Advancing to bad ending whlist hunting achivements caused me severe psychic damage wonderful game
It's been ages since I played it but realised I never wrote a review for it This game is underrated to all hell, genuinely more people should play it because it's REALLY good
This is a mostly spoiler free review of SUITS with very minor gameplay spoilers included. Upon first inspection, I had no idea what this game was about, All i knew was two things. 1. The Music was nothing i had heard before 2. This ♥♥♥♥ looks weird as hell. These two things kept the game in my head for a couple months. Come this summer sale i had trouble remembering what games i wanted to buy, and it hit me. OH YEAH! Suits: Absolute Power is a weird, stupid, and oddly charming RPG.
STORY
This game unlike the Original (Apparently) seems to have a greater focus on story. without saying too much the story is completely bonkers. personally, i seek out games with good stories especially RPGS. A good story can really make, break or save a game from being bad. SUITS has a story but it's not on the same level as OMORI or other more serious RPGS. The story is pretty cookie-cutter but it gets the job done, it facilitates the other aspects of the game well enough. The story's simplicity helps the game shine in other ways and allows there to be a large amount of completely stupid moments. If you like a game that ends but isn't too heavy on the feels, this is a good candidate. The Game also features 2 endings based on how difficult you want the game to be, it's a nice touch but the mechanic surrounding this a bit flawed in this capacity. It could be more strict but if you decide to buckle down it could be a fun challenge. (Or not)
Combat
Another one of the weaker aspects of the game is the combat which is have separated from the over-world gameplay is the combat. SUITS combat is pretty basic. HP hits zero you die, skills cost AP, you recharge a bit of AP and HP every turn, Basic attack costs no AP and can't miss, standard stuff. Some skills down the line add a bit of complexity to combat but not by much. some skills are completely useless for the most part and some you literally just use every time. This makes fights pretty one-note. Even when you become
Corrupted
you just get stronger and that's it. Certain moves also have a deceptively Iffy accuracy, Kick in particular for some reason. This however made the experience a little fun in a weird sorta way. You can imagine i was screaming at the screen hoping i would land the last attack to kill a boss. speaking of landing last attacks, there's also a damage range. attacks do not do a fixed amount of damage based on stats and instead have a range. this again adds to the chaotic nature of combat and adds another layer of uncertainty. The SHOOT skill is the main representative of this, it can either do HUGE damage or barely more than the normal attack. It can sometimes be pretty frustrating but luckily the game is short and more often than not you get just what you need to win. On the Enemy side it gets a little more interesting. The Enemies have certain skills and they use them seemingly randomly, they also have a chance to miss based on the skill. This makes fights vert chaotic and actually pretty fun if you're into that. (some people aren't) Sometimes they heal when they already have max HP, sometimes they one-shot one of your party members. This is especially nail-biting later in the game when the enemies become absurdly strong and are able to steamroll you if they so wish. the combat difficulty is also pretty up and down. i found certain enemies to be harder than the BIG BADS of the game, a lot of the time it just came down to the normal enemy being more willing to pound me into dirt while the Boss wanted to do it's dumb gimmick, this isn't always the case though. On a side note healing is pretty scarce in SUITS, you WILL Need to use Healing items and there is no picnic basket, pokemon center, nothing. You have to use items after every battle to heal up, luckily the healing items affect the entire squad in the over-world. Another side note, the gear customization is extremely bare bones, the equipment gives stats, and it affects the ENTIRE party. there's no room for custom builds but considering the flat nature of combat, it isn't really needed anyway.
Art-style and Aesthetics
The art in this game is either, Ugly as ♥♥♥♥, or completely sick (in a good way). this game has a very janky feel to it which i find extremely charming. the over-world is pretty simple and the some sprites aren't scaled properly and look pretty awful i'll admit but for some reason it doesn't bug me too much. The real meat is the combat sprites and cutscenes. The combat sprites are on paper which flip when an action is performed, it's simple but looks pretty unique. the sprites themselves for your party have the semi-jank feel to them which just feels nice, like someone actually made this. It's just more personable. skill animations have an edge to em with speed lines conveying well...speed and some of them just being pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weird. When you become
Corrupted
the sprites look, for a lack of a better word ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the best way possible. The skill animations just get better and even more weird and freaky. The Enemies just have this weird factor by default and it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ AMAZING! The sheer amount of weird ass ♥♥♥♥ in this game is unparalleled, their skill animations are even freakier too. If you like this weird-factor BUY THIS GAME. Side note- The game is (obviously) uses black, white and gray? grey? for the entirety of the story which adds the dim, weird aesthetic and fits with the story as well. The lack of distinct areas however can sometimes lead to you getting lost, which is definitely a pain in the ass.
Music
The music in the game all have a somewhat similar sound to each other, combined with the fact that you only get to hear most songs ONCE yes, ONCE it can easily be blurred out but some favorites may stick out. There's a new song every single time you fight a new enemy which is bonkers considering the sheer amount of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you have to exterminate. this creates a never-ending stream of dopamine every time you fight a new enemy. The combination of banger music and the freaky designs always makes it entertaining. the music itself has a sort of artificial sound to it (Because it is!) but still sounds pretty damn good, it kinda has to considering most of the music is battle music. The artificial sound contributes to the atmosphere and i can definitely say it sounds like SUITS music.
Conclusion
If you like a game that ends, has a story but not a heavy one and like wild rides, give SUITS: ABSOLUTE POWER a go. It's literally 5 dollars. You ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cheap bastard.
Fun game !
Aside from a single softlock in the bean boss it was a smooth experience, I honestly didn't expect the concept to grip me so much no matter how silly it got at times. There was almost too much stuff to look at, everything had a description and rarely does enemies get recycled, I honestly felt bad using J to stunlock enemies because that meant I wouldn't see their animations. Did I enjoy the time I spent, yes. There was clearly a lot of love put into this, just the sheer amount of diaries and stuff to read is bonkers for a game of this price. Honestly I'd still have been happy to have paid 15 for the experience. The replayability is near zero though, but man... what a ride... even if I had no idea what was going on half the time.
There is no Russian localization, but the music is memorable.
One of the most creative concepts and settings for an RPG I've ever encountered.
The single best suits based rpg on the free market also the soundtrack slaps.
