When it comes to puzzles, this is more like sudoku or something, no clever thinking. It's mostly maze puzzles with gimmicks. So if you like mass produced puzzles, this is for you. If you are looking for something like myst of guarn, where there is a story and puzzles where you have to think. Then this is not for you
buy this game only when its on sale this ♥♥♥♥ is not worth 55 buckaroonies
i like this for
the thing
. it runs well. it plays somewhat okay. it's alright gameplay. played on epic where it was free once and at other friends' houses. dev seems like an eh person and the random voice notes are just nonsense rambling no matter who you are, wether you're andrew tate or hasan piker or whoever you want to be it's just nonsense rambling.
the thing
is interesting and fun
once you know about it. ●---.
just
the existence of the thing
is why i like this game. other than that being a cool party trick to make weird noises at when other friends play whilst you're watching, it's not really the best as a puzzle game outside of it. sure the puzzles are cool and have a lot of cool mechanics, don't get me wrong, but it's a bit dreary having to walk around constantly trying to get the right perspective for everything. saw someone else say it doesn't respect the time of the player, and i don't agree with the wording but yeah. yeah that sums it up pretty well
An absolute masterpiece of a puzzle game! 9/10. I have such respect for this game's designers! They took a simple concept (drawing a line from a circle to the end of a grid) and teased a staggering amount of complexity and different concepts out of it. The puzzles in this game are truly mind-bending. Sometimes they seem impossible, but the game encourages you to wander off and find different things to try when you get stuck. Oftentimes that allowed my mind to rest and come back better. The environment is breathtaking to look at, and the sounds provide a relaxing immersive backdrop to your time at the island. I will probably spend more time in this game just wandering the island to find more of its mysteries. This game evokes a sense of wonder like no other game, as you discover that this island is packed full of easter eggs, and they're hidden around you everywhere you go. You just have to look! Changing your perspective to find the solution is a main theme of the game, and it's done so well! The Witness rewards careful observation at a slow pace. This game respects your intelligence! Whenever it seems like something is off, there is usually something hidden for you to find. Look deeper! The file size is tiny, the game runs without a hitch. When you leave and come back, it boots up almost instantly and puts you right where you left off. My only gripe with this game is the narrative. I think it's weak. I came into this game trying to determine what cataclysm happened to the inhabitants of this island to turn them to stone, who the characters were, and why I was the only person left alive. From the tapes scattered about and the statues, I thought maybe it was an island full of geniuses who had tried to reach some ultimate understanding of truth, but got cursed for their hubris. But no. There's no cataclysm behind the narrative, the stone people aren't real people from what I can tell. The answer to why you are the only person here is not an interesting one. And hubris doesn't factor in to the story. When I finished the game with the first ending, I felt pissed off and gut-punched, like the game was telling me, "this is all an art project. Enjoy the journey, not the destination." That first ending took all the wind out of my sails. it destroyed most of the driving force for exploring the island in the first place: to piece together what happened. I thought the true ending would wrap things up better, but it didn't. It was vague and underwhelming, and what it was actually implying was not conveyed well. I felt confused and annoyed. I had to do research to learn what the actual narrative behind the game was, and it was... fine. It was better than my initial interpretation, but still nowhere near as exciting as what I thought was happening. My advice for new players is, enjoy the atmosphere of the game, the wonder of finding secrets, and the masterful puzzle design. Relax, take in the sights, and enjoy your time wandering the island. Just don't put too much stock in the narrative and don't expect for a tidy and fulfilling ending.
The art style is great, it's the kind that will be timeless. The world is thoughtfully created and laid out. I do like how the game doesn't really tell you anything. Each new area introduces you slowly into a new concept, and it's up to you to figure out the rules. Now I love puzzle games, but this game is tough. Sometimes creeping into the frustrating rather then fun. Often times I got stuck, had to take a picture of a puzzle on my phone, and try solve it in my own time and come back to it later. The achievements don't lie. With something like only 20% of players finishing the game, and how many of those looked up answers to puzzles? It's a game statistically the majority are going to give up in. However, each area does a pretty good job of being different. I felt some areas did a great job of slowly increasing difficulty as you progress, whilst others simply increased the annoyance per puzzle. Especially areas like the sound area, and the final mountain area. When puzzles start spinning around and moving, they're not harder to do, they're just an absolute headache to look at. A quick note, if you are colourblind or have hearing difficulties, this game is not for you. You literally will not be able to complete some areas; the game offers no work arounds. I found the ending rather anti-climactic and disappointing. Considering the whole game doesn't really give you any sort of reward for solving puzzles other than more and harder ones, I thought there would be a pig pay off at the end that would offer something into this world we've been dropped into. I loved the additional challenge room. By the time I finished the main game, I still felt slow at the puzzles, often times taking huge amounts of time to solve them methodically and slowly. But this is a series of random puzzles against a time limit. It may have taken me probably 50 attempts over the course of a few days. But each day I could see I was getting faster, getting better at intuitively solving the puzzles with speed. Completing that area and seeing the achievement pop felt fantastic. It made me feel like I really grasped the games puzzles, and considering around only 5% of players have done it, I'm super happy I completed it. Overall, it's a good puzzle game, and a big test of patience and perseverance. I didn't enjoy everything, but for the majority of the time it was good. This definitely isn't a game for everyone, buy I'd recommend to the more hardcore puzzle enjoyers.
The reveal at the ending was awe inspiring.
