This game is a tough one to recommend. On the one hand you've got amazing visuals, moody atmosphere, great character designs & wonderfull ambient sounds but on the other hand there's sluggish controls, bad pacing, shallow gameplay and genuinely lacking story pay-off. The guidance on where to go in this open world is pretty lacking so there's lots of wandering about, this combined with the sloggish & slow gameplay makes many parts of the game feel like you're wasting time. Even waiting for platforms to move over, or an enemy to pass by takes so long that you get bored of it rather quickly. Luckily fast travel is super convient but going back and forth by the same places so often gets tiring. Near the end of the game there's also many plain frustrating parts, that require precise jumping or timing. There's not enough meat on the bones of this game to offer a substantial amount of value for your buck/time. It's an allround mixed bag that i wouldn't recommend to anyone at full price. On a steep discount (half off or more) you can consider it but other than the great looks and world they designed there's not much to be experienced in this game. There is however good setup for a sequel, that if it improves upon the faults of this one, could be pretty good.
When I rate games, I mostly look at two aspects. After sections of the game, I either go "that was fun" or "thank god that part is over". The problem with this game is that there are too many sections of "thank god that is over". There is just too much frustration with some of the platforming. The sewer chase scenes are ridiculously hard with extremely narrow margins of error. The strange jump mechanic where you end up hanging on ledges more often than actually making jumps is an odd choice. Then forced having to play flappy [strike]bird[/strike] drone in order to continue the game almost ruined the entire game for me. The added bonus of a cliffhanger ending leaves one totally unsatisfied. The game feels like a senior project. It appears this is the developers first outing and it shows. The best part of the game is the graphic style. The music and effects are also quite good. The story is hit or miss. Way too much "cheeky" binary text shows the mentality of the developer. The inventory system and UI is fine. The map could be more detailed. The fast travel points could be better implemented with the choice of choosing which exact point you could travel to and not just the last one you activated in the area. If they polish up the platforming and get rid of the mandatory flappy drone mini-game, then I would recommend the game.
I was generally disappointed in this stealth platformer. I thought I'd give it a chance, but there are far too many things that ruin the experience for me. First on the good side, art direction, scenes etc. are amazing. I really was digging the style. However the animations feel stiff and even choppy at times (it seems more sprites/frames would have helped smooth things out but I get it's not the best investment for a dev). Unfortunately that's it for the good. The gameplay is absolutely boring and repetitive. Just endless walking/crouching. The sneaking sections all feel one-dimensional, no thinking involved. It's a matter of just timing your crouching and hiding. There is no challenge beyond execution. There is also no feedback whatsoever as to when the guards can see you. It's even inconsistent. Sometimes they will notice me as soon as I pop out of hiding behind their backs, other times it doesn't matter. Platforming isn't any better. The controls will happily eat your jump input which will cause you to drop to your death instead of jumping towards a ledge. Even the ledge grabs don't work consistently. The controls for climbing up and down are use/cancel button (it seems a nitpick but it is infuriating and counter-intuitive). You can't slide up and down ladders. You can't grab them mid jump. It's like jump was added as an after-thought to this platformer. But it gets worse. In just first two major areas I encountered at least half a dozen areas where the camera would not let me see where I'm jumping below. So I tried to just slide off the edge. Oh... Instant death. But there is nowhere else to proceed. Okay. I guess I will jump. Ah there is a platform. But you couldn't see it until dying first. Ridiculous. There is fast travel (when you unlock it) but navigating the areas seems tedious at best. Technically, there is a "map" but it's just for the world overview. You don't know which direction you are supposed to go, everything depends on you mentally remembering where things/people are. This means if you put this game down and come back to it, unless you wrote it all down you might as well start over. There is a quest tracker but it doesn't tell you where things are. It feels very cheap. The story is ok, at least what little I saw from it. The dystopian cyberpunk is forced a bit too much. The way the androids/robots talk is more random characters numbers than actual words, which made me chuckle at first but got real old real fast. But then, to be cool I guess, they throw in some curse words to spice up android speak. Delightful. /s Ultimately I stopped playing because it wasn't fun. If anything it felt like a slog fest. I think this could have been a much better game with better designed more in depth stealth sections, more natural and better performing controls and more narrative driven focus. See *gestures widely at so many others* 2/10
I'm really liking the game, the art is beautiful and the story is gripping. Perhaps the gameplay leaves a little to be desired, I expected better, it is difficult to grab the margins for example or use a button to raise / lower the stairs is something rare for me. The fact that it is translated into a lot of languages also makes it very special. Gràcies pel català! :) A niche game, but recommended to everyone who wants to experience those point-and-click adventure games sensations together with prince of persia, flashback that made us so crazy in the 90s. And works like a charm with Proton 8.0 in Linux Mint 21.1 :D I haven't finished it yet, but I'm waiting for the second part :))))
Can´t deny this people know what they want. This game is a jewel between rocks, a small piece of love dedicated to the game´s industry. This game is different: I´ve been playing for about 34 years, so I´ve played a lot of games, from "indie" to AAA, and I can say this one is over the top of the indie game piramid. It has a very good narrative, storytelling, the art is outstanding and unique, and the gameplay and mechanics smooth. If you are looking for a shooter, a metal gear solid clone, metroidvania, etc. DONT buy this game, we have a lot of games like those... but on the other hand, if you are looking for a different experience, deep storytelling, and a lot of secrets and lore to discover, this one is for you. You can spend hours on the story and platforming, even training patience (seems so difficult this days with so many overestimulated games) to avoid guards in different styles, just to continue discovering things. I think It´s difficult today to create an ententaining game without the mechanic of killing enemies. This one achieves this goal with a deep storytelling, item inventory, a very well performed music and a refreshing visual style. This combo is what makes The Library of Babel a very very good game. I´ll finish this YES with the "old" feeling of exploration that this game is giving to me. Very different from modern games full of action, hundred of jumps, wallrunning, "parkour", and a lot of stuff we are totally used to see. Long time since I was playing a game and thinking: "well, interesting... lets figure how to get this done...", and this game is giving that to me. Well done guys!
The Library of Babel özünde bir platform-bulmaca oyunu. Diğer incelemer oyunu Another World ve Flashback ile kıyaslamış. Not: 6/10 Bu oyunu sevdiyseniz şunları da deneyebilirsiniz: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, Flashback
Mi ukończenie gry, odkrycie 97% mapy i rzeczy, zajęło 13 godzin. Warto.
This is a fun, challenging platformer. The art was great and I'd love it if there was a sequel.
While the visuals and story building are interesting, the stealth portions of the game are just...boring and repetitive. Crawl here, hide, wait, sneak past. Push a button to proceed through the previously closed door. Repeat ad nauseam. It sucks because the trailer for this looked really cool and the visuals are absolutely spot on and the characters interesting. But for a stealth platformer the stealth is boring and the platforming fairly typical.
