The Secret of Varonis

Fun throwback to FFL2 / SaGa 2 on the Gameboy. If you're already familiar with that game you know about 90% of what to expect here.

Never played SaGa games, so I didn't have any previous experience with this style of JRPGs. Progression and balance are excellent, it was very interesting to juggle different characters and figuring out the whole team composition. I do generally enjoy grinding in JRPGs to be overprepared and it was a blast here. note: the games gets a little on the easier side towards the end. Story is pretty minimalistic, but writing is surprisingly entertaining. I liked the characters, some worlds had interesting gimmicks, the main plot is engaging. I mostly play JRPGs for the plot and I don't have anything bad to say in this case. Neat. The only frustrating part for me was that one overly complicated dungeon in the middle of the game, where I spent a little too much time flipping switches and going back and forth not knowing what to do. Not sure if it was me only problem, but it's the only annoying part I found. Very good game, highly recommend.

I cried at the ending.

Surprisingly long, interesting mechanics, good story. Still not done. Thumbs up. The difficulty options are really nice -- "fixed" battles is the hardest option, where there are only a fixed number of encounters in the game, so you have to be very, very thoughtful about where you're spending your resources. In a Final Fantasy Legend type system where there's no XP, it makes it a totally (I think??) unique experience.

Exactly the game I was looking for. I had Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2, and 3 growing up, but with little explanation of the mechanics, I never made much progress in them. I've revisited them through the years, but having a game that has all the mechanics explained in game makes playing the game so much easier, than constantly referring to a guide on another screen to make sure what you doing is going to accomplish what you're trying to do. Building your party around equipment and abilities rather than traditional leveling up is a fascinating process. If you're an old fart like me that loves old school mechanics, this is a well built game that will absolutely scratch that itch.

Very fun old school RPG. Based on the early Saga or FF legends game. Even though it seems basic there is quite a bit of room for expression in your builds which I very much appreciate. Story is definitely basic, but doesn't over stay it's welcome which is appreciated. Enemy visual variety is lower than I'd like, but at this price it hard to complain. My only real nit pick is I think balance between the races isn't perfect. Espers felt very strong needing low investment in funds (I used the 1100g wands almost the entire game to amazing results.) Less slots for gear getting abilities from fighting as well so they have low cost and where the first to hit max stat before human even had a chance to buy their way there. Humans are solid I loved having one but they feel more balanced due to the cost involved in buying stat ups and more expensive gear. Had some points they were strong or weak depending when/what I could buy. Robot felt a bit lack luster. Sure they can be built a variety of ways, but they just felt like they cost a lot but never hit the same level. Monsters are more for fun I think and the preset is hit and miss with them. Over all a wonderful time filled with nostalgia and a surprisingly fun little bit of JRPG turn based combat.

This is FFL1+2 / SaGa 1+2 with QoL. Must play for any SaGa fan.
