A game that a year ago would not have felt like something that could happen in the United States. Now, having played it in the United States in January 2026, it's something I would like to recommend to people who are on the fence about what they think of the current state of news media in the US. If you play as an editor willing to tow the government's line, if you buck against the censorship and oppression, or if you go all out to make the employees look different than their political sensibilities are laid out, you'll see the sorts of things that are starting to happen here. This game was free, I'm not sure if I bought it when it cost money or not, but I hope I did, so the developers got something form me for it. I enjoyed the experience.
Dystopic game about media in a dictatorship.
What does a game built on dystopia, political simulation and choice‑driven design feel like? Purposeful. Consequential. Cautious. Oppressive. Pessimistic. A constant dance between taking risks and missing opportunities, hoping for the best while bracing for the worst — even when you choose to resist authoritarian violence and injustice. The Westport Independent thrives on tension. You manage a newspaper caught between loyalist workers who support the regime regardless of its abuses and rebellious employees who fight for democratic values, civil liberties and dignity. Each group has its own will: they may accept or refuse assignments, comply or resist your authority as their boss. Meanwhile, your readership — divided between loyalists and liberals — reacts differently to every editorial choice. Sales rise or collapse depending on your political stance, the stories you publish, the tone your editors take, how much you appease the regime, how boldly you defy it and how the government and rebels respond to your paper’s influence. The gameplay experience is defined by a persistent tension between strategic decision‑making and the unpredictable consequences produced by an oppressive political environment. The consequences are often bleak and echoing real history. A liberal employee may be arrested. A loyalist worker may refuse to work if you lean toward democracy. Protests erupt, strikes spread and revolutions ignite. Sometimes the dictator crushes dissent and turns society into a suffocating cage of censorship and fear. Sometimes democratic leaders are killed. Sometimes the revolution succeeds and the regime falls. Sometimes your business is shut down and your liberal staff simply disappear. Luck is never on your side because the authorities always move first. You must constantly monitor loyalty and suspicion because the police can raid your office, the government can shut you down or your customers can abandon you. Some outcomes can be anticipated but many cannot be controlled — the political machinery is too powerful and too unpredictable. You must play carefully, strategically and with a willingness to accept painful trade‑offs. The Westport Independent has flaws. Several mechanics are poorly explained. On your first playthrough, you will likely have no idea how suspicion meters work and arrests may feel sudden and unfair. The visual presentation is also dated — the text display resembles an old DOS window, which may not appeal to everyone. Yet the parallels to our contemporary world are unmistakable. Nevertheless, the game’s thematic resonance with contemporary global politics is striking. Freedom fighters still struggle for liberty, democracy and basic survival of their families or themselves. Resistance movements take years, sometimes generations, to succeed. Victories are bittersweet; failures are devastating. Think of Africa, the Middle East, Thailand, Afghanistan or Hong Kong — places where the cost of dissent is painfully real. Despite its imperfection, I recommend this game for its intelligent design and the richness of its branching outcomes. It forces you to confront uncomfortable truths about power, fear and the fragile nature of freedom and democracy.
