Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history.

Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1.43/day in the week to Sep 3 → 0.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,420 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Before you buy, know what you're getting. It looks and plays like a game from 2004 which is exactly what it is. This is more like 25 hours of visual novel with 10 hours of grindy RPG sprinkled through it. Several story threads are begun, a dozen important characters are introduced, and politics of multiple nations are explained. Just when the game reaches it most intriguing, it twists, turns, and ends. You're left with few answers, more questions, and multiple cliffhangers. None of those points are negative. It's the beginning of a massive JRPG series with multiple story arcs. After bouncing off this game 2-3 times I forced myself to play through it because I had to know why it was such a loved series. My experience was 3 hours of intrigue, 25 hours of near boredom that almost made me give up the game forever, followed by 5 hours that left me with my mouth hanging open and an intense desire to play SC. If you're not into the 2004 vibe I suggest starting with another story arc or waiting until SC gets a remake to start playing Trails in the Sky.

Good Game!
Fun chill JRPG. Very slow paced and tropey, yet comfy and with a lot of heart. Feels like a 90s Saturday morning cartoon in ways. The story picks up near the end with a series of twists but as many reviews point out, it’s really like an extended prologue for a larger story. The quality of writing is okay but a bit fluffy. The character moments are a highlight more so than the plot and the growth of the heroes is done in a very believable way. The turn based combat is solid but somewhat unbalanced and not the highlight of the experience. All in all good for some chill escapism and immersion in an anime fantasy world but not recommended if you want high octane combat or world shattering stakes. It’s a nice series to play for an hour or two at a time when you don’t want to fully engage your brain.
I only have 3 hours in it right now, but... I understand. This is something special.
this happened to my buddy andrew once
I've always been vaguely aware of the Trails series, but it wasn't until the recent remake of this game that I really started to play them. I enjoyed the demo for the remake so much that I bought this game right away to experience the original. While it requires a lot of patience to get through and takes a while to get going, Trails in the Sky is one of the best JRPGs I've played. The detail and worldbuilding present in the story is unlike anything I've seen before, and is the easy highlight of the game. While the story starts out very slow, I found it very engaging due to how much the world is fleshed out. My only complaint about the story is that the game has no voice acting by default - make sure to get one of the voiceover mods for it. I was surprised by how enjoyable and complex the combat was. While it seems simple at first, it has deep levels of customization and strategy to engage with. The combat stands head and shoulders above practically every other JRPG I can think of. While I think that the story is the main highlight, the unique combat is reason enough to play the game. The only caveat I have is that the final dungeon and boss sequence really affect the pacing of the final chapter. While it was really frustrating to go through these on the highest difficulty, I still enjoyed the sequence overall. Additionally, since it's a native PC game, it has tons of nice QoL stuff thats missing from the vast majority of JRPGs made in the last decade+ that are all mostly designed for consoles. To name a few: native ultrawide support, 1000 save slots, heavily detailed menus showing everything you may need to know, full KBM support, and options to use only the keyboard or only the mouse. While the slow start may be off putting for some, I'd strongly recommend checking the game out. It's quickly become one of my favorite games of all time. 10/10
Peak in the Sky. I bought this knowing absolutely nothing about it, turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time and I already bought the entire series. The retro visuals, the combat, the music, the plot and characters...absolutely brilliant in everything
