If you liked this game then try "Flat Heroes"!
stupid rule inconsistencies, bad level design, and lots of waiting make for a game that constantly feels bad to play
Very fun and challenging.
It is a little too very perfect
Simple and engaging, with a focus on it's core tenets.
THOTH is an outstanding example of how a minimalist concept can evolve into a deeply engaging arcade experience through exceptional game design. Developed by Carlsen Games and published by Double Fine Presents, this twin-stick shooter strips away unnecessary mechanics and focuses entirely on precision, skill, and intelligent level design. Instead of relying on cinematic storytelling or extensive progression systems, the game challenges players through carefully crafted arenas where every movement, shot, and decision matters. Its straightforward premise quickly reveals surprising complexity, making it a rewarding experience for players who enjoy mastering demanding gameplay. The core gameplay revolves around navigating compact arenas filled with enemies that each possess unique movement patterns and attack behaviors. Rather than flooding players with endless opponents, THOTH carefully introduces enemy combinations that encourage observation and strategic thinking. Every encounter feels like a carefully designed combat puzzle where understanding enemy behavior is just as important as maintaining quick reflexes. Success comes from learning positioning, predicting threats, and executing precise movements instead of relying on luck or overwhelming firepower. This thoughtful approach keeps every level fresh while steadily increasing the challenge without becoming unfair. One of the game's greatest strengths is its handcrafted stage design. Every arena has its own identity, presenting new tactical situations that constantly encourage adaptation. As players advance, enemy arrangements become increasingly creative, forcing them to rethink familiar strategies while maintaining complete control of their character. Difficulty scales naturally through smarter encounter design rather than artificial obstacles, making each victory feel satisfying because it reflects genuine improvement. Even repeated failures rarely feel frustrating since they usually highlight opportunities to refine timing and decision-making. Visually, THOTH embraces an abstract geometric style that favors clarity over excessive detail. Bright neon colors, simple shapes, and smooth animations combine to create an experience that remains visually clean even during intense firefights. This minimalist presentation serves an important gameplay purpose by ensuring that players can instantly recognize incoming threats and navigate crowded arenas without visual distractions. Despite its simplicity, the aesthetic develops a unique identity that complements the game's fast-paced action and gives every battle an energetic, almost hypnotic rhythm. The soundtrack further elevates the experience with a collection of electronic music that perfectly matches the game's relentless pace. Every encounter is accompanied by energetic compositions that intensify the action without overwhelming it. Sound effects are equally satisfying, providing immediate feedback for movement, enemy destruction, and successful maneuvers. Together, the audio and visual design create an immersive arcade atmosphere that keeps players focused and invested throughout each challenge. Local cooperative play adds another enjoyable layer by allowing two players to work together through the game's demanding stages. Cooperation introduces new tactical possibilities as teammates coordinate movement, divide enemy attention, and support one another during difficult encounters. The multiplayer mode maintains the same level of challenge while rewarding communication and teamwork, making it an excellent option for players looking to share the experience with a friend. THOTH's greatest accomplishment is its unwavering commitment to focused game design. It avoids unnecessary distractions and instead builds its identity around responsive controls, balanced difficulty, and meaningful player improvement. The game trusts players to develop their skills naturally, creating an experience where every completed stage reflects genuine mastery rather than upgraded statistics or unlockable abilities. This philosophy gives the game impressive replay value for those who appreciate refining their performance and chasing flawless runs. While the minimalist approach is one of THOTH's defining strengths, it may also limit its appeal for some audiences. Players seeking a strong narrative, character progression, or a large variety of gameplay systems may find the experience somewhat limited. Likewise, the demanding difficulty can present a steep learning curve for newcomers to the twin-stick shooter genre. However, these qualities are intentional aspects of its design rather than shortcomings, reinforcing its identity as a game built around mechanical excellence and player skill. THOTH succeeds as a polished and highly focused arcade shooter that delivers remarkable depth through elegant simplicity. Its expertly designed levels, satisfying combat mechanics, stylish presentation, memorable soundtrack, and rewarding cooperative mode combine to create an experience that remains engaging from beginning to end. It stands as an impressive demonstration of how thoughtful design can transform a straightforward concept into something genuinely memorable. Players who enjoy challenging arcade games that reward practice, precision, and strategic thinking will find THOTH to be a thoroughly satisfying experience that continues to reward repeated play. Rating: 8/10
