Publisher screwed over the developer big time. DO NOT SUPPORT THEM. DO NOT BUY.
When I had initially played this game on its initial release, I was very pleased with the current gameplay loop and was curious to see where it would go as the roadmap had rolled out. However, as a lot of people who keep up know, the creator's game was sort of 'deceieved' in a way where the publishing company had screwed the game over, and had lead into a large lawsuit case now lasting 2 years. But now that 2 year long wait is over. The game is now out of that wretched publisher's grasp! So do reconsider your negative reviews as the current longstanding issue has since been resolved. This game has a lot going for it, and it certainly doesn't deserve the negativity that it has gotten! Thanks Conrad for making this moment possible!
They got the game back!!! It was unpolished on the original rushed release, but it still had tons of promise and enjoyment with what was presented in gameplay and story. Give these guys another chance!!
This game has good bones, and I want to like it. However, it it ultimately ends up feeling like it's incomplete. The maps are huge but mostly empty. The combat gets repetitive quickly. The story and characters feel half-baked. This game would probably need some kind of major overhaul/update to all of the aforementioned aspects before I could recommend it to someone, but I doubt that will happen considering the what happened between the dev and the publisher.
A cozy little Paper Mario-inspired RPG, The Outbound Ghost is worth checking out if you're looking for a something to scratch the same itch. Just don't expect AAA-level scope and polish, this is clearly an indie labour of love.
Beyond the events occurring between the Developer and the Publisher, Outbound Ghost just isn't a fun game. A shifting main character, that keeps previous characters' weapons and items, a story that argues against itself, and very linear level design will be the least of your complaints. Good luck finding what status effect does what, as well! The first three chapters are very solid, and the gameplay has some interesting ideas with it. However, there are some strategies that kinda break the gameplay, chapter 4 is a HUGE amount of backtracking, and the payoff at the end of the story feels worthless. Not only that, but so many major plot things NEVER HAPPEN. If you'd like to know more about that, ask, as I'd like to not spoil on the review itself.
The Outbound Ghost - A Ghost of a Game
This game has a lot of potential, but as it stands now, this feels more like a late stage alpha release. If there are some big updates that tie up loose ends and adds more content, this may be worth buying. As it stands, this game really isn't complete. The Good - This game maps are beautiful. Each area looks picturesque. So much so that there are areas throughout that seem designed specificly to appreciate the sight. - The combat system overall is fairly nice, allowing players to approach battles in a multitude of ways. The Bad - The size of the maps are simply enormous. While beautiful, this size makes it feel tedious to travel. Even the fast travel doesn't help alleviate the tedium of travel because each area is so immense. - Boss Fights can be extremely tedious. Boss's have a ton of health, usually a couple of side goons to act as support, and powers beyond your imagining. On normal difficulty it isn't too bad, but even then, battles can be lengthy and the outcome questionable. The Ugly - The game has a lot of loose ends. For instance,
What's the deal with the V cult? The principal of Checkov's gun, would suggest there's more to it. Did they poison the town's water supply? Did they all die with the town? And what about the figments? Apparently they existed before everybody died, what's their deal?
tl;dr The story has a minimal exposition, the beginnings of a rising action, and a good though somewhat rushed climax. But that's it. No resolving plot points. No happy, or at least satisfying, ending. Just a
"The End" screen and a new character to wander around and fight new and stronger bosses with. I would love if this game was updated with more content and this could just be considered a false ending that gets revealed to be a red hearing later on.
- The game is empty of content. There are no real side quests or side stories or anything. Just npc's that stand there aimlessly. (Then again, they are ghosts, and I guess ghosts don't need much now do they?) There is a lot of items to make craftables, but they are so plentiful, that they don't really signify any value. If the drop rates were a little more rare and items less plentiful in general, finding things would be a bit more exciting. - The characters need developing. Simply put all the characters seem pretty one dimensional. Given the length of the game currently, this isn't too surprising.
The Long and Short of It
This game looks great, but feels ok, but has some major issues with the story/content. If this is treated as an Alpha, this could become an incredible game. On the other hand, without major updates, this game will just be smeared ink blot on the pages of history.
The suit has been dismissed, the war is over!!!
