Developed and published by Plot Twist, The Last Case of Benedict Fox: Definitive Edition delivers a distinctive fusion of Metroidvania exploration, detective storytelling, and psychological horror wrapped in a world inspired by cosmic terror and occult mysteries. Rather than focusing solely on combat or platforming, the game builds its identity around uncovering hidden truths through investigation, exploration, and supernatural abilities. The Definitive Edition represents a substantial refinement of the original release, introducing upgraded combat mechanics, smoother traversal, expanded puzzles, improved enemy behavior, and numerous quality-of-life enhancements that create a more polished and satisfying experience. The story follows Benedict Fox, a detective linked to a mysterious demonic companion who grants him the extraordinary ability to enter Limbo, a surreal dimension formed from the memories of the recently deceased. What begins as the investigation of a brutal family tragedy quickly unfolds into a larger conspiracy involving secret organizations, forbidden rituals, and unimaginable horrors. The narrative steadily reveals its mysteries through environmental storytelling, collectible lore, conversations, and carefully paced discoveries rather than relying on lengthy exposition. Players who enjoy unraveling complex plots will appreciate how every new revelation adds another layer to an already fascinating mystery. Exploration serves as the backbone of the experience. The interconnected environments constantly reward curiosity, encouraging players to revisit earlier locations after acquiring new abilities that unlock previously inaccessible paths. Every hidden room, secret passage, and optional area contributes to the game's rich atmosphere while offering useful upgrades, additional lore, or valuable collectibles. The mansion that serves as Benedict's headquarters gradually transforms into an intricate puzzle itself, with each newly uncovered secret deepening both the story and the sense of immersion. Combat has received one of the largest improvements in the Definitive Edition. Encounters feel considerably smoother thanks to faster animations, more responsive controls, and enemies that react more intelligently during battles. Benedict combines melee attacks, supernatural powers, evasive maneuvers, and carefully timed counterattacks to overcome a wide variety of grotesque creatures inhabiting Limbo. The challenge remains demanding throughout much of the adventure, but the revised mechanics make success feel far more rewarding by emphasizing player skill and strategic decision-making rather than simple endurance. Puzzle-solving is another major strength that separates the game from many other entries in the genre. Instead of relying on repetitive switch mechanisms or straightforward environmental obstacles, the puzzles frequently require observation, logical thinking, and interpretation of clues scattered throughout the world. The Definitive Edition expands these sections with additional puzzles and refinements that improve pacing while making the investigative elements feel more authentic. Solving these mysteries contributes directly to the overall narrative, reinforcing the feeling that every discovery matters. Visually, the game excels with an impressive artistic direction that combines gothic architecture, haunting dreamscapes, decaying mansions, and surreal manifestations of human memories. Limbo constantly shifts between beauty and horror, creating environments that are both unsettling and captivating. Detailed lighting, atmospheric effects, and imaginative creature designs reinforce the oppressive mood without overwhelming the player. The enhanced visuals introduced in the Definitive Edition further improve environmental detail, making each location even more immersive and memorable. The audio design complements the presentation exceptionally well. A haunting musical score blends orchestral arrangements with eerie ambient sounds that continuously reinforce the game's dark atmosphere. Sound effects heighten moments of suspense, while strong voice performances give emotional weight to the characters and help bring the complex narrative to life. Together, the music and sound design create a consistently tense experience that supports both exploration and storytelling. The game's greatest achievement lies in how naturally it combines multiple genres into a cohesive whole. Detective work, platforming, combat, puzzle-solving, and narrative progression never feel disconnected. Instead, every gameplay system serves the larger mystery, allowing players to feel like genuine investigators navigating both physical locations and fractured memories in search of hidden truths. This unique blend gives The Last Case of Benedict Fox a personality that distinguishes it from more traditional Metroidvania adventures. Its ambitious design does come with a few challenges. The nonlinear structure can occasionally make navigation confusing, particularly when revisiting older areas in search of newly opened routes. Some boss encounters demand patience and repeated attempts before their attack patterns become manageable, while the cryptic storytelling may not appeal to players seeking a more direct narrative. However, those willing to embrace experimentation and careful exploration will likely find these aspects rewarding rather than frustrating. The Last Case of Benedict Fox: Definitive Edition stands as a much stronger and more complete version of an already imaginative concept. Plot Twist has successfully refined nearly every aspect of the original game, resulting in a memorable supernatural adventure that blends investigation, horror, exploration, and action into a compelling experience. Its atmospheric world, intriguing mystery, rewarding exploration, and meaningful gameplay improvements make it a standout title for players who appreciate narrative-driven Metroidvanias with a darker, more psychological tone.
I don't recall ever having to pull my notebook out and make notes while playing a game but boy I enjoyed myself :) Last case of Benedict Fox is a decent Metroidvania with very intelligent puzzles that can take you some time to figure out, but the progression feels good in general and the Art style is really top notch. The only thing that feels mid is combat but in general its very easy. I recommend this one :)
A lore-rich game with beautiful graphics and interesting puzzles. I played on relaxed combat mode with immortality enabled because I found the combat somewhat unwieldy, and I think the only downside of playing this way was it made most of the boss battles somewhat trivial, as well as made many of the combat-focused items + item upgrades fairly useless. Otherwise, it was nice because it let me focus on exploring the maps and solving puzzles without worrying about dying (especially because enemies respawn).
For Steam Deck users I liked this game a lot but all the time I had FPS problem. And on chase sequences it was awful but doable. Tomas's third phase with FPS 11 or even 9 is impossible. So sad. I was going for perfect
100% borzadáj. + A grafika jó + Az animációk dettó + A zene-hangok szintén - A játék viszont értékelhetetlen zagyva lepratelep. 0/10 Not recommended
Bugged sequence on PC for rescuing the lady from the mirrors (would need a 1000 left-click per second emulator to proceed with the game). Me and my buddies each tried... then we tried with 2 or 3 persons just mashing the mouse like crazy! We tried other mouses to no avail. Dropping the game because of this, what a shame! Although it did end up causing a comical "Office Space"-ish scene lol this game looked very promising to be honest.
Clunky, bugged and not optimized
