Reviews
This game really should be called The Killing Cliche. The Killing Antidote (TKA) is the most “designed by a committee” game I have played. Every trope has been rolled out. Here is a small checklist for convenience. Eye candy main character [check] Unlockable outfits for main character [check] Main character is a master of military firearms with no previous military training [check] Zombies [check] Mad scientist [check] Virus outbreak [check] Secret lab [check] Greedy overbearing company trying to cut corners [check] Large invincible creature chasing you [check] Lose all your weapons [check] Lose all your weapons again [check] Mysterious main character ability [check] Obscure puzzles [check] There are plenty others but they get a pass due to the location or the nature of games. For example, back tracking and doors that can’t be opened despite having enough firepower to level the facility. I am not joking about the puzzles. Go ahead and Google how to obtain the submachine gun and believe that anyone organically figured that out. What would have been proper is a gift sitting on the counter top. It is what Scooby would call a clue. Despite TKA being adjacent to Resident Evil, TKA is not a survival game. It is a third person shooter/adventure game. The player has access to near unlimited resources to be a survival game. Also, if anyone has played more than one video game, everything is expected and not scary. Again, it’s a rather cookie cutter game. The only intense moments are not what would be considered naturally occurring. Basically, the player will get attacked by a zombie horde at set events and times. They suddenly just show up and break through walls and doors. Zombies will come in from areas that make no sense on how they even got there. Seriously, there will be many moments of, “Where the $^@# did that come from?” Although TKA does not provide the same experience as a Resident Evil game does not mean TKA is not entertaining. The gun play is tight and satisfying. The zombies react to being hit as one would expect if zombies were real. Head shots are the go to as they should be. There are plenty of melee weapons as well and they are equally enjoyable to use. Every weapon hit provides a gratifying reaction and kill. The shotgun in particular is really fun to use. Just the sound alone of shooting zombies with it is awesome. As mentioned before, the main game is a rather basic romp through a secret facility where an accident unleashes a mutation virus turning people into zombies and other nasty unnatural creatures. Every element is straight forward and linear. Locate the keycard, turn a crank, push a button, and flip a switch to progress. Beyond the game main game there are also challenge missions which are tailored made areas each with their own goals and, well challenges. The challenge missions are another way to unlock outfits outside of the main game. [h3]TKA is just a dress up game or other such nonsense.[/h3] Just because TKA has plenty of outfits for the main character does not make the game shallow or a one trick pony. The main game mechanics can stand on their own merits without all the clothing or eye candy. If one were to be of the mind that flaunting a female main character and unlocking outfits is the main purpose of the game, then Resident Evil (RE) would fall under the same narrow thinking. I can’t be the only one that played RE5. Remember Sheva and her outfits? Many of RE’s rank challenges are for unlocking outfits for the main characters. I may be wrong, but I am willing to put real money down that the bunny and waitress outfit are paying homage to RE Outbreak: File 2. There may be more, but those are the ones I can recall from the top of my head. [h3]Should I play The Killing Antidote?[/h3] That’s the reason you are reading reviews, is it not? Obviously I recommend the game. However, if outfits and adult themes were removed from the game, TKA would be equally enjoyable. All the fluff is just icing on a well made cake. The only reason one might not invest in playing TKA now is that the game is not finished. Even with that in mind, the current content is substantial. Including a new game plus which unlocks new areas and challenge rooms.
