The Window Box is a slightly overpriced, very short, very good visual novel. It's characters are charming, the art gorgeous, and the story interesting. The puzzles are mediocre, and not very fun. The story itself, without spoiling much, is of 5 friends reunited in Elsa's house, when their lives are at a crossroads. Their stories intertwine into your experience. It's good. If you relate to their issues, it'll probably be better than if you don't. Worth it on sale.
This is a mediocre hybrid of interactive novel and point and click adventure game, heavy on the novel part and light on the actual gameplay. The game features a kitcshy art style. While the implementation here is middling, the real problem is that it's not much of a video game. Casual gamers looking for point + click adventures would do better with an Artifex Mundi style HOG, and you can get those free on mobile. Who does that leave? People looking for a story? There's thousands of free books on Project Gutenberg, or in the libraries around the world. But these guys want $18.50 (ouch) for something that would never be published in print, because it's just not up to scratch for that (why do you think they paid their $100 to get this on Steam?). It's no surprise this is being shovelled into bundles. $18.50!
I haven't read a VN quite like this one. It reminded me of The Yellow Wallpaper and The Stepford Wives in places. The art and music worked well with the whimsical tone, and the structure reminded me of a play.
I received this game as part of a bundle a few years back and finally decided to try it, so I went into this really not knowing anything about it. This game is a narrative, beautifully artistic exploration of real-life and sometimes dark topics. You will feel all the feelings.
This VN starts all cute and whimsy, but it left me deeply unsettled. The content warnings do not lie, so consider those before buying. Beautiful to look at. Nice background music. 5 women getting trapped in a mansion. But it'll pass, right? The storm will pass, that is what storms do... There are parts of this where I, as the player, don't understand what is happening and why. When I say "whimsy" I also mean odd and sometimes unexplained. Somehow it fit, the artpiece that is this visual novel really resonated for me. If you like the vibes of it right away, then it will with you too. It is whimsy, but still serious, and it didn't let me forget that. To me the story felt like a little journey. I will be thinking about it for a while, and I really enjoyed the writing.
Nice game. Good story, hard topics, good points of view and pretty enjoyable. I wish it was longer, but it's fine. I really like the aesthetic too.
Slow start, but surprinsingly good game and story. Finished in about 2 hours, a good pick if you can find it for a few bucks (or in a bundle like I did). Careful about the sound thought, it's very loud or very quiet at times
Really good game. Covers a lot of heavy topics and has a captivating story line.
emotional and thought provoking
Excellent Visual Novel with interesting puzzles. The story was really engaging and I found myself wanting to continue through to find out what happened next. The art style is very beautiful and is shown throughout the game including in the puzzles and cut scenes.
