This game might be ok, if you've read the original story. But without the existing context the game feels confusing and unpolished. The game doesn't explain much to anything to you and the puzzles are either boring or just frustrating. As such I cannot recommend this game unless you are a big fan of clunky horror games

If you like your horror graphical novel type games short , The picture in the House will not disappoint.
Positives
That HP Lovecraft vibe, psychological horror down to the T. Immersive, scary, but not crap in your rods scary. It is short, puzzles, bar one are easy enough. Puzzles are unique and make sense (bar one.) It's free, and pretty well told. Decent narration and sound effects.
Negatives
Heavy graphics card load and lag on puzzle interactions. One puzzle is just plain random no idea why. No saves, although it's a short game, so saves are a bit pointless Still reading? check out my Distressing games list for more like this.
I really wanted to like this game, since the atmosphere and set up was good and I tend to like interactive Lovecraft games. However, many areas of the game are extremely dark, to the point where it was almost impossible to locate certain interactable areas (doors, drawers, and lamps, ironically) and important objects necessary to progress the game without basically clinging to walls and hoping for the best, and you are never given a portable light source. This was made worse by the fact that certain interactive objects required you to stand in a particular spot to work, but you can't see where that spot is in the dark. This became especially nightmarish when trying to navigate through a maze of boxes in the attic. Additionally, I hated the interface for the books, where they are basically shoved into your face whenever you walk to close to them. I had to restart the game when one book glitched out and stayed open even when I had wandered away; the book completely obscured my vision, and I had no way to put it down and continue the game.
"The Picture in The House" is a weird one. The developer basically ripped off a HP Lovecraft story (he's still spinning in his grave from all the abuse he gets from creatively bankrupt amateur devs), but put it onto an only mostly terrible and genuine attempt to make a game. Yeah, that's right, this doesn't come across as an asset flip... which doesn't mean it's great, but it's at least a breath of fresh air. What do you do in the game? It's an adventure game, and playing this is actually significantly worse than just reading a HP Lovecraft story. Which I would recommend over this... from rather mediocre graphics to laughably bad voice acting... well, at least this is sincerely made. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this.
I don't recommend it. Even though it's a free game, there are some issues that I've noticed that make the game not worth playing. There is no run option, you're walking at a slow pace almost like you're drunk with moon boots on. There are different glitches that causes your game to just stop (Ladder glitch, blood plate glitch), and with the game being a game where you have to play the entire thing in one go with no saves, it sucks the fun out of it. I wasted an hour because of the ladder glitch, after spending 10 minutes looking for the last two wood pieces it decided to double up my character and show me the image of the ladder. That's it. If you are wanting to play it: make sure your brightness level is all the way up and the shadows option all the way down, it makes searching for the ladder wood pieces much easier. Also the lever puzzle: click the rat/mouse lever twice, owl lever once, and wolf lever 4 times.
As someone who has read the story, I can say that it is well done. It is immersive and interesting.
