About
On Sunday the 7th of March, 1936, a group of locals made their way up the long, muddy track to Galley House. As far as any of them knew, the house had stood empty for decades.
Inside, they discovered the bloody aftermath of something horrific.
The authorities were summoned, and the crime scene was eventually cleared away. But nobody ever figured out what happened that dreadful night. It seemed likely that no one ever would.
Now, many years later, you have access to a peculiar machine — one that lets you listen in on echoes of the past. Can you piece together the events behind The Incident at Galley House?

Its almost as competent a mystery game as Obra Dinn, which is about the highest praise I could give. Music, voice acting, story, and art are all really well done; the UI is also tactile and fun to use, which is important since youre gonna be clicking the same buttons a lot. If I had to give one critique itd be that some of scenes start to feel like busy work/inconsequential in the middle of the game, but its not a long game in general.

Context: I really liked Roottrees, and I understood that this game was made by different people, and the Roottrees devs just made it 3D, but I have a lot of issues with the game, independent of any previous works. At the end of the day, the game is fine and I got my money's worth, so I recommend it. Spoiler warning I really enjoyed the first half of the game; the mystery hooked me and I got attached to the VERY well written characters. Every character had their own personalities and quirks, and I became attached to them.
But then after you solved the mainline (kinda) you get introduced to the team your playable character came with to investigate the mystery. Admittedly, it was sick as ♥♥♥♥ to see your memories being toyed with, however, I didn't care about my team. Not only did they make horrible decisions throughout their time, they were boring and annoying. While the mainline had characters like "Martha, the strong matriarch keeping it together for the family" and "John, the seemingly meek, but steadfast piano salesman", the present had "Pippa, the cocky, mean nerd" and "Meg, the literal psycho". It seemed like the devs ran out of steam near the end, and I was completely zoned out for it.
Did this ruin the game for me? Absolutely not! But this left a really bad taste in my mouth:
the shallowness of it all. The whole game is just "watch the cutscene, read the transcript, put in the code, and watch the next cutscene. It was fun to make connections, and the feeling I got when the screen did the wavy little flashback effect was PRIMO, looking back, the satisfaction didn't last, primarily because you weren't working towards solving a mystery per se, but to just get the narrative. What caused the whole thing? Memory ghosts, pocket watches, and film? nah.
There's a mechanic when you put a face to the name, which I thought matching all of them correctly would reward me in some sort of achievement or something, but in reality,
you just had to match 7 of the almost 20 for the last cutscene.
Idk, maybe I'm trippin, but at the end of the day, I didn't HATE the game, I just thought it was at worst mid, and at best interesting. 5.5/10
I really enjoyed this "Obra Dinn"-esque genre of puzzle games, and this one is an absolute delight throughout! I really love how I slowly realized what's going on, figured out some tidbits but never the full picture while it slowly unveiled itself. And all this time I felt the urge to know more - I had to keep going.
Excellent puzzle game. Loved it to the end.
One of the few games I’ve gotten 100% of the achievements in—though, admittedly, I did have to look one up, as the game doesn’t require it to progress or finish. It reminds me a lot of "Unheard: Voices of Crime", but I absolutely HATED that game (apologies to anyone who felt otherwise) and found it to be a chore to finish. So, discovering that this game was similar in nature, I really thought I had bought another dud. Thankfully, I was very wrong—I actually really enjoyed "The Incident at Galley House". The singular setting tying everything together gave the branching storyline much more cohesion, whereas Voices of Crime felt like a disjointed mess that only served to frustrate me. The timeline makes sense, and the notebook and bookmarks are great tools for keeping track of everything, especially if you take breaks between play sessions. I was able to really enjoy the narrative and required minimal assistance as I progressed—which is a big plus for me. I really hate when I have to cave and look something up for mystery games! Overall, the only thing that could make this better is if it were more animated. Heck, I would totally watch this if it became a movie! Thanks for the adventure, Devs—I'm definitely going to have to check out "The Roottrees are Dead" next. Cheers to a good time!~
