This is an excerpt of my much more detailed review and analysis, that you can find here (ENG & DE) and also as Video below.
| Visit and maybe follow my curator page, to get more detailed reviews |

Opinion and conclusion
Overall, I find the combination of Early Access and RPG a bit difficult. Because you usually play through RPGs only once because of the story and a later re-run after Early Access is rather unlikely. I would prefer internal beta testing and a proper release here. A bigger point of criticism in the current versions is the balancing. This starts with the hit chances or rather the very high miss rate, as this sometimes stretches the fights too much. Although, I gave most characters points on Accuracy several times.
Video:
German voice-over, many subtitles https://youtu.be/6pe4z_ahRC8 The game is on a rather slower path as far as the pace of play is concerned. Everything is rather leisurely, hectic rarely occurs and you have enough time to think about your next steps. Additionally, small delays happen again and again in the battles, and this is where it gets a bit too slow for my liking. Often an opponent has to finish his animation before it continues. Also, for some reason I don’t understand, the skill buttons get a sort of 3-second pause between actions before they are released for the next one. Here, you could make the game feel a bit more grippy and fluid by reducing these rather unnecessary pauses. ... shortened, read full review for more: https://zapzockt.de/en/the-protagonist-ex-1-review-test/ But all in all, the positive gameplay experience outweighs the negative for me, despite all the rough edges and minor problems. The role-playing system is surprisingly comprehensive for such a small indie title. The level design, aside from the graphics, is varied, the story is not uninteresting and the battles and puzzles are definitely entertaining.
Rating:
The Protagonist offers a wide-ranging mix of turn-based strategy combat, switch puzzles, and complex level design to keep us as players on our toes. And that’s interwoven with classic RPG party and some character classes, as well as an extensive story. As you should expect from the Early Access label, there are still some construction sites, but still, for under €11 or $13, you get a game here in which you can spend some entertaining hours as a role-playing game lover and fan of turn-based tactics. Considering the game’s offerings so far, Protagonist EX-1 gets a 75% basic rating from me. Minor balancing and game design issues make for a 4% deduction, but for the tremendously low price, there’s a whopping 10% bonus. This brings me to the current final score of 81% for The Protagonist EX-1. If the team rounds off the rough edges a bit more with further patches, it might become a little pearl for role-playing game fans in terms of price-performance.
UPd.

A potentially great game, with lots of love put into its system, which makes the fact of it being abandoned so much more frustrating. I got into another soft lock that will not allow me to progress and can't seemingly be fixed by reloading, so I am giving it up. Don't play this game if you are not into huge disappointments, it starts out great, makes you love it, then cuts it when you have just started enjoying.
Recommended to fans of turn-based tactics RPGs who don't mind a budget title. Held back by some bugs and clunkiness but combat and leveling skills are fun. Definitely worthwhile on sale. +Content for the price +Key rebinding +Some voice acting +Manual & auto saves +Turn-based tactics battles +Exploration/adventure +Music +Variety of weapons/items to craft +Discover new craft recipes/schematics +Martial arts/combos +Special moves/finishers +Choices on level up stats/skills +Variety of skills +Heal after battle +Buddy is a good boi -Slow menu/delays -Dated visuals/animations -Click to move only -Can't name saves -No graphics options/vsync, etc -Most dialogue is not voiced -Some obscure/poorly explained systems/info -No mini/map -Awkward click to advance dialogue (use spacebar) -Clunky, buggy, lacks polish -No quicksaves, buggy save UI -Esc doesn't always work/back out menu -Slow tooltips/animations -Cluttered portraits/ battle info box -Some important keys cannot rebind -Free camera only in combat -Box puzzles can bug out/ stop progression -Awkward click/drag only for crafting -Floating enemies can be hard to select -Chance to hit is not displayed -Stats don't display how much/when increase move, hit, etc. -Few enemy types -Lacking story/writing, reliance on profanity -Few interesting/likable characters -Poor balance among weapon types -No noticeable difference among 4 martial styles
This is a really solid little early access tactical turn-based shooter. The graphics and audio are both pleasing and the combat and crafting are addictive and satisfying. I do wish that the gameplay was quicker and more difficult though. All-in-all, for $13 this game is definitely worth it. Check out my full review here!---v https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thwb0cJQoa8
https://youtu.be/7lsr8dRDuhA 6/10 You play as angel, leader of a highly trained special ops team on a mission to infiltrate a space station of an invading synthetic race of unknown origin. The team is soon captured and Angel wakes up with her memory missing and her crew and has to rely on her training and the assistants of a disembody voice who calls himself Pilot to save the remain team members and escape.
Gameplay
Gameplay in the Protagonist is revolving around exploring the station, solving puzzles and combat. Exploring the station, you will find clues and info on what the aliens are planning with video logs and visuals around the station that show the horrors consisting with their plans. The station its self is very basic and one toned with the same tiles and wall patterns, with this bluish-purple color tone scattered everywhere. I don’t know if the game is planning to extend outside the station but, if not, they really need to diverse the scenery to prevent the game from being bland and give destinations from one location to the next. The puzzles you will run into consistently are simple with either moving blocks on to a pressure plate or using angels hacking ability to open doors, move platforms and find new logs and blueprints for crafting. Nothing complicated and for me I didn’t feel like any puzzle was an inconvenience, but I wall give you a little hint when you hack into information terminals. When you hack you will find multiple notes or blueprints you can collect them all, just re-hack the terminal. I thought like all other games it giving you options and you can only pick one. You can collect all but just the annoying processes of selecting one and redoing the action, best advise just put a claim all button. Lastly the combat Consisting of CQB and fire arms, most of your guns and items will be crafted using scrap metal and can be leveled up whilst crafting to whatever your teams highest crafting level is. CQB combat is a strange mash of punch, elbow, knee, and kick symbols with varying levels. CQB is really clunky and once I get fire arms, I use it very rarely. The fire arms though are nice with different variants able to craft from, emp, electric, and others soon to be released. Giving you more options to strategize and fight. The issues with combat I have seen is the movement and leveling up after that have flaws. Movement in combat is extremely small, with most of the characters only able to move 3 to 4 squares ahead which is not bad in some areas but other combat arenas are big and you could run through 3 to 4 turns before you will be in range to attack, you can upgrade your characters to supposedly increase the range of movement, but this was the issue I had with leveling up. You can see the upgrade when you want to increase your health and crafting skill, but it seems that upgrading anything else is just useless. I never could see any tangible increase or change when upgrading gun stats of the characters or even accuracy. Also, with the proficiency's you can upgrade with things like grenades, and firearms, they don’t detail what this is helping you with so they honestly feel useless and soon found myself just setting the points anywhere just to get rid of them. I don’t know if it’s a bug and nothing is happening or they need to add a description pop up when you hover over them to let you know what you are upgrading. Like they do with your base stats.
Graphics and Sound Design.
The graphics are on the retro ps2 style with awkward animations and sometimes creepy facial moments. The character pool is also limited with only a hand full of unique characters and enemies, the enemies revolve around the same 2 floating robots with a dog version coming in the last stage, and the main characters of the squad being unique but the others you will recruit all being the same generic male or female soldiers. Then like I said before everything in the environment is repeated and can become boring quickly with no distinct difference in each area. Sound design on the other hand is quite good, fire arms sound weighty and punchy, destroying walls and enemies is satisfying and the limited acted dialogue is well preformed, with crisp audio. Music in the game is nice with ominous music while exploring and combat music that fits.
Overall
Overall, the game has potential, a few things need to be fixed and with it in early access I'm sure many changes will be made hopefully most for the better. The game so far spans about 4 to 5 hours with logs and dialog that build up the world but nothing that gives you the full picture. If you are looking for a completed game, Wishlist the game and wait, if you wanna try it out for yourself the game is 12.99 and may increase as production continues.
Abandonware.
