Not a lot happens in this game and you can't get hurt or die, but it looks great, and that's good enough for me. There are some environmental type puzzles, although they're not all that challenging - but this game isn't trying to be that in any way. UnderGarden is more about relaxation, exploration, and having something nice to look at on the screen. UnderGarden hasn't crossed that line where it's more "art" than game; it is definitely still a game, but just don't expect tricky platforming or any enemies. I'm not even sure if you could call it platforming - you just float around making cool glowing stuff grow and weird dudes play music while nobody attacks you and even explosions don't hurt, and eventually you find your way to a portal and then go some place else and do more of the same and maybe you put on a hat. I like this game; 6 out of 10, would propagate.
Do not buy this game! it's broken and there is NO actual fix for it!
Hello everyone, this is not an actual review as i can't even get the game to work, i just left the error msg up for 5 mins so i can write this and warn you before you waste your money on it. This game looks so beautiful and fun but sadly it's no longer supported, it just crashes at the start, there is no actual fix for it till the date of writing this, I've seen some people talking about a possible way to run the game but it doesn't work for everyone (there is a 20% chance to work) "it's by changing your PC region" ( read more about this here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/9980/discussions/0/558750544094241991/ ), but for me it doesn't worth all that time and efforts, specially knowing that 80% it won't work .. What a shame, for now just stay away from this game! i'm sure it won't be fixed any soon.
The UnderGarden is a slow casual experience with beautiful visuals and relaxing music. Good for that slow lazy evening yet offers a bit of a challenge if going for gold. Think Creavures, Aquaria, even Sparkle 2 Evo - a slower-paced adventure with a heavy focus on mesmerising visuals and a soothing soundtrack. The aim of the game is to pollenize the underwater flora and explore the levels for secrets. There's no need to rush so it's perfectly fine to just relax and take time solving the odd puzzle. For those more interested in score it's certainly possible to go for speed as each level is scored and time is recorded. Something to appeal to both casual and core gamers. The puzzle design is not ground-breaking but does what it has to do without compromising the relaxing nature of the game too much. There are lever puzzles, push-buttons that have to be held down (or up!) by special seeds, and some other physics-based puzzles. Some puzzles have alternative, less obvious solutions that lead to secrets and bonus collectibles so it's certainly worth the while to experiment a little and try to explore every nook and cranny. I suppose I would recommend the game to anyone looking for a decent time without the fast pace of more modern games. It's not often that I play casual games like this, but the visuals and an overall calm atmosphere are hard to pass up.
Nice art style but gameplay is very slow. You fly around with your dude seeding some pollen so flora can bloom. Each seeds have different properties and you use them to solve puzzles. Not a bad game just very tedious to play. Idea is somewhat fresh and original. Soundtrack is ok. Game was published by Atari so quality is there.
Zen gaming at it's best. Colorful, simple, and above all relaxing...except when you can't find the last flora in a level. That is infuriating. Still well worth the price.
The UnderGarden is a calming albeit somewhat boring experience that is for those looking to relax and not have to worry about frustrating puzzles or killing everything that moves.
This was a fun game when I was able to play it. I have no idea what changed but it now crashes on startup. Was very hopeful that I could play this on the TV with Steam Link and Controller but a crashing game isn't a playable game. Many people have reported this issue but there is no fix and no patch will be released due to developer problems and politics. Should not be available for sale while it is broken. Can not recommend. http://steamcommunity.com/app/9980/discussions/0/558750544094241991/?ctp=3 edit: I have been getting mixed success after setting compatibility options on the executable itself. Still sadly not recommended until this is (ever) patched.

While expecting yet another unimaginative retro 2D platformer, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that, while the game is a 2D scroller, the developers differentiated the game sufficiently for me to not despise it. 3D graphics present the 2D plane in an acceptable way for PC gamers to tolerate, console control schemes aren't forced on you, so the game technology is tolerable. Gameplay is more esoteric than regular platforming, geared towards puzzle solving rather than timing jumps and dodging turtles. Mechanics involve moving and triggering various plants and "entities" in the 2D environment, with gravity triggers and so on. It's probably aimed more at children, it's certainly not heavy on action, etc etc, but that's fine - if you like 2D esoteric platformers, and have young children, this is quite an acceptable choice.
A cute, relaxing, but ultimately boring game. You just float around solving simple physics puzzles i.e. holding "grab" to collect various fruit, some of which might float to the top of the screen or others which drift to the bottom of the level to push a lever to open the way for you, or knocking a larger piece of fruit downward to press a see-saw type shape to let you progress underneath. The game's sounds and visuals are well-made for what they are, and seeing the flowers bloom / begin to glow as you fly near them while carrying other creatures who are playing various music instruments (a guitar, drums, etc..) is a cool, chill effect, however the game doesn't do much to surprise you from these initial gameplay loops and characters, and begins to get mundane quickly. If you're dying for a relaxing game with cutesy characters in a mostly pointless venture maybe give it a go but I think most people will find they grow bored of what this game offers relatively quickly, even if you find the overall characters and design enjoyable.
