I really wanted to like this game, and it has its great points, honestly feeling like a cross between classic point and click adventure games of yore, the immersive quality of games like MYST, and sneak-em-up games like Thief and Deus Ex, albeit without the swordplay or shooty bits. Unfortunately it has some deliberate design choices that really get in the way of being fun to play. Every single item and door and switch in the game has to be manipulated using a convoluted button combination that is clearly supposed to simulate the tactile and physical nature of the environment, but only leads to every interaction feeling clumsy, awkward, and when you are placed under time duress, which the game often does, it feels like the game is making you lose a battle with the controller just to do simple basic tasks, like open a door, use a keypad, operate a computer, climb up and obstacle etc, things which are 100% solved problems in every other first person game. Worse, there are many unforgivable usability bugs with the system, which leave you trapped in a contextual action with no way out, leaving you helplessly stuck to a keypad for example, while the security guards or characters approach, which punishes you with a fail state for no good reason. This would honestly only be disappointing, although somewhat tolerable, if it were not also for the fact that the game doesn't have any kind of quick save system, instead forcing you to play each chapter of the game uninterrupted, which means depending on how unlucky you are, an hour or more of effort can be instantly erased just because of a silly bug in the interface. I am writing this review having simply had to rage quit the game, very near the end, because I was not able to enter an alarm key code, because the controller interface was stuck on the context action for opening the plastic shield for the keypad. This is a very basic, obvious usability problem that should never have been allowed to make it into a production game, but clearly whoever wanted this in the game felt their ideas on how objects should be interacted with, are more important than just making a game that works how people generally expect. The irony is that all of these sorts of tactile control ideas are actually perfect for games intended to be played with a VR headset, but this is not one of them. Dear developer: I get that you wanted this to be an immersive, realistic world, but you have to also not forget that I am playing this with a simple twin stick game controller. If it becomes a painful effort for my character to be able to operate a cassette deck because the buttons on the device are infinitessimally small space on the screen, and my controller sensitivity prevents me from aiming at them to begin with, then it stops being an immersive simulation and starts simply being a pain in the arse. And now I am going to hate finish the game.
FIRST of all, guys: do not put the floppy disks in the SAFES/tables (do not exchange items from your hands there) - you will lose them; do not try to fool a guard stuck in the floor (scripts will run anyway - it's better to replay); do not change the screen resolution during your play (there are no adequate saves there). Gameplay: detective mechanics 8/10 stealth [buggy AI] 6/10 atmosphere 6/10 Gameplay as im.sim: 7/10 Lore and setting 5/10 <Story> Plot and characters/semiotics 6/10 Graphics [from 2012] 6/10 Sounds & music 7/10 [не доверяйте РУ переводу: ложные цифры] . It has several options for the development of events, it is immersive sim. "7/10"
The concept of the game is great - you play as an investigator who pokes around the areas, most of which you're not supposed to be in. Most of the time is spent gathering clues while avoiding security and other staff. This part of the game is great. You also have limited time to do everything, which adds some pressure. Unfortunately, the implementation of this system turned out very bare bones. You might expect that you need to memorize each person's schedule and act accordingly to where everyone is. In reality, you can just ignore most of the staff and do what you want, only stopping if there is security nearby. Your tool set is very limited. You don't talk to people outside scripted "interrogations" at the end of each level, which serve more as a result of your investigation, rather than a way to gather information. You can come up to a person during the investigation and press "speak", but they will just reply with a couple of phrases, and that's it. You can't move any objects around the level, so no box-stacking and similar stuff. The only things you can move are preset interactions like vent grates, windows, etc. The developers seem to run out of money very quickly, hence all these limitations. There are other proofs of that. In one of the levels half of the territory is not utilized for investigation, you can walk around there, but there is nothing to get in terms of clues or leads. It means that the level had a bigger scope but was cut in half. That's why we also only have 3 (or rather 2 and a half) "real" levels that involve investigation. Other levels are just linear fillers that are included just to pad out the game time. The story is told in a very abrupt manner, with many cuts and jumps back and forth. You do get the bigger picture of the plot, but the details are erratic at best, since they were probably also cut. It's also worth noting that there is no manual saving. It didn't really bother me, but it can be a stopper for someone since the main levels are one hour long, then there is an "intermission" level after each main one, and only after that you get an autosave. So if you want to play it in bite-size sessions, you are out of luck. Or if the game crashes, it will send you to the start of the level. Fortunately, the game never crashed on me. This is more of a proof-of-concept than a full game, but still worth a play if you like games about exploration and detective work.
I can see why this has such a mixed reaction. It doesn't hold your hand, and you're up against the clock (real-time which is nice) with no checkpoints or quicksaves etc. Making decisions, or failing to procure evidence results in deflating outcomes. Stressful situations where you're not Corvo Attano but a regular journalist trying to do espionage. You need to meet the game on its own terms, and I can totally get why this is a dealbreaker for folk. But for me it fit the tone well. This is from 2019 but set in 1987, and it might as well have been made and set today. Shockingly similar political climate around immigration, and technological involvement in who is deemed "legal". I highly recommend it if you have patience, and like stealth/spy stuff.
Wanted to stay for the potential story, but the game play mechanics and how you interact with every single object took away from the fun. Would love to see another game in this vein but more refined with the interaction mechanics. As this one goes, it's a pass.
Crashed toward end of the opening sequence. Skipped me forward past the part where I know who I'm playing and dropped me into the woman smoking on a balcony. I took a few steps forward and game crashed multiple times. No reason or error code, but just crashed. Uninstalled and reinstalled and started a new game, but it wouldn't even play the FMV opening sequence. Asking for a refund.
The first actual mission is the only really good part of this game. It is exactly one hour long. Only get this on the deepest of sales.
Too slow, too boring for me
