The Sapling is a short simulation game where you design your own plants and animals, and put them in a world together. Or you turn on random mutations, and see what evolution does to your ecosystem!

Concept is fun, however there are some glaring issues for me. One, performance, it's abysmal. Two, new parts just kinda pop up, there are no transition periods, even whales had legs that slowly became smaller and went away. Controls are very annoying too.
tbh pirated game played for at least 40 hours and decided that SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY THIS GAME DESERVES TO BE INVESTED IN game already feels like finished (other than optimization problem which is actually pretty normal for an early access game this massive) the amount of details put thought into is surprising me consistently. Hope devs get the appreciation they deserve

Great concept for a game and has a lot of potential but virtually unplayable in its current state. Considering this has been in development for seven years and basic things such as camera clunkiness and annoying controls are still an issue, not to mention the lag, I cannot recommend this game at the moment. And yes, I fully appreciate that the game has been put together by a single dev. Buy it when it's on sale (which I wish I had done) and it is fun for a couple of hours but definitely not worth the usual price
Its very fun, love having a newer creature sim, but it desperately needs to be better optimized it runs horribly.
The game is good, but it could be better. I’ve put together a few things you could add, Wessel Stop: Scenarios Mode: You could provide more detailed explanations for certain parts and include explanations for features found in Sandbox mode—like planet editing, which took me a while to figure out how to use. Sandbox Mode: You could add a mechanic to change the spectral class of the star our planet orbits (e.g., from Type G to Type M) and a system to add natural satellites or allow us to create life on them. It would be great to choose whether we orbit a rocky or gas planet. You could also add an atmospheric chemistry system to let us tweak the planet's gases and equip animals with traits allowing them to breathe different gases (like hydrogen, as on Titan). Additionally, an axial and tidal system would be cool—allowing us to apply tidal effects or lock a celestial body's axis (like tidal locking), forcing life to adapt to living only in the twilight zone, or eventually adapting to eternal day or eternal night. Finally, you could include unicellular life so we can truly start from the very dawn of life. I hope you read this and add one of these suggestions to make the game even more immersive and scientifically grounded.
As a fan of both speculative evolution and simulation games, this is quite literally my DREAM game! I just finished playing through all the scenarios and my first daily challenge, and it was very interesting to see what challenges I faced along the way and discover ways to overcome them. I cannot wait to check out the sandbox mode tomorrow!! If you like biology, speculative evolution, sci-fi, and/or a game where you can just sit back and relax, this game is right up your alley. Plus, if you enjoy problem solving, the daily challenges provide not only a great way to learn how the game works further than the scenarios guide you, I find they are also engaging for your brain! I also have been interested in making videogames for a long time myself, and I cannot go without saying, I have HUGE respect for Wessel Stoop, as he has made all of this completely solo, from the music, to the art, to the code itself. Bravo! This is simply amazing, and I cannot wait to see where it goes next :)
Would not recommend buying yet. I have 100s of hours of Spore playtime, have watched dozens of Youtube videos of this game, and had it on my wishlist for what feels like forever. I finally bought it this weekend and here's my genuine thoughts. I still have confidence this game will eventually be worth it, but in its current state these are what make it actually frustrating to play [olist] [*]UI feels clunky and unpredictable. Whether its the world builder, the creature creator, or the in game views- the lack of polish unfortunately makes it a significant challenge even with scenario tutorials. [*]Evolution / survival detail is awful to deal with. It doesn't seem to matter what I create, there is little feedback to understand why a creature survives or dies. Creatures died out because of starvation? Good luck troubleshooting that. That tree you created mutated 10 times, how cool! Can you see that progression easily? Surprisingly, not really (re-UI issues). [*]Colors & Climates feel 'ugly'. I adore the realism of how the game incorporates biology with light spectrum and climate zones. However... I frequently find the colors in their current state look awful on plants and animals. The climate zones result in landscapes that look really gross (awkward equator bands, etc.). Super subjective, but does also relate to UI since both of these cause additional friction when creating worlds. [/olist] Very confident in the creator, who I have seen be active in forums. The level of complexity is what this player wants, so this isn't an ask for less complexity. I just feel the game is in a state now where UI polish and accessible data to provide player feedback is a necessary priority. Excited to come along for the journey, but not ready to recommend to others just yet.
Yo the game is fun but the performance is horrible, please optimize your game :(
"It is made with great care, has a very stable update frequency, and I hope you can keep it up. This is the best evolution sandbox game I have played so far. However, I have the following requests: 1. I hope you can add a separate save slot for individual creatures, so that players can directly place their favorite creatures into different maps. 2. I hope you can increase the time acceleration speed to five档 (five levels / up to 5x speed). 3. I hope that when creatures evolve, most mutations are harmful (this is more realistic, at least according to textbooks). 4. I hope players can manually adjust the size of a creature's hands, feet, tail, and other limbs. 5. If you could add a multiplayer mode where players can create creatures together and place them to compete, that would greatly increase the fun of the game. 6. I hope you can add a mode that does not display the creature and map models, but only shows the data of each creature and the minimap. This would lower the hardware requirements, make it easier to understand the game's rules, and help new players get started. 7. Optimization! Optimization! Optimization! There are still quite a few bugs. For example, when viewing the family tree, the view always shifts to the upper left corner, so players can only see a few lines and it's very difficult to move to the desired position using the keyboard and mouse. 8. The autosave frequency needs to be increased, to prevent the program from crashing later when there are too many creatures on the screen. 9. Please make sure to release a mobile version. That will be a blue ocean market, and it will surely sell very well. 10. Please add more language translations for the game."
Fun game performance is terrible I play this on the second smallest map with everything on low and the game still slows to a crawl.
