About

Sunken Engine is a ship repair simulation game with a distinctive Lovecraftian atmosphere. After your father’s untimely death, you must keep the business you inherited alive. This means not only repairing ships but also keeping customers satisfied, maintaining the town’s order, and uncovering the mysteries your father left behind. Yet every new ship brings new challenges and ominous secrets.

The supernatural events you face during daily work will threaten your sanity. Losing your mental balance not only makes your job harder but may also attract the attention of dark entities. To survive, you must find ways to protect your mind, continue your work, and keep your wits if you wish to discover your father’s true legacy.

Repairing is not the only way to sustain your business. You can sell valuable loot recovered from the sea at the stall behind your shop. The economy is difficult for everyone in town; you must care for your family while keeping the business alive. Sometimes, this means stepping beyond conventional ways to earn profit.

Your town is located in the middle of a busy sea route. Ships of various sizes and types dock for repairs, and it is your duty to meet the captains’ needs. Fixing damages is vital not just for your business but for the safety of the entire region. Yet some repairs may require more than just your tools…

You can renovate and improve your shop as you wish. By customizing your tools, workspace, and decorations, you can impress customers and bring to life the workshop your father once dreamed of.

As you progress, you’ll learn to repair more ships and, with new licenses, take on more complex work. Each license opens the door to new types of ships and new challenges. But remember: not every ship is just a repair job—some bring with them dark stories and sinister secrets. Be cautious…

I foolishly thought this was exactly the same as the fantastic demo but encountered true horror to find it had gone from a good demo to a bad game. The demo starts off with big to medium sized boats that are fun to clean and here you are cleaning small canoes. I do not want to grind canoes until I can clean the actual good boats. The day timer is way too short too. The 1, 2, 3, tool buttons have been replaced with a weapon wheel instead of having both options for some unknown reason. Then there's the AI sameface characters that were not in the demo but are here now. I don't mind AI as a placeholder or as a limited research tool however this is early access which means the game is out already. Not to mention the sameface characters are very ugly and ruin the horror of the game when it looks like you are talking to the same guy over and over again. The dev also tried to do an "artist montage" to prove the characters are not ai however the montage is essentially putting layers on top of each other. I have seen a lot of artist montages that have the artists drawing every line sped up until the whole character is complete and this is not that. I don't know why he can't just put back the old 3D models from the demo but he probably won't because he Joseph Stalined an entire pinned thread about the AI art so I don't have much faith for the development of this game. There are also menu glitches and screen tearing and no way to lower graphics without changing resolution
Sunken Engine operates in this delightful space between a job simulator and a horror game. Your main job is to operate a shipyard, cleaning and repairing ships for cash and experience/skill points. You then spend that cash and skill points to expand the range and difficulty of servicing operations you can perform, the quality of the tools you use, and the materials required to fully mend every vessel you can. Some of the things you collect, namely shells and starfish, can be sold at your market, along with any fish you catch from fishing. Over time, the economy starts to grow as wealthier customers offer greater gain, and larger or more urgent jobs offer even more. Underpinning this already satisfying gameplay loop, is a sinister Lovecraftian tale of horror, betrayal, and meddling with unknown powers. Figures begin appearing out of the corner of your eyes. Glowing red eyes stare at you from the tops of buildings. Your heart beats faster and your skin begins to crawl. Strangers knock on your door, hinting at mysteries beyond the veil. Strange fish begin appearing on your hook. By this point, you're already in too deep. They have found you. They are watching you. As an Early Access title, I reserve final judgement for the full release, but so far there is a lot to discuss about this game (SPOILERS AHEAD). For an indie title, this game shows a lot of completion. There's plenty to do, plenty to work towards, and most progress feels satisfying. The horror feels well-integrated, and when things really start to get creepy, they deliver. During the day, parts of the town are open to explore, while at night, things begin to change. Occasionally, the circus comes to town, offering yet another unsettling venue and gameplay loop. Some nights you'll even be visited by haunted ships that hide dark secrets. The art is very pleasant, albeit overly cartoonish at times. I found myself gripped by this game, losing large blocks of time making progress towards the current end of build. I have enjoyed the time spent, and I believe a wide array of people would enjoy this game. I can tell that there is a tremendous amount of inspiration from Dredge, but it feels more of an homage in the service of familiarizing players, rather than outright theft, and comparing the two is a tad reductive. Naturally, however, I have some complaints. As I mentioned before, there is an overly cartoonish quality at times, that detracts from the general feel. The NPCs are all 2D drawings with lots of detail, but the shadow figures are 3D and very geometric. Those two clash at times and detract a little from the horror element. I also feel like the horror part is a little too forgiving? While I appreciate the ability to regain sanity easily, and that true horror comes from the unexpected and random, I feel like some of the sanity-breaking events and creature interactions were minor or infrequent enough to not really count sanity as a well-managed resource. This is most prominent when you get to the ghost liner. It is marketed as a horror venue where you're stalked by an unseen monster - wherein I never encountered a single scare. I'm not sure if it was because I managed sanity well with the pipe, or if I was never able to spend a LONG enough time on the ship because the Blue Prince-style room generation locked me out constantly. I also struggled with the material economy at times, because repairing deckboards never seemed to cost the same twice. I would run out of either wood or nails randomly, despite having purchased amounts I would've imagined were satisfactory. Lastly, I struggled with the haunted ships that come in certain nights. Supposedly, there are 4 types of artefact to be obtained from them, although I only ever got the same 3 over and over again. Maybe it's not integrated yet, but my completionist mind says - if you're going to show it's possible, it better be possible. Overall I think this is a really impressive title, worthy of the time and money I have invested so far. I am extremely eager for the next installment. I encourage anyone who has read this far to give it a try!
really cool game which need low system requirements to run recommened to buy
Too much bug to recommand this game ATM (update 7.0), not even a minute in I had an overlapping text in the option menu, lauching the game and same problem with UI overlapping, taking my first contract I stopped cause the game does not register the things I aim at properly so I couldn't even wash the floor of a dinghy, not mentionning the clams levitating on it.... Could be fun but all those bugs make it infuriating to play, please fix this before adding any content for the love of the depth gods.
In it's current state, no I can't recommend this game. Since it is Early Access I do plan to change/update my review on full release (whenever that is). The moment I opened the game for the first time and tried changing some settings to better fit me some parts of the UI broke and began overlaying in the wrong places. The game has potential and a fun loop, I do hope the dev(s) can clean up a lot of the stuff the community is bringing up.
I really like this game, but selling stuff at the market doesn't make sense. i really want an in depth tutorial. the renovation table, where is it how do i use it. this game has a chance but for the life of me i feel like a lot of stuff isn't explained.
Decent Game, would give it a 3 out o 5 stars. Its not THE game or gem of all time, but its defo decent. Listed a quick Positives, Negatives and Ideas to improve the game at the bottom of the review. Id say its a pretty good game but needs to improve a bunch before I would play it again. Especially content wise for the World the game is lacking. You talk once to NPC's and thats it, no new dialogue no matter what happens, there also is no small talk or any further mechanics with them, three lines of dialogue and thats it. The Carnival games are fun, but only two exist that you beat first try in the same night buy empty the shelves and now you have nothing to do anymore. From now on, you start grinding and take a break by spending money on cosmetics for your shop. The Gameplay loop is fun, but when the Grind starts it becomes old pretty quick. There is not really anything to do, you can "upgrade" your shop and get new licenses, but they barely change visuals, the cosmetics are lacking a little too, You basically just grind away, since most of the Objectives are to buy a new license anyway, there is nothing to do except grind grind and grind. Id say the Game would be more then just decent if the Visuals would change not just a tiny bit but you can actually see a significant difference with new licenses and upgrades, Same for improving the interactions with the world, most places are quite empty from a players perspective. You see the same few ships every day and the same few people everyday. So bringing in a variety factor would be a big plus as well. Positives: - Art - Lore - Fun Gameplay loop until you start grinding. - Music is pretty nice and fitting Negatives: - Grind heavy gameplay - No Life sim mechanics - Limited interactions with the world that you can go through in the same night. - Empty locations - Few Ship- and NPC models. Ideas: - More ship and NPC models to give variety. You see massive ships going by, there is no way not one of them needs some repairs, and even small islands have communities reaching from a 100 to a few thousand people. And seeing the SAME cursed ship everytime is getting old too, I have the same crown five times now, it feels like Excalibur, so many copies that everyone has one now. - new shops and NPC's in the World - New lines of dialogue for NPC's and ways to interact with them. - Way to interact with the Community, a small island is BOUND to be a tight Crew. So Interacting with the Community would make the world more lively and break the grindiness of the Current Game stage. - New locations for Manors of the Noble families, maybe visiting the burned down Casino. - Giving old locations mechanics, instead of selling lighters, flasks and teapots you very obviously stole right in your "shop" corner, bring it to a person dealing in stolen goods, and lockpicks that appears at the market at night. Or being able to gather mushrooms and other things around the forest. - Contracts, for example: Contracts from the nobles to sabotage ships of rivaling companies, Contracts from the blackmarket to steal certain objects from ships. - Monthly/Daily costs, like Rent, electricity, Wages etc. - Needing to get fuel for Welder. - Different locations to take a dive at, you cant tell me someone suspicious never tossed anything in the sea close to the forest, or a cultist lost something close to the Castle ruins. - Employees for Bazaar and cracking oysters or fishing - A way to control music or even play your own music (via a folder) - More Events, like a day in the month in which Cult activities reach an all time high and you can interact with the Yellow robbed people, for example buy artifacts. Having the Community (the islanders) host small events, like market days, sacrifices to some mysterious power, and so on. - Having the carnival actually open more Games over time instead of the same two Games, like a wheel of fortune and other Games you usually see at the carnival, maybe asking the clown to tell you a joke and having more people appear at the Carnival in the first place, considering this is the "biggest" event at the moment, it seems very dead for that. - New Sanity events, at this point I am not scared or suprised by the same tall black figure showing up, and after having a talk with him at the door too, I dont think the Protagonist is scared of him anymore either.
