It has some good ideas and takes admirable risks. But I found this game to be mostly a chore. You regularly get softlocked after completing a puzzle, just like in the previous game, where the cursor disappears and forces you to quit and restart, sometimes necessitating redoing the puzzle afterwards. Essentially, it has the same problems x 10. There was also a time where upon reloading the game, I just got a black screen and couldn't do anything, making me delete my save and restart. Thankfully, I didn't get a reported problem where the game itself deleted my progress, and the structure of the game at least makes it easy to tell where you are and to get to where you need to go. Take this review as a recommendation only because I would suggest investing in the complete bundle of games, because I genuinely do think the developer did some good work in these games and are worth the low price. But this one in particular feels like they bit off more than they could chew with its overambition, and I don't know what they're doing now, so the games might be abandoned at present. But hey, at least something different has been attempted. In the process though, many puzzles have become far too obtuse, making The Refuge mostly walkthrough fodder, and there are neglected bugs aplenty. And no puzzle game needs a music, melody, or pitch riddle - this sort of thing adds nothing but a pointless obstacle. The one in this game is far too big, whereas the one in, say, The Guest, was relatively small and simple, allowing people like me with no musical talent to just about get by. Something of a misstep then, but not a fatal one hopefully. The trilogy is worth a try, and just maybe will be built upon some day. There's enough positives to reveal a lot of talent put into this.

Acceptable game. I think it earns its mixed review status. It is a novel concept with minigames and puzzles you will not see elseware. I love it for that, and for me it makes it worth playing. But... There are glitches and crashes and freezes frequently. The autosave makes this manageable, but it is still quite frustrating. Some of the puzzles are very hard..... and not always in a good way. You won't always get an indication of what you are supposed to do, if you should have a hint, or if this one is meant to be brute forced. Walkthrough's help, but take a lot of the fun out of it. And finally, the sequel (#4 in the series) has been abandoned, so you will never have a resolution to this story. If you can deal with those things for a decent story and original puzzles, you should do so.
Barely playable with the sheer amount of bugs and softlocks in it. Every time you complete a puzzle you have to pray that the game won't either crash/freeze or softlock you in the puzzle screen. It usually does those two, though, which means you have to restart the game and do the puzzle again. The achievements are barely functional, they only show up after you close the game. Luckily, that'll be happening a lot with the aforementioned bugs. If you pick up an extremely difficult to avoid item at the start before exploring past it, it will completely lock you out of fully completing the game. You have to reset your whole save and play through it again, doing the same buggy puzzles. The dialogue is fine for the most part but some lines just don't make sense at all. I think it's a translation issue. There's also only three settings: Music 100% volume or music off, SFX 100% volume or SFX off, and language. No option to lower the volume, no graphical settings, and the settings reset when you leave the game. (So, pretty much every single time you do a puzzle) It's really just not worth the trouble, even at $0.99.

Bugs make the game unplayable
Reseña de Through Abandoned: The Refuge
