Those Who Rule is A Game that wear its Fire Emblem Inspiration on its sleeve. But please give it a chance to let it whoa you with its Art Style, Character Design, Story-Dialogue Writing and The beautiful Hexagon Grid-Map and you will know that Those Who Rule Can Stand on it own 2 feet as its own game regardless of its Fire Emblem inspiration. Further More The Story this game told and the choices it gives to the players to affect the story make it stand out completely from the regular Fire Emblem Game's Story. Funny thing to say considering the fact that I learn of this game by frequenting the Fire Emblem Universe RomHack Forum looking for Other GBA Fire Emblem Rom Hack with good storytelling to play. Which gave me the chance to join the developer's personal Discord and to get know the developer of the game on a personal level. And let me tell you Eldin The Developer of this game is a Joy to talk to, he even Encourages buying his game at it maximum Discount of 50% Which I promptly did ha ha. So Please take the advice of the game own developer and buy this game for cheap on a 50% Discount I promise you The Quality of this game will make you feel that every pennies you spent on it was totally worth it. I just finished this epic turn-based strategic combat game last night and I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on it while my memory is still fresh. I love games of this genre, and my favourites include XCom2, Jagged Alliance 3, Wartales, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Battle Brothers, etc. Likes: - The storytelling was epic. Totally engaging, with twists and turns and some tough decision making. - The combat system was well thought out, feels polished and I experienced no bugs during my entire run. - The classes are varied, and the 2 tier promotion gives room to more strategic possibilities. - The flow from one battle scene to another feels engaging and natural. - The battle chests and enemy units to drop loot is always good to have. - Needing to fulfill certain requirements to hire special units is definitely fun. I'll need to redo Noah's ;) Suggestions: - No saving options during the battle, when there are large number of units involved, can mean redoing the entire battle when you make even the tiniest mistake. My suggestion, make this an option for like Ironman mode or something where death is permanent and there are no save options during battle. But allow for more casual players to have an alternative game option where they can choose otherwise. - Cut scenes (unlike the dialogue scenes) normally feature just a map with a voice narration. I was hoping to see something different here, maybe some short animated scenes rather than mostly static ones, with the option to replay these cut scenes elsewhere subsequently. - Units not used in the roster normally get left behind after collecting dust since their experience level is way below the mission par, which is a waste. Maybe give a reasonable token experience to all units in the roster that didn't participate in the latest battle every mission, mayne 3/4 of what the participating units get. This will help ensure that unused or less popular units doesn't just become just obsolete. - Units are allowed to reposition after their turn ends. Some directions are not possible if there is no empty space in that direction, due to barriers, etc. I think units should be allowed all directions regardless. An example is an unit on the left facing 2 units on the right, except that this unit on the left cannot face right due to an obstacle there. This means choosing a different facing which allows the right units to have a better chance to backstab that unit on the left, which feels wrong somehow. - Have the market refresh itself with new weapons periodically other than staple ones? This will keep the market useful long after the units attain the uber version of their staple arms and armor. - Having voice actors for the existing dialogues? Regardless of my suggestions, this was an epic game and I have fond memories of the countless battles with my ragtag team of Rangers and I'm definitely looking forward to its sequel. "Rangers Lead the Way!" :)
Ok, as a long fan of Fire Emblem (from the GBA era, being the last 3H becuse I reject Engage with all my soul) someone recommended me this game and I tried it. For those wondering this is a gem to me, I will put below pros and cons but it is a 9/10 because the limited budget and dev team size didn't let it become an 11/10 Here are the "*PROS*" to me on this game 1 - First of all, the art of the game appealed to me, no hyper-realistic bs, good art direction, small size and amazing pricing while working well on Linux (surely on Steam Deck but I mean on Linux, tried it on Mint, Manjaro, OpenSue, all fine). 2 - Second and here is where I started to fall in love with the game, upon starting you are asked not only difficulty but "Perma Death or not? Random Growth Rates on characters or fixed ones?" That made me realize this was a game made with passion for all the gamers who love the genre. 3 - Third... the voice relating... it is really well done, props to the guy, the characters themselve have no voice acting but their drawing fit all the circumstances, and yet those little moments between chapters where the story is told by the narrator give it not only a nice touch but a touching sensation plus the subtitles for people like me which is not native English speaker. Sadly the game is not on other languages but Those Who Rule 2 will be as I understand and I will pull at least 2 friends to play it easily. On the music and soundtrack, it was ok at first but each time I played a mission it would stuck more and more, really nice. 4 - The story, it felt interesting, the ambient and plot from the start, the characters personality, the change on the face when some scenes required it, (I can't stress enough how fast I dropped even RPGs with sprites when they were using the same smiley face over the whole game even when people just died and they were supposed to be angry or sad.) 5 - The Board!! Hexagonal? Getting only bonus damage by the back laterals instead front sides? The "taunt" system with the skill and the "punch" action? I can't remember if I played only one hexagonal cell board in the past and it wasn't half as good as this one, I just felt in love with it. 6 - The weapons system and skills, at the beginning it felt kind of simple but each chapter added more variation and expanded upon a good basic set of options. The crafting and upgrading is good as well! 7 - The Class Promotions! The option between many of them with also their new skills made it so damn cool... nothing really broken that made you think "Oh this is the best class", all of them have their uses and synergies, amazing! 8 - The option to save mid chapter, since I was going with perma death it took me not only many restarts on some chapters but a lot of time overall to finish each mission cautiously, so it was nice to have the possibility to save and quite, to continue later. 9 - The Support Conversations! Most of them were really interesting and well done, explaining many character's personality and goals, relationships between them and such. That made me feel even more immerse on the game and try to keep all of them alive or not use them at all. Also incredibly amazing to be able to decide on some characters if they die, join the party or have other fate by our hands, even for chapter 20 but that moment break my heart. 10 - The dev's support on these forums and other places, which I also realized when finishing the game and reading the "credits", this is not a game to make some bucks, it is a passion project, a game crafted with love to us gamers. Now the "CONS" or stuff that needs to be improved in the next game, and as far as I read on the forums it is being taken in mind with all the feedback. 1 - The Board limits for enemy ranges and such can't be set kept toggle on when you then select your units, not a dealbreaker but something to improve, you can anyway see it before moving your character, it is hard to explain but some people could see it as a problem, for many it won't even matter since you can manage it. 2 - The forge system is super interesting but you will most of the time lack gold to use it if you buy new gear for many characters, and end up just using better weapons dropped or the default ones instead of upgrading others if lacking money. I tend to play with at least 2 full teams from the roster without sharing weapons so I used it a little only, but it is absolutely optional, which is good. The Weapons Mastery on each character only gives them access to certain weapons, but not bonuses on hit or atk, which is not bad but don't rush to level them if you don't need it, so again you can improve with the forge system the accuracy of forged weapons and their atk. 3 - The Class Promotions... graphically they were rough lol, pretty rough hahaha, but since it was just a moment I didn't care enough, however it was hard to show to my friend "Look how cool this class promotion is!" on that screen with those sprites. Understandable tho but I hope it could be improved a little, don't get discourage by it please! 4 - The Support Conversations... and Characters... the good part was really good but then there were some characters showing up out of nowhere in few chapters (not many the)... without proper dialogue. Also some characters that were incredibly important at first kind of disappear from all conversations when they should really be involved near the end. I understand the lack of more Support Conversations being a solo dev with help but there was missing a ton of presence from key characters during the main plot past half game IMHO. And those are the cons to me! Imagine how good it is I was going to buy a Switch 2 for the new Fire Emblem and I just didn't, moved into playing other games and I am just waiting for Those Who Rule 2.

I am thrilled to recommend this game for anyone who enjoys games in the tactics/strategy RPG space. It offers a great story in a genre that often lacks them. The mechanics reward not just one and done but repeat play throughs to experiment with a robust set of interesting and engaging build and squad choices. The highest difficulty offers a rewarding experience that never felt like a slog or RNG fishing expedition. As a fan of the Fire Emblems, FF Tactics, and so on, I truly cannot recommend this game highly enough. Play it!
Great game overall. Loved the game play, decent world, I like the character death system and how it made tactical decisions feel weighty. Writing could be a little simplistic but there are some decent themes explored such as "reform or revolution." Overall a great game.
Still in the middle of this at 6 hours, but having a blast with this indie SRPG / FF Tactics-like (or Fire Emblem)! So far, the difficulty is just right (playing on normal), the characters & story are very intriguing and the dialogue flows really naturally. I played and loved Dark Deity 2 before this, but this is just as much of a great indie SPRG as DD2! Highly recommended!
One of the best tactical RPGs in recent years. Highly recommended!
This is a good one. Lots of fun. Well done in Unity. Great graphics. No hiccups. Only a few hours in but I can tell it's similar to Dark Deity / Fire Emblem / FFTactics in all the right ways. Normal difficulty feels challenging without being oppressive. The casual strategy aspects make your tactical decisions feel impactful without that puzzle-solving feeling of needing to reload due to RNG. It's a few bucks. It's an indie dev. If you make minimum wage then wait for a sale. Everyone else - if you like turn-based tactical strategy games - definitely pick this up.
