The Rainman

I wanted to judge the rainman on its own terms. Sure, The Happyhill homicide being free and literally being a one and a half hour unique take on the slasher genre while still giving us all the goods of said genre was impressive, but obviously The Rainman being an earlier work meant that I needed to be ready for the lack of polish (like if you are holding the umbrella and running, the sprite of the character running without umbrella and the sprite of her holding an umbrella would overlap instead of there being a separate sprite for the character running while holding umbrella) and the unfortunate lack of content. It wouldn't sting so much, if it weren't for the fact that a free game like Happyhill Homicide had more content that was better realized than this. Again, I am trying my best not to compare, but cannot help think of the fact that if this was free and Happyhill Homicide was charged, I would feel less of a purchase regret lol. Still, that comparison and regret aside, there is some good things here. The sound design during the home invasion is excellent, the pixel art (when they are not stuttering) during rain is beautiful, and while the story and its reveal and the motivations of the killer were ultimately laughable and over the top, there are some really great moment of tensions here, that works as a pre-cursor to the actual and more well realized tension we would see in The Happyhill Homicide. The surface level idea of the Rainman is not bad either, it is just the execution that falls short. I am kind of a bit split here, as I don't want to judge a developer's first work too harshly, but I also don't want to recommend people that they buy it when I also don't feel completely confident if this needed a purchase when longer and more well realized game on itch could be found for free. Still let me put it this way, if it helps you decide. Play The Happyhill Homicide. If you like that game and was like, "Man this is so good I wish I could pay for it somehow", then you buy The Rainman to show your support to the devs (alongside The Happyhill Homicide 2 too), and consider the purchase you are making of Rainman as a purchase of The Happyhill homicide, and not that of The Rainman. That way, you will feel less guilty about buying Rainman, as you can just treat this game as a bonus to see how the devs earlier work looked like. However, if you hated Happyhill Homicide, then I completely recommend against it, as you would somehow get even less than that game, and you would see the devs at their even less polished state and at their most amateur, since it is after all their first game and nobody discovers their style or themselves upon their first game. Still, you do what you do with your money. The devs, even when rough, are talented bunch and I am interested in their games going forward.
