THE WELL IS NOT EMPTY

I was introduced to TWINE like many others thanks to the demo's coverage on youtube, and was left initially impressed by the gimmick of the monsters. The game's monsters are certainly what you will play it for, they are fun and aside from a glitch with one grabbing you from under tables (Perhaps not a glitch, but I was also grabbed through a wall), I'd say they all felt unique to play against and I never found them unfair. The aesthetic of the game feels individualistic and to praise the monsters again, good. it isn't just another PSX/PS1 style game you've played. I found it striking in places and never anything less than serviceable to the experience. The game is short, noticeably short, but it isn't short enough to make the pricetag feel too much. There's naturally a lot I haven't done in my single playthrough, and for the game's length, it's definitely one you can replay every one in a while. The story is a means to push you forward, as I said, you will play this game for the gameplay and not for an overly captivating story. The ending was fairly predictable from the beginning but there was never anything that would influence my thoughts on the game negatively. In a sea of indie games that want you to obsess over an unnecessarily convoluted plot, I appreciate this game for realising you are here to play a game and not repeat your fnaf theory phase. Given the game is meant to be a horror, I will say I never felt much dread or terror, I was startled once and I felt tense in the chase sequences, but I was never paralysed from walking onwards. For a sequel, I'd recommend the developer lean into maintaining that tension more, the lights section of the game did a fantastic job of it and I wish it held as strong for the rest of the game. Overall: A fun horror game, worth putting time into and I would be very interested in seeing what the developer does next. In a genre of games swarmed by locker hiders, make sure you play one that's willing to step beyond that.
