Superstorm Melon Date

This was an enjoyable visual novel with a unique premise set in a dystopian future filled with hybridized Melon People. As the title suggests, the player has the opportunity to befriend and date a particularly charming Melon person whom they meet on some all-too-relatable dating site. Things I enjoyed about this game: -You can't beat the price tag. This game provides approx. 1 hour of free entertainment per play through. -Although the game is brief, it has replay value, with different endings dependent on your in-game behavior and dialogue. The player's choices hold real in-game consequences, although the game suggests that none of the endings are negative. -The game provides a reasonable amount of history to assist you in navigating the setting as the protagonist, but does not overwhelm the player with irrelevant detail. -The dialogue writing is strong, with witty, tender, and vulnerable interactions eliciting empathy and organic connection. -The player is not forced into romantic or (non-explicit) sexual interactions with the central character (although these are available, if desired). Friendship is a possibility for those who would rather take a platonic approach.

⭐⭐⭐ A funny, cute and heartwarming short story. AI generated voice acting could have made it more entertaining, though.

Despite taking place in a dystopian world where thunderstorm occurs occasionally and violently to the point people need to take shelter in their bunkers for weeks to avoid the crossfire. Despite over half of the human-populating people mutating into melon people from an experiment to sort food shortest. Despite people spending probably most of their time in their bunkers away from civilisation, isolated to form many meaningful relationships. Despite all of that love always finds a way through. This is what this wholeheartedly too-good-to-be-true wholesome romance novel is all about. Love always finds a way to exist. Even if it is with quirky flirtation, lighthearted sexual tension and cheeky banters. This game does a good job of making the couple compatible with each other even if it can feel too good to be true. Even so, it is always nice to experience love on a first date romance story without too much drama diminishing the tension. Just, let people be happy in peace plz, we don't have any forced drama all the time. Not this time around.

I was not expecting much from this VN but I was quite pleasantly surprised. The visuals are... unique, but the writing and the story doesn't miss a beat. There are 5 different endings which are tied to how often you're friendly to Mel versus how flirty you are with them throughout. My only negative thoughts are of a technical nature: there is no skipping functionality to easily (and not accidentally miss new text) skip through text and you can't view text history by using mouse wheel up. These are standard Ren'Py functions, so it's rather odd they're missing.

This is the second visual novel I've ever played and only did so because I'm deeply obsessed with the creator's work (in an appropriate and respectful manner ofc) but I'm pretty sure this is the best one out there. The conversation feels really natural which really makes or breaks any story for me. Also? Greatest nonbinary representation in gaming history.
