From the legendary creators you'd expect to actually like video games, comes a rip off Scrabbalatro I don't even think they bothered to code properly. The balance of this game is nonexistent, which is wild because somehow you're supposed to beat a level with cards that don't even combat the brutal deficits and insane boss requirements this game suddenly foists on you. Unlocking more cards changes absolutely nothing, because most of them are just garbage fodder. Did anyone even play test this? Please don't get me started on the art, it looks like Beyond AI Slop! While they don't admit to using AI on their page, it's pretty glaringly obvious they... used it for development blah blah blah... you know the exact same excuse every dirtbag studio is conjuring up these days when they get caught. I went ahead and donated three times what I spent on this slop to real developers to counter balance such a heinous atrocity. Investigating PQube after the fact and seeing how nefarious they were to other studios is the rotten cherry on top. From stealing diversity grant money meant for a studio of underrepresented developers to blatantly ripping off developers who met their milestones but never received a penny... what a UK ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It's truly Beyond Words that this was such a bad experience.
I wish I played more of the demo as while I really enjoyed the very early game, I'm starting to dislike it now after a few hours. Don't get me wrong, I love the Scrabble meets Balatro premise. But the game overall just isn't fun for me. It's mostly due to the vague UI and the (so far) fairly boring tiles and boosters. My biggest pet peve is how the game doesn't tell you the total word score (after multipliers etc) before you play it, especially because the way multipliers (and multipliers of multipliers) work is confusing. Sometimes I make a lot more points with a word and I exactly don't know why. While I am quite good at Scrabble, I'm terrible at this game and can't get gold in anything but the beginning tables. I'll keep playing to try get my moneys worth but at the moment I'm just not enjoying the experience.
Yes, with caveats. The game is very fun. However, if you start pulling out semi-obscure words, like Hedonia, bailiff, etc. the game will not recognize it. I have lost at least a few runs to this. The mechanics are a blast though, its Balatro meets scrabble in a very pleasant way. Also you're allowed to use acronyms and proper names, but the acronyms and names allowed are also very random. Something as common as IBS or NFL might not be recognized, but then what appears to be a completely random scramble will register. Its a little frustrating at times, but hopefully they expand the in game lexicon with terminology from fields like law and philosophy so that more obscure words can be used. Overall, petty concerns aside, this game is a fantastic job by the devs. This is one I'll probably boot up on and off for years for some mindless fun.
There are very few games, even of those I enjoy, that I immediately think, "Wow, I need to go tell several friends about this because of how much they'll love it." This is one. Balatro, but scrabble, and superbly well executed. Also fantastic for couch co-op mode with a partner.
I've played a whole bunch of games with a premise similar to this one (i.e., "What if Balatro but with Scrabble?") and this one is my favorite. I like that you get a different board with each challenge; it adds more depth to the game, because now you aren't just figuring out which cards have synergies and plowing your way through by exploiting those combos; you are also learning how to play each new board to your best advantage. It's also got a pleasant, colorful interface and smooth, ambient music and SFX, which I consider an important factor when choosing from a bunch of different games that are otherwise structured similarly. An all-around delight.
This is a very fun game. It's also a game that REALLY needs a bigger dictionary than it has. Sometimes it doesn't recognize some pretty basic things, let alone obscure things. It also lacks many oriental words that are fairly widely recognized in English (many of which are common enough to be in major dictionaries). This leads to it feeling somewhat random what you can and cannot score with, because it has a mix of bizarrely obscure words that I only find by putting random letters in place and then a bunch of things it doesn't take that are more common. If your lexicon is broad you may ironically find yourself frustrated in this word game because of that. It also purports to accept proper nouns, but lacks a ton of common names (especially last names) like Lopez. Regardless of those complaints, it's still a fun game and I do recommend it. I just hope they add a few more dictionaries to their list of accepted words.
Word happy. Play Fun.
Firstly.. marketing this - a WORD GAME - as "from the legendry creators of Goldeneye and Timesplitters" is like saying... "From Quentin Tarantino - director of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, comes this fantastic collection of cross-stitch patterns for your Grandmother to knit".. so they can F**k right off with that nonsense. Secondly.. I just want to play a word game.. I don't want to be blocked by some ridiculous random thing where none of my letters score anything, making the stage / boss unbeatable.. Horrible. Refunded.
I usually do more hours into a game before I give an opinion and I may edit this review later, but for me this is a solid recommend. I wanted to help promote this game as it is still early and still getting patches and updates which is AWESOME and I want to encourage that. I was never a fan of roguelites until I played Balatro. It had a very satisfying ramp in difficulty and unlocks that made it a fun romp. Many games have tried to duplicate that fun and unfortunately failed, including a ton of somewhat popular word games. (Looking at you Wordatro)... BUT this one seems to get the closest for me to the Balatro feeling, edging out my previous favorite PIP My Dice. Is it perfect? NO - It needs a better tutorial (or maybe I somehow skipped it). I don't think I still understand the color of the tiles. The balancing is getting better as more patches come in, and it is still being actively worked on which is great. I hope that some mods will come along to enhance the experience as that is what made Balatro 10000X better for me even tho it was pretty good to start. TO ALL GAME DEVS: this is the literal 1000 time I ended up buying a game ONLY because it had a demo!!! (looking at you rocket league). Given the many disappointments I have had with word based balatros, I would never have bothered without the free demo, now I own the full version. Anyway, great game if you like scrabble and Balatro: for now 8/10 but I am still early in the game so there may be some adjustments along the way, but lets see more games like this!!! PLEASE leave the game open for modders....
This game rules. Gives off early/mid 2000's PopCap game vibes, but Beyond Words requires more strategic thought than most PopCap games did (no shade on PopCap, the Peggles are all-timers). Beyond Words feels like what every previous attempt by other devs to combine Balatro style gameplay with a Scrabble-esque game has been trying to do, but this time it's been done right. As far as the AI art stuff goes-- look, I hate AI stuff. It's soulless, takes work from artists, and is stupidly wasteful in terms of energy and water consumption. The devs did use AI generated art for the demo, but the devs paid real life human artists to make the art in the final product. Everyone has different thresholds for what amount of AI trash they can tolerate-- I'm willing to give them a pass for (eventually) making things right. I'm not going to say that that's what YOU should do, because I'm not your boss (yet). If you feel like it's still too far over the line, fair enough! I do have one comment for a previous reviewer who said that we should get used to it and that AI art isn't going anywhere-- it sure seems like it went somewhere this time!
