The Valley Beyond is a game that I am recommending with some caveats. It is exactly what it claims to be: an exploratory adventure without instructions or a map. Just a huge valley to wander in hopes of stumbling upon something interesting. The environment is diverse, with hills, valleys, and shorelines. The points of interest include artwork, odd shapes, large black structures, and small buildings. There is some narration, with subtitles, and a background of ambient noise and soft music. For me, the soundtrack did not add to the game experience. So, after an hour or so, I removed my headphones and played in silence. The puzzles are quite obtuse. In some cases, you are presented with a poetic phrase that provides a hint as to an action that is required near your current location. Other times, you need to find missing components, view objects from a specific point of reference, rotate them to a particular angle, or simply traverse them. Solutions are reached by trial and error, rather than by logic or discoverable clues. Instead of being inspired by the challenge, I became increasingly frustrated. My biggest annoyance is with the mechanics of moving around. Your character has limited abilities to traverse slopes, and it is never clear when you will slide (or fall) to your death. I know not to jump off a cliff without a parachute, but trying to scale a not-so-steep slope should not be fatal. Limiting walking to areas with grass helps but is not always a full solution. I slid/fell and died countless times which resulted in frequent respawning. I think this might have been handled a bit more smoothly… perhaps with a warning or a visual cue. My second complaint relates to energy consumption. You must watch your energy level (an indicator on your back) and recharge regularly with green crystals. In many areas, these crystals are plentiful. However, in other areas they are quite sparse. I was trying to figure out a puzzle and continued dying because there was not enough energy in the area to experiment and get back to a crystal. It may be that the respawn option on the in-game menu was added with this scenario in mind. The game autosaves on exit, to a single slot. Achievements are related to discovering and/or activating objects of interest and completing the game. There are additional items in the environment that are not specifically tied to an achievement. To track all collectibles, there is a "progress" option on the in-game menu which gives you counts of items found. There is a camera option on the in-game menu which allows you to photograph the valley using a host of visual effects. This is a cool feature but does not appear to be tied to core gameplay. I admit that The Valley Beyond did not grab my attention and hold it. It feels too open-ended and I lack the patience to do a grid search of the valley to discover all that is hidden. I am aware that I am giving up, having barely scratched the surface of this game. Thus, it is not fair for me to judge it harshly. If you enjoy the kind of walking simulator that drops you into an lonely world and leaves you to your own devices, then this game may be perfect for you! Full Review: https://youtu.be/SXVz2OOsO5A TL;DW It needs a lot of polish (which I've been told is coming) but it has a strong core concept of exploration, and I hope it does get the improvements it needs, so of now, on steam deck however it's too rough to recommend.
The world is a pleasure to wander in. Puzzles are fairly easy, at least at the start. Some slippery slopes sometimes annoying, you need to be careful where you step. All in all a quiet and satisfying experience.
Read the full review with accompanying screenshots here: https://playcritically.com/2026/01/09/the-valley-beyond-review/ When I first open The Valley Beyond, an animated wave form representing the voice guide invites me to explore the Valley, “the ultimate land of art and adventure.” The reality of my experience falls far short of this pitch. I adore the broad idea. A puzzle videogame where I solve geometric riddles using perspective tricks and simple platforming that gives way to a broader, open-ended exploration videogame tinged with existential horror is appealing to me. This appealing idea is marred by poor performance and optimization, tedium in traveling from place to place, and a world that frequently breaks in either visual or interactive ways. My final moments with The Valley Beyond summarize my entire experience. While trying to use a fast travel point to return to the desert and find the last optional collectible to earn the final achievement, my avatar gets stuck on something and falls into the infinite void beneath the world. Somehow, my game autosaves at this moment. Every time I reload, I am stuck watching my avatar fall endlessly to its doom, respawning moments later only to fall again. The Valley Beyond needs far more polish for its genuinely good ideas to shine.
If you like introspective and explorative experiences (think Condo or the quieter moments of Abzû), this game nails that meditative vibe. Exploration is completely open from the start, and the environmental puzzles range from simple to surprisingly involved. Just know that many of them test patience more than skill... long climbs, long waits, long silences. The visuals are genuinely stunning and scale impressively well, but the audio is extremely sparse. Whether that feels calming or empty will depend entirely on your tolerance for minimalism. Full in-depth review here: https://gamewhims.com/2025/11/20/the-valley-beyond-review/
A really poetic game. I really like the fact that it doesn't take you by the hand. You have to figure things out by yourself. I have played a few hours and it's really cool to discover new areas. I really want to visit all the "sculpture". A cool little game for people who like puzzle+exploration. The art direction is simple, perf are good. can't wait to play more tomorrow !
This game really surprised me. Its open-ended structure feels fresh - you explore at your own pace, go wherever you want, and constantly discover something new. It’s not just a chill walking sim either: the need to manage energy and pay attention to the terrain keeps you engaged, while the timed beacons are a genuinely clever mechanic I’ve never seen before. Some puzzles really stood out, felt unique, atmospheric, and closer to classic adventure design. I do wish there was a bit more variety overall, since platforming and “point-of-view” puzzles are used a lot and don’t always show the game’s strengths. The pacing worked great for me. Valley feels inviting yet lonely at first, and as you progress, that loneliness becomes heavier and more meaningful. The late-game shift, when answers start appearing and new questions emerge, is excellent, and the final reveal reminded me of the kind of emotional punch you get from games like INSIDE. The game still needs more polish, but has a strong indie spirit and a set of ideas that feel genuinely original. It’s the kind of game that sticks with you after you finish it.
No Responsibility Review,
This game is great for adventurers, and the photo mode is impressively polished.
