The first thirty minutes of FREAKHUNTER had me hooting and hollering. I was exclaiming things like "oh yeah!!! videogames!!!" to no one in particular. The third-to-last-level, also, had me shouting something to the effect of "oh, man!! i love videogames!!" in an empty apartment. The connective tissue in-between is Fine. FREAKHUNTER's core gameplay - turning, strafing, and blasting weird little dudes - is soooooo good, but if every level was just "shoot the guys and go home", I imagine the game would have worn thin quickly. I, frankly, don't know how I would avoid this if I were making FREAKHUNTER. If you asked me to add more "content" to "extend the gameplay" of Pac-Man, I would probably start crying. FREAKHUNTER approaches the problem by having lots of levels that flip the mechanics on their head to create little puzzle-levels. For example: one early level gives you placeable freak-blocking walls in lieu of ammo, so you have to thoughtfully dodge around enemy pathing instead of putting holes in their freak bodies. This puzzle-level design approach reminds me of many pre-9/11 mid-budget titles, and it's honestly pretty smart! I just didn't vibe with it personally. Most puzzles amounted to thirty seconds of confusion, a moment of "oh!!! okay, I get it", and three-to-five subsequent minutes of going "yep. uh-huh. I got it. mhm." Anyway -- FREAKHUNTER is four dollars. In its best moments, the game is baller and radical and cool. Pick it up, if only to poke around for thirty minutes and say, "huh! neato!!"

it's tough but real freakheads will enjoy it
Buddy, if you're the kinda person who see's a game called FREAKHUNTER for four United States dollars and you don't click buy, you're no friend of mine. But let's say you need additional convincing - imagine a world where Etrian Odyssey had nice, chunky guns instead of RPG combat, and splashed a couple puzzle challenge levels in there.
FREAK STATUS: HUNTED
Wipe them all, slaughter every single one, purge the freakness from their souls.
when i see freaks, i...just wanna shoot 'em! dump 'em in a...filthy ditch!
Freakhunter is rad Neon fear in the dark halls, Violet arms nearer. Trundling corridors, whacking Floating freaks with emerald eyes.
Gets pretty frustrating in the end, but *man* is that gameplay loop intoxicating. Goop Lord if you are reading this I would pay a significant amount extra for an editor to make evil disgusting levels and force people to play them like Jigsaw.
Edit: Played with keyboard and mouse. The music is awesome. The level settings are neat. Gameplay is fun, I like the shooting mechanic. It has a sudo-lightgun feel. I recommend turning on the "visualize mouse aim" option. Difficultly can be unforgiving at parts, especially the end when you're running around in a dark maze trying to figure out where all the switches are under a time limit. I enjoyed the puzzle segments even if they were a little hard. Took me about 3 hours to get to that level (possibly the last level?). I was sick of the game at that point. There's many times where I'd either run out of ammo, get lost and run out of time, or briefly struggle with the controls and get swarmed by freaks. Couldn't bring myself to finish it. There's an input bug(?) where your player will move as many times as you spam the movement buttons, so if you press the forward button 10 times in 2 seconds, the player will move that many times even if you've stopped pressing the button. Not good when you're trying to run away from the freaks and every step counts. Good amateur dungeon crawler, especially for $4. I bought it based on the visuals and attitude of the description, however the game's tone is more serious than the Steam page lets on. I'm looking forward to future projects from this dev.
After long reflection of how much of a chud I am I finally beat it and have to say this game is lowkey goated!
