Fantastic action platformer that just feels really good to play. Until you hit a difficulty wall and just keep dying. But overcoming that wall feels good. Until the next wall. Thankfully you get unlimited lives, and the normal checkpoints aren't far apart, it's the persistent checkpoints (where you can start again after quitting the game) that are much farther apart. You have to wonder why every checkpoint can't be persisted. Also the final boss has 3 forms, and while the (persisted!) checkpoint after the first form is a godsent, the fact that there's none after the second form leads to a lot of frustration. But if I didn't like the game, I wouldn't have pushed so hard as to finally beat it. Now maybe some day I'll come back and try to beat it with the newly unlocked character...
Tiny Barbarian is a fantastic retro throwback, one of my favourites alongside Volgarr The Viking and somewhere ahead of Cyber Shadow. It's a difficult game, in fact only 2.5% of players were up for beating the second chapter (there's 5). I don't want to overstate the difficulty though, it's not as demanding as games like Volgarr, Contra or Ghost N Goblins. In those games, every level frequently turns into a dance of inputs that need to be carried out correctly. The levels in Tiny Barbarian can be challenging, but are a walk in the park comparatively. This game isn't very punishing either, you're given plenty of checkpoints and infinite respawns. The bosses are the bigger gatekeepers; challenging, tough, but fair and fun to work out and I got through each of them after 15-20 minutes. The final boss of the game is on a whole other level though and would possibly earn a spot on a top 10 difficult boss list if I were to ever make one. I spent hours fighting it. I love when games give you one serious nightmare to master at the very end. Tiny Barbarian has a wonderful, charming chiptune soundtrack and makes clever use of audio, like how the title screen music kicks in at the start. The devs did great with the level design and mixing up the gameplay in different levels, something that I feel is crucial to keep a 2D sidescroller interesting. The space theme in Chapter 4 hijacks the game for longer than I'd have liked though. Unfortunately this brings me to comment on one of the final levels.. The mech-suit that you use later in the game is an absolute nightmare to control. The new controls aren’t explained, so you're forced to somehow workout and use some antiquated control schemes like ‘double-tap to run’. I had to alt tab and look online for how to cross some gaps, and it turns out that the mech has a high jump. I'd never have worked out the method to do it on my own. To do a high jump, you press and hold your jetpack button after jumping, while you are still ascending, near the very start of your jump. If you press too late, it does not work. Alt tabbing to watch a video is also how I discovered that my Mech could run, which after trying lots of things I eventually worked out was double-tap. Another issue I had was that whenever you press jump + hold up, your character exits your Mech. I’m often holding up when I jump already in games, often to ledge grab. The amount of times I accidentally jumped out of my suit.. On top of the poor controls, there's also an AI that is sometimes controlling the mech and it can get stuck and force you to suicide. My problems with this mech level were frustrating enough that it lowered my overall opinion of the game. It was a stain on an otherwise wonderful retro experience. Some people have pointed out the high pricetag of this game and left negative reviews and I went into Tiny Barbarian assuming that I would become one of them, but no. This game is quality, I don't regret a single penny. ..well OK maybe the pennies that went into that awful mech level.
This game falls far short in more ways than one. Enemies are usually just a bit too high and a bit too far and they spam attacks from safe distances. The bosses are even worse with range and speed superior to yours and 90% of the time the only practical way to kill them is to rely on cheese strats, especially since most love hanging above you where you normally can't reach. That's not challenge, that's annoyance. What made me quit this game outright cold turkey was jank mechanics. You're supposed to go up this series of falling platforms by holding Up to grab one platform after the next, but they're spaced just a bit too far apart and unless you're frame-perfect, it doesn't work and you're stuck. That is inexcusable... Avoid this game.
A good game released in 2013 that seems to have failed to find its audience (only ~105 reviews in 2021) and became a "hidden gem". But it's no wonder... When I got the game in a humble bundle in 2014 it still had only half of its content. I played the first 2/4 episodes that were available and waited for the next episodes without news for... years. And while I've given up to see the next parts of the game, in 2017 the game finally got the episodes 3&4 without much noise, but in the same time its price become ridiculous: 27,99€. Delayed development, overpriced, awful new trailer... Yet the game is really good and you can feel a lot of efforts behind its development. The game strength lies in the variety of what it offers. There are 4 episodes each with their distinct identity and each offers new scenery, musics, enemies, traps, bosses... Other than the classic platform formula, jump&fight while evading traps, the game often proposes nice sequences, such as escaping a rolling boulder, pursuing a caravan, mounting bees, switching between background and forefront, rooms maze, deadly elevators, controlling a secondary character (Barbarella) or fighting with her,... And it seems there are many inspirations/references: the first is obviously Conan, but also Donkey Kong, Castlevania but I'm too incult to recognize the others. Another noticing point, the game is very challenging. Attacking follow a 3 combos move which the timing may be a bit hard to master at the beginning and while the enemies can also attack, they doesn't need to attack to hurt you, touching you is enough. But the controls are very precise and are responding very well. The game is far to be perfect and sometimes it can offer some sudden spikes of difficulty. But overall the game is never too unfair and proposes a lot of checkpoints, and if you die, you can retry endlessly. (The final boss is maybe an exception, it was too hard for me: I spent hours to finally kill it!) Despite how amazed I was by how the publisher or developers destroyed their sales on steam, I want to recommend this little gem if you can find it at low price during sales :)
Man, I love this game! It's basically one big love letter to the kind of games I grew up playing. One thing though... this game is HARD. And I mean it. I'm pretty good and don't usually scoff at difficulty. I've beaten plenty of games that are generally considered difficult (Cuphead, the Souls games, 100% Super Meat Boy, etc) and the final boss of this game made me doubt whether I could handle it. Seriously. It's that tough. Either way, I love this game and I think you will too. Give it a try!
