The Soul Stone War

It feels a bit short next to some of the IFs I have read but don't let that fool you. It's fun, and it really hits hard. Especially if you pick the Shadow's End origin. The language can sometimes seem a bit out of place for the setting, unless you're like me and enjoy stuff like Vox Machina and then it will vibe very well with you.

It's not the worst out of all I've read, yet not the best. It's all right. The MC comes off a bit juvenile at times, despite the possibility to choose a more mature age bracket for them, so I always stick with "barely an adult" option for my playthroughs. The first book feels pretty short, and the main appeal is a promise of further development of the characters, their relationships and the lore in sequels. The third book is about to release as I write the review, the author's writing speed is pretty good, so the probability of us getting the complete series eventually is high enough.

This is a really, really great story

I've enjoyed this story, all flaws included. Since I passed all skill checks presented I didn't feel the MC to be as useless as some reviewers have made them out to be. Plus in my opinion, the MC is not supposed to be this super cool person with protagonist powers and plot armour. They're just some guy from some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ village that found themselves in the plot, which is not unheard of for this type of fantasy. And, having read the next book, they do change and grow in power. I also don't mind playing characters that have a more set personality, since I don't self insert, so for me the MC was not a big issue. They felt young and a bit out of their depth, and sometimes they acted a bit out of character when compared to my stats, but nithing I found particularly egregious. I played a stoic/pragmatic/bold character and I didn't see that too challenged by the narrative. Again, this particular issue also gets ironed out in the next book, as the author as a firmer grasp on the character. I liked the characters we could interact with. They were fun and interesting. Eledwen is lovely (best girl), Dae is a lovable raskal, Straasa is the big brother you adore and Morkai is the big brother you wanna punch. Manny is the kind of guy I want to punt into the ground and them marry after. He's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but a consistent one. There's more to him than meets the eye, if you're willing to endure his presence. His route in the next books is incredibly interesting. Props to the author for allowing us to date the BBEG. This is clearly the work of a novice, someone who has not yet found their rythym and prose, so the writting is uhm...not good. A bit awkward, a bit silted, too many exclamation points imo. However, the author grows by the end of this book. The ending's writting (at least the one I got), was noticebly way better writen than the start. The next book is also much better in that regard. All in all, I really liked this story. It may not be for everyone, but it tickled my fancy.

Trust, respect, love and unbreakable bonds all these things should be earned. You start off on the run as a weak, pathetic but oh so pretty thing and everyone comes to your rescue constantly and opens up to you immediately and loves you immediately because you so pretty. That’s generally how the story goes. You pass out a few times, stumble around, flirt (I love it tho) and everyone just bends over backwards for you because you are precious, delicate af, probably too stupid to walk and generally suck at doing things without almost dying. I do not mind a weak but grows stronger arc. I love witnessing the journey of a nobody to a somebody but you constantly feel like a joke. It’s annoying. Everyone just goes [i]“Aw cute you stoopid but I’m so into it”[/i] I kept wondering and characters even voice this at times why everyone is fawning over you. Why do they even care about you? What reason have you given then beyond your appearance? They just have to help you, put their lives on the line for you. I never felt as though I genuinely earned any of that. I hate. [b]HATE HATE HATE[/b] characters just throwing up love all over you when you just met. You barely know anything about each other but they want to spend an eternity with you because... reasons? Morkai/Dae want to play with you but they love you lots deep down because... reasons? I did enjoy the writing overall. The “Maker’s breath” (I think of Cullen every time *loving sigh*) and tongue in cheek moments injected all over the place felt a bit immature but I didn’t want to strangle myself so that’s always a plus. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. I decided my [i]“I must do naughty things to you”[/i] partner of choice was Morkai because I love annoying frustrating people and it was fun. I plan on expanding but I will admit I find myself struggling to stay interested. I just skim over all of the annoying my character sucks at existing parts – which is a lot. Try it on a sale. Take advantage of the demo. I [i]do[/i] recommend this but only if you don’t mind being pretty and useless.

It reads like something you'd find on fanfiction.net, which if that's something that wouldn't bother you then go ahead and knock yourself out. 4/10 for me.

playing consistent with the character apparently leads to the.... bad ending which essentially amounts to killing you off without warning or ceremony what the romance system is also just f ucking obnoxious all in all severly dissapointed

Interesting stories and characters, I like it.But honestly, it's not like a real COG, and it's really a little too short.
