Genre
Ein recht gutes Horror Point & Click Adventure
Story
+ Musik ganz OK + Sound ganz OK + Leichte Achievements + Sammelkarten +/- Story etwas verwirrend - Entäuschendes Ende
Fazit
Ein ganz gutes Point & Click Adventure mit recht Leichten Achievements. Definitiv einen Blick wert 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Kuratorengruppe auf deutsch/englisch 👑⠀⠀⠀🎉 Folgen
Please consider, that I follow this game since its first demo, I got it before the steam release so I have much more time in it than my profile suggests.
Short review
I strongly recommend the game for those who enjoy story oriented/logic/horror games. The game is challenging and has a nice art style.
Longer review
As the description says you will have to collect stuff and create equipment to challenge your enemies, but more importantly the story will be able to keep you in front of your PC until the end. The game has a very nice and polished art style. It has its very own atmosphere, the world is living and disturbing. Sounds are okay as well. The overall game experience is polished and smooth, the game is stable and has a lot of content in it. Unfortunately, the trailer is weak in my opinion, you don't really get a good picture of the game. Basically, it's just a short gameplay video. What a pity! What I didn't like is the jumping/running part. It's a bit hard, but still, not overwhelming, you will get over it. Also, maybe it's conceptional, but I missed music. The game has some, but it builds on noise and other sounds, but not really on music. We really need original indie games here on Steam. Don't wait, support!
The Overdreamer is a horror themed puzzle-platformer that takes around 4-5 hours to complete. I skipped this game several times because the trailer was not visually appealing, which could have been a big mistake. Actually, the game does not look that bad when you consider all of the original artwork and other detail in the environment. The dark-fantasy vibe and gory animations reminds me another game with a little girl - Fran Bow. Probably the best part of the game is the narrative; also creative puzzles that complement the tone of the story. There are some infrequent glitches and the gameplay could use more polish, but overall it plays decently. If you are enthusiastic about any campy horror games, at $3 you will have a hard time finding a better experience.
Gameplay mechanics & puzzles
I was surprised in terms of how many gameplay elements the game managed to utilize. It plays like a platformer but it also incorporates other mechanics: point&click controls for inspecting, survival elements like healing items, hidings places, combat, and inventory system. The controls were actually very intuitive when compared to similar games. I found that puzzles were not too difficult and yet very creative - most of the time. You can even turn into a fly later in the game which adds more dynamic exploration. There are many semi-hard minigame puzzles but I thought they were done really well (the game almost taught me to how to play piano xD). All of the items have basic and additional description which is always a welcome feature. In general, I feel that developer put a good amount of effort into the puzzle solving aspect.
Narrative & atmosphere
The soundtrack was decent but I assume it is not original based on the credits. I liked the sinister atmosphere even though it failed to put any fear in me. While I enjoyed the story and the pacing of the plot, the game could use a better text formatting. Like put some backgrounds behind the text choices so I can see the words. Overall, the game could use some aesthetic touch when it comes to menus and showing dialogue. I found the story pretty intriguing although I don't want to give any spoilers. It has this psychological aspect where you cycle in and out of dreams. Not exactly original ideas but they were presented in a fun way. Pros: + interesting narrative and characters + lots of mechanics and decent controls + many creative puzzles + nice variety in environments + good length for a cheap game Cons: - occasional glitches - lacks some proper sound effects - visual quality is not consistent (ugly menus) - no original soundtrack
Overall Thoughts 7/10
Whenever I write a long review - it usually means that game is very creative, regardless of the price or quality. For a game that sells around $3 it was a big surprise for me. If you like games like Fran Bow or Sally Face you might get a kick out of it. Maybe it is not as good as those but I still enjoyed it a lot. Even though it lacks polish in some areas, I would still highly recommend it for anyone that likes campy horror. First look at The Over Dreamer on the Steam platform. A very good atmospheric game that has its let downs in the auto save system and unclear game path. I found that this game is made repetitive by constant death and the save file sending you back to far, an easy issue to fix with more save checkpoints. The only other issue I had was navigation, most of the doors look the same and a few of the doors are hidden in complete darkness. Like the developer didn't want you to find them and progress with the story to quickly. Same for the crafting system, there are no hints and no help with what items can be put together. While for the most part this works thanks to common sense, there are times you can spend to long thinking about a puzzles solution. Another minor issue is having to watch the same intro sequence to a puzzle every time you die and re-spawn. There is a part later on where the "Boogieman" is chasing you and you have to drop down some shelves, the intro sequence shows him opening the hatch above you every time you die with no option to skip. As I personally died here many millions of times this got old fast. This is a great little game with my favorite type of atmosphere for a platformer, dark and mysterious. All the negative above is out weighed by the games story, art and core mechanics. I would recommend it to friends. Gameplay: 9/10 Map Design: 6/10 Interface: 7/10 Music: 9/10 OVERALL: 8/10
IN KURZFORM: - Gruseliger Artstyle zwischen realistisch und Comic... - Interessante Rätsel - Tolle Atmosphäre - Viele Arten grausam zu sterben - Gute Steuerung - Macht viel Spaß!
Good atmosphere, graphic, easy control. Interesting stroy. Good game for 5-6$!
The game ended a bit too soon. I was expecting more... But still, I had fun playing it. For those who want to see more of the game, just check out my video playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlSUMOckxhN_dljjSA2zLDFebRs2Hypqk

A mesmerizing and atmospheric puzzle game! 🌌 The dreamy visuals and calming soundtrack create a unique experience. Highly recommended for lovers of surreal and tranquil games!
Buen juego, poco conocido. Con una ambientación un tanto oscura, si bien no es visualmente sorprendente tiene algunos momentos muy bien llevados. Suele estar bien barato, así que sí, recomendado.
