Never have a chance to play this game before. Great game indeed and I see a lots of reference to the lotr and some from the hobbits and the Silmarillion. In the context of the lotr, the story is well written in a way that is logical and relevant. I haven't play online mode yet, but during the solo mode I have already encounter several bugs (e.g., lost rewards after save, infinite claims of reward, infinite drops of potions, etc.) that hopefully the developer could fix it. Still this doesn't turn me down from buying this great game. Looking forward to release more remastered lotr game!!
Das Spiel, war damals TOP. Und ist es noch immer. P.s Danke Aspyr für das Filmwaffen Pack. War mein Hauptkaufgrund.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 2: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

**The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition** is a surprisingly welcome return of a 2011 cult action RPG that was quietly delisted years ago. Aspyr shadow-dropped this modernized version on August 11, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch (with Switch 2 support following shortly after). It is not a full remake. It is a thoughtful port with meaningful quality-of-life improvements that make the original game far more playable in 2026. ### The Story: A Parallel War Worth Telling While Frodo and the main Fellowship head toward Mordor, a different threat rises in the North. Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean servant of Sauron, has gathered a massive army in the ruins of Fornost. You control three original heroes who form their own small fellowship: - **Eradan**, a Dúnedain Ranger focused on stealth, bows, and precise melee - **Andriel**, an Elven Loremaster who handles magic, healing, and area control - **Farin**, a Dwarven Champion built for tanking and heavy melee punishment The story stays grounded in Tolkien’s wider legendarium without feeling like a cheap cash-in. You visit familiar places (Rivendell, Lórien, Mirkwood, the Lonely Mountain) and encounter established characters (Aragorn, Gandalf, Elrond) in ways that feel natural rather than forced. The tone is darker and more brutal than the films, which fits the mature rating and the northern war setting. It is not the deepest narrative in the franchise, but it respects the source material more carefully than many licensed games of its era. ### Gameplay: Straightforward, Satisfying, and Better Than You Remember This is a co-op-first action RPG with clear character roles and solid loot/skill progression. Combat is arcade-leaning: light and heavy attacks, ranged options, dodges, blocks, and crunchy finishers with slow-motion critical moments. Skill trees and gear let you specialize each hero, and the ability to call on the Great Eagle Beleram for aerial strikes adds a nice set-piece feel. The biggest improvement in the Legacy Edition is **character hot-swapping**. You can freely switch between all three heroes on the fly instead of being locked into one for long stretches. Combined with full control over the AI companions’ gear and skills, this makes solo play far more viable and interesting than it was in 2011. The refined lock-on system and always-visible party health/mana/experience bars further reduce the original’s friction. Online co-op (up to three players) and local split-screen (two players) remain the game’s strongest mode. Fighting as a proper fellowship still feels right for a Lord of the Rings game. The core loop of clearing areas, upgrading characters, and pushing deeper into enemy territory holds up better than expected when played with friends. ### Where Age Still Shows Aspyr did not rebuild the game. Levels remain long and somewhat repetitive. Enemy variety is limited, camera work can still feel awkward in tight spaces, and the AI companions (while improved by your ability to control them) are not modern companions. Visuals receive higher resolution, better textures, and stable 60 fps support, but the underlying art and animation clearly date to 2011. Combat never becomes particularly deep; it stays satisfying rather than complex. These are the same criticisms the original received, and the Legacy Edition does not magically erase them. What it does is remove most of the technical and interface annoyances that made the 2011 version harder to revisit. ### Performance and Value On modern hardware the game runs cleanly at 60 fps (and higher on PC). The UI is clearer, autosaves exist, and controller support feels current. At a $19.99 price point (often discounted at launch), it is easy to recommend if the premise appeals to you. **Steam user reception has been Strongly Positive**, with many players treating it as a successful revival of a forgotten co-op title rather than a groundbreaking new experience. ### Verdict **War in the North – Legacy Edition** is not a modern masterpiece, but it is a respectful and functional return of a game that still has genuine charm. The hot-swap system and restored co-op make it the definitive way to play this story. If you want a relatively straightforward Middle-earth action RPG that focuses on fighting alongside a small fellowship in a parallel northern campaign, this is one of the better licensed options currently available. It shines brightest with friends. Solo is now perfectly acceptable thanks to the new systems, but the fantasy of forming your own fellowship is what the game was built for. For $20, it is an easy recommendation for Tolkien fans who never got to play the original or who want a smoother version of a game they already liked. **Recommended** — especially in co-op.
Lots of bugs, and constant need to reupload savegame files is maddening
one of THE games of all time
Good Game for what it is. For LOTR fans and older games (even though it's not terribly old), then this really is a diamond in the rough, and actual good LOTR content. Yea there is some bugs for sure, and hopefully they fix them over time. It's a nice Action hack n slash to chill out with and take in the sights of Middle Earth that is not available with other games.
Oh man I had a hella fun time with this! I honestly didn't realize this wasn't a rerelease of The Third Age on PS2 / Gamecube. Somehow my brain fused these. I was like "Elf dwarf human yeah OK" and then a little ways in I was really confused as to why there was no turn-based or Moria. I'm so glad I missed this because the slightly improved version on PC has been a great time. I beat it and I'm on my second playthrough - lots of replayability, the combat is the right mix of arcade and Souls-lite, and it actually has some great set pieces and action. I also love and hate the aggressive use of the book language in the game. It's clear that the writers read the books front-to-back a few times, or at least had consultants that did - sometimes the lines are really charming to hear, sometimes it's super on the nose (the Dragon and the evil dude doing the same speech Sauron's emissary did on Erebor was nuts). Anyway, I super dig it, and as a huge Tolkien fan, this isn't too sacrilegious. Honestly, there were some battles in the north, and they don't do anything crazy, so it's fine. 8/10 for LotR fans, 7/10 for other folks, it's a fun enough arcadey time with a few deep systems (I'm still trying to get matching sets of my favourite armours for the stat boosts)
