Review with accompanying screenshots and video in Sinical Network
https://www.sinicalanimenetwork.com/post/the-pizza-delivery-boy-who-saved-the-world-review The Pizza Delivery Boy Who Saved the World is Oh, a Rock! Studios's sixth game in Steam. It is a slice of life visual novel with science fiction and thriller that uses photographs of different places, actors, and actresses to carry you through the story. The protagonist is a pizza delivery boy named Doug Rivers (which can be customized by player) who works for Proud City Pizza. The joint is ran by a mean and demanding owner and a poorly motivated staff. Despite working under such conditions, a visit by a person from the future will change Doug's life forever. It only takes a couple of hours to fully complete the game and to obtain all the endings and achievements, but it left a positive impression on me. The scriptwriter is quite imaginative delivering a funny story with a zany cast of characters. The story is a mix of comedy and suspense brought to life by the "real" photos used throughout. The expressions and poses really add to the comedy. In terms of background music, it is average and simply fulfills the role of having it where needed, so nothing more needs to be said about this topic. One thing that players might find frustrating though, is the Steam achievement that requires giving the protagonist a specific name after a famous American celebrity. Although there is a Steam community guide to help players obtain this achievement, the name is not mentioned anywhere in the game, nor are there any hints to help players guess the name but instead relies on your familiarity with Internet memes. This could be obvious for some, and maybe lost on others. I found The Pizza Delivery Boy Who Saved the World to be a funny and entertaining slice of life, science fiction and thriller visual novel where the use of photographs really added to the humor. The story is a bit short providing only a few hours of content so it might be better to wait for a discount when the price is more proportional to the playing time. Still, I do appreciate the fact that I found myself laughing out loud several times from the storyline and dialogue which doesn't have any crude words or fan service elements that many other visual novels use to achieve this result and just overall enjoyed my time with the game. Therefore, I hope to see more funny and creative visual novels from this developer and publisher in future. Suitably cheesy, given the subject matter - badoomp-tish! - but pretty darned decent for what it is. Surprisingly well-written and witty, visually and aurally appealing (within the confines of its limited, lo-fi resources), with an eminently enjoyable story. Suffice it to say, if you're expecting the greatest visual and/or interactive novel in the history of such things, you're a bit of an eejit and fully deserving of the disappointing fate that awaits you. Expect nothing more than well-executed light entertainment, and satisfaction shall surely be yours. Oh, and they even manage to drop the name of the game into the dialogue during the epilogue! Silly, but clever (like this product as a whole). And I got 66% of Achievements on the first playthrough, so that's nice (though the full price is possibly a bit much for a playthrough of fewer than two hours, so consider a sale)! Verdict: 8.5/10. Really liked this game, it is funny and has some kind of coziness. Also after purchasing I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this game was made by the guy, whose Nancy Drew letsplays I watched at high school. So many thanks to developers for brightening my evening!
Not well written and unfunny.
Who knew being a pizza delivery boy could end up being full of adventure and wackiness? Though this visual novel is rather short, the charm in the presentation and writing is hefty. It can be a bit cheesy (see that? Pizza pun!) at times, but it adds to the enjoyment and goes perfectly with the overall light-hearted feel of the story. With numerous dialogue choices throughout the story, you can't see everything there is to offer in one playthrough: the short length of the game is a perfect accompaniment in this regard. Fans and non-fans of visual novels will find amusement here as you try to save the world, delivering one pizza at a time.
The Pizza Delivery Boy Who Saved The World is as ridiculous as it sounds. The game is developed by Oh, a Rock! Studios, who are responsible for other intentionally over the top and ridiculous visual novels such as "Cat President -A More Purrfect Union-", "The Awkward Steve Duology" and "The Beard in the Mirror". The Pizza Delivery Boy Who Saved The World is the first I have played through by the Oh, a Rock! Studios, and it lived up to what I hoped it would be. The game focuses around the Hero, Doug Rivers (or whatever other name you choose to give him. John Cena for the win!), an under-appreciated worker at a local Pizza joint. He goes through tough times as he works his way through daily life, only to be dragged into a dangerous plot that threatens the world. It's incredibly relatable to anyone who has had a job like this and even to myself, who hasn't, it still keeps that element of relatablity clear with every scene. It's ridiculous and fun, ultimately achieving everything it intended to do. However, there are a few problems with the VN that stop it from being the best in its role. Biggest problem for me by far is the price. I'm not that quick of a reader and I didn't pick every choice. I did get all the achievements though, in just over an hour. Considering its asking price is $7 USD, this is way too short. It can easily be knocked over in a single sitting, and the kinetic-ish nature of the novel limits replayability. The game is definitely worth it on sale, but keep this in mind when buying. The UI, whilst looks great, has a few problems. The UI doesn't give you access to the skip and auto modes from the main screen. Other normal VN features like the backlog are also non-existant. Another problem is the top of some text characters (like 'h' and 'k') being visible before the scroll goes over it. This will probably be fixed in a bug fix however. Overall, The Pizza Delivery Boy Who Saved The World is a great comedic Visual Novel which has its flaws. But despite them, it is definitely a worthwhile experience. My breakdown: PROS: + Comedic. Every point of the game is ridiculous and satirical. Really well done. + Enjoyable. Whilst it may not be the most complete visual novel out there, it excels in the area that matters most: enjoyment. + Soundtrack. Really good at setting the vibe for the game. Could have been used better in some of the scenes, but for the most part it works. + Choices. Massive emphasis on choice. Even if the options all ended with a similar result, it helped to make the story experience stronger. + Art. I'm not big on the realistic style to it all, but there is good variety to it all. + Nameable Main Character. Always a good addition. CONS: - Short. My biggest gripe with the game is that it's too short for the asking price. (100% after just over an hour). - Characters. Not really much in the way of change. I understand not much can get done in an hour of gameplay, but it felt like hero didn't change at all. - Laggy start menu. I was getting some crazy FPS drops on the right click menu. I don't know why. - UI. Most important features such as auto and skip are locked behind the system menu, which you have to go through the aforementioned laggy menu to get to. - No backlog. Unless I'm an idiot, this feature wasn't implemented. -Scores- Story: 7 Characters: 6 Art: 6 Music: 8 Enjoyment: 9 Overall: 7/10 tl;dr, Short but enjoyable. Wait for a sale. _____ Frost | Steam Profile Follow our Curator Page Join our Curator Discord
There is definitely nothing more that I needed in my life other than a visual novel about Pizza. And secret future stuff. Plus, I'm in the game and I'm still geeking out about it. :D
One of the best experiences Ive had with a game. Will only take 2-3 hours, but its worth full price.
This is one of the greatest games ever made. I cannot recommend it higher. I enjoyed it a lot, and this is the kind of design ethos that I want to see more of in the world. Yes!
Oh my crap. Even though it is considerably short (around 3 hours of gameplay) I enjoyed it a lot. I work as a delivery boy myself and laughed so hard at how true the delivery life is depicted. I absolutely recommend this to anyone who likes VN genre.
