Slay the Arch-Enemy of Group Projects! Exhilarating Musou Action to Crush Injustice with Your Fists
The greatest horror in university life is the presence of the "free rider"—those who ignore assignments and only take the credit. This title is a 3D hack-and-slash with an extremely unique concept that transforms such real-world stress directly into destructive catharsis. To catch a chaebol heiress who abandoned her group project and fled, players must push through downtown streets, mowing down mobs she has bribed. The gameplay is simple and exhilarating Musou-style action. The five different playable characters each have distinct styles, such as martial arts or swordsmanship, and specialize in the thrill of clearing the screen of enemies with flashy "Rage Arts." As mentioned in the curator review, the surreal development where "cute" heroines knock down former classmates—who stand in their way for worldly reasons—gives the game a unique momentum similar to a B-movie (in a good way). While the controls are light and combos connect easily, there is some roughness typical of indie games. Several technical areas for improvement are visible, such as the camera work during chaotic battles and bugs where hit detection fails when using certain skills. Furthermore, the current volume is modest, and it may feel a bit lacking for those expecting deep progression elements or a long-form adventure epic. However, few other games allow you to so directly vent your anger at someone who claims they were "too busy to reply" while playing around on social media. As a stress-relief tool (!) that can be played in short bursts, or as a casual 3D action game to enjoy cute character modeling, this is a title that will definitely resonate with its target audience.
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
Hack and slash games tend to be favorites of mine, so when I realized it had only been out for around a month, I hoped to get a review key for it. The developers were kind enough to respond, but it wound up being a disappointing experience. It has the bare-bones structure in place, yet without any of the quality or features that make hack and slash games so fun for me.
Gameplay
Games like this can be repetitive, but this title does nothing to mix things up or present interesting fights. I suppose one could argue watching students shoot you is somewhat entertaining, but that level of violence is completely disproportionate to the plot. Plus, it defies any logic about this game taking place in Japan, where regular people won't have firearms. The only set-up in this game is defeating 20-40 peons, and then take on a boss, with no additional objectives or mechanics. Each defeated enemy leaves behind either health or money, and you can buy a stat boost in-between every mission. There's no other NPCs to interact with, anything to unlock or develop your character's fighting abilities, and everything that happens takes place within a couple of city blocks. It makes for a really sad experience when you're basically stationary, with each repetitive fight happening in the exact same place. If it weren't for the unskippable cutscenes, I'm sure that any character's campaign could be finished in around 20 minutes or so. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3689544381
Controls
With only a few combos at your disposal, fighting enemies gets stale very quickly. To some extent, you can corral enemies, but it's not a satisfying experience. At least the controls while playing the game felt fine, but trying to speed through the dialogue didn't seem to work that well.
Story
Unless you get a stellar team together for a group project, nobody likes trying to get along with other students they probably don't know, let alone when at least one person will likely shirk their share of the work. Although it's a relatable matter, it's an odd basis for this style of game, and doesn't make that much sense story-wise. It tiptoes into over the top territory, but when each person's campaign can be finished in 30-40 minutes, it makes the antics more perplexing. I had to beat up everybody a couple of times, including around 100 strangers, and then everything is resolved. After reading the only character's ending that I reached, I couldn't help but question what the developers were thinking, wrapping up a stupid story with such an unsatisfying summary. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3689545255
Visuals
Aside from the gameplay, the colorful visuals and anime style is what caught my eye. However, it's not really worth much when it's constrained to such a small area. You'd think Tokyo takes up less space than a lousy park. Keeping in mind the space limitations, there's only so many unique models, most of which are comprised of extras in the background. There inclusion isn't a bad thing, yet it doesn't make up for an otherwise empty space that you can't interact with. The NPCs that wander around in the background must have toggles for the mood they're in, as some will stomp around, while others are skipping. Ironically, the animations and movement don't look too bad, but they don't even necessarily interact with the ground properly, as you'll see them dip into the floor, or hover above it.
Sound Design
Considering the limited content, FFR doesn't suffer from not having enough songs, as it changes depending on whether you're progressing through the story, or actively fighting. The songs seemed a little generic, but I can't say there was really anything wrong with the tunes. I only noticed about three distinct songs, yet without other environments serving as a good reason to change the mood, this doesn't seem out of place. Perhaps because of the anime style, I did expect there to be voice-acting, but having none is better than horrible takes from bad actors. This was probably the one element I don't have any significant problems to discuss. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3689544686
Pros
🌟 Each playable character has their own perspective on the story. 🌟 You can easily 100% all the achievements.
Cons
❌ The game never crashed or behaved too erratically, but it's still a buggy mess. After saving and quitting, I lost progress made from beating a mission, and you can fight during unskippable cutscenes. Also, the dialogue has a tendency of transitioning away too early. ❌ Despite the characters speaking with each other throughout the game, I never found out anything about any of them. There's not nearly enough content to get any sense of what anybody is like. ❌ There's a minuscule amount of attacks you can use, and enemies constantly bombard you with attacks. That's why they spawn so many healing items.
Tips
🔍 You can change the difficulty to Very Easy to reduce how much damage you take, although I'm not positive it actually worked. 🔍 If you start getting hit, spam the dodge move to run away.
Final Thoughts
I've never made a game myself, but from wrestling with various programs, I can empathize with how frustrating it could be to get simple things to work properly. Even when you can get it to work, a small deviation can be enough to throw everything into disarray. With how this game is presented, that's somewhat of the impression I get, where the developers had lofty goals, but not the foundation in place to get anywhere close to what they had in mind. That's no excuse for a hack and slash game with such little gameplay value, while also having so many errors and bugs in it. What's especially upsetting about FFR is that even the small things aren't done well. For example, merely selecting which character you want to play as to start the game feels clunky. This is one of the worst products I've encountered in a while, so I'd suggest everyone avoid it entirely.

Petite Anime Musou, It's Fun!
