldn't even say I like it a lot. It has the potential to be a GREAT game, but it just doesn't quite live up to it, unfortunately. Pros: - The overall atmosphere is great. The sound track is good, and the sound design is generally pretty nice. A few hiccups here and there but overall it's not what takes away from the experience. - The overall level design VISUALLY is pretty good. Stuff usually looks nice and you can tell a lot of care went into the sets in each chapter. - The Picture taking aspect is pretty fun. One of my loves for Outlast is the fact that you are recording your experiences with a camera, and I just wish you could watch it over if you wanted to. I like being able to look back at the random pictures I took. - Each enemy was charming and creepy enough, and I enjoyed that the area's around each one really felt like it was THEIRS. the little introduction each got was a nice touch, too. - Even though the story is goofy and some stuff doesn't quite make sense, I feel as though it fits for the cheesy 90's slasher horror movie vibe that the game gives off. I don't detract anything from the game for this, it just feels appropriate and is still very enjoyable. Cons: - Graphical weirdness. The depth of field which is on by default makes it seem like your character's eyesight is atrocious. It hurt my eyes until I turned it off, which improved how the game looked by quite a bit. While most stuff looks good, there are quite a few textures which just look bad, and a few areas that are clearly stuff you aren't supposed to go to but are just off the beaten path that look really unfinished. - The player's running is.... not good. I don't expect the main characters in every horror game to be dedicated athletes but I do hope that someone who plans to be walking a long distance has the basic human ability to jog more than 10 feet without getting so winded and exhausted that, even the adrenaline of being chased can't give him the energy to keep going. The stamina mechanic isn't bad, but it feels like the only reason it's so short with such a HARSH long cool down is because the enemy AI wouldn't be menacing enough without our hero almost passing out after a quick run down a hallway. - The enemy AI is pretty lackluster overall. The early area's with the dogs in it felt like the dogs were added in last moment as padding to give a slight threat to an area that really didn't need it. the bad dudes themselves either have object permanence issues or they simply stop caring after Thomas leaves their line of sight or gets out of 10 feet of them. - I hesitated to include this as others have, but just to have the full review up I will include it here too: it's really hard to find things and figure out what you are supposed to do, pretty often. I usually am pretty good at paying attention to my surroundings but I found i had to look up stuff a few times pretty early on because I just couldn't find it. Like, right after Thomas says "hey, I shouldn't get near that dog", turns out... we gotta get near the dog. I heard Thomas say this and, well, I obeyed. I didn't go near the dog. I stayed away. I was surprised to find that once I got TOO close to the dog, as in right in front of it's face, did Thomas say "now wait a second, there's something on it's collar." this wouldn't be a problem if there was a better indication that this was something we needed to do. This was just the oddest example i could think of, the game has a few instances of stuff like this, but this one felt the most..... odd. Overall, I really do want to love this game, and again I really do like it. It just has quite a few really glaring issues that unfortunately take away from the experience a lot. If some of the issues get fixed, which I have seen that this is something the dev is looking into, I feel like this would be an easy 9/10 if not a 10/10 experience for people who are looking for this style of game.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO E MAL OTIMIDADO
