Initially couldn't progress past great wastelands. Demo worked fine, but then got stuck as soon as I tried the purchased version. After some trial/error and looking at the walkthrough I was able to get going again. Recommend yes for $10. Dev is responsive and I'm looking forward to the more polished version.
The last time I played a new real-time strategy game… well, yesterday actually. But before that, it had been at least ten years. Anyway – I gave The Hive a try. It’s not a bad game. Imagine taking the style and atmosphere of WarCraft 3 (plus the light RPG elements), then making the playable race almost a 100% copy of the Zerg, and you’ve got The Hive. Unfortunately, there’s no multiplayer or skirmish mode – only a PvE campaign. Still, it’s fairly well put together, with a story and some mission variety. If only the units weren’t complete one-to-one copies of the damn Zerg. Right now the game is just €5 on Steam, and at that price it’s a steal. But once the offer’s gone, the price jumps to €20 – which is way too much for a game that, at best… is just “okay.” Video: https://youtu.be/IlYGNb95uYI
I hate to give this game a bad review because it is charmingly weird. Yes it's jank but it's engaging jank. My biggest problem with the game is how zoomed in the camera is even when it's zoomed out as far as it can go. It makes the game feel claustrophobic and not in a good way. It also makes selecting units from another location a slog. Yes you can click on the minimap, but I prefer to quickly move the camera to where the units are and the system they have in place just does not make that efficient. If the camera as I described it does not bother you there is a fun game to be found here. It's an indie game for sure. Don't expect anything mind blowing but it does play well and I can't fault it for not being original. Weird, but original. I hope they fix the camera, I really do.
[strike]hey, chinese come on my baby. [/strike] Ach need chinese too.
How to explain this. I like the game, it was a fun experience. Is it good? Kinda, its a very close 6/10 when it comes to the game itself. The story was complete garbage, with an advisor that I felt they missed the mark with, at the end. I would have loved a twist that would explain why he knows everything. But they went the safe route with an endgame boss that left so much more to give. The RPG aspect of the game was really not good. Sure your units can level up, but its only for the map, which makes it just useless overall sure they get stronger, but the next map they still goes back to 1 when you craft them again. (Hero units should have exp/lvl carried over. Then we come to the equipments. No point in them after 5 maps, I dissolved everything for DNA just to increase my overall stats for every unit instead of just making 1 or 7 units stronger. The idea is great, but I felt it should have been that instead of upgrading your units with buildings, you upgrade the whole DNA strand with equipments. For example take the Light infantries, you want to give them more health? Give them armor and everyone gets more. And instead of having like 6 gears for each unit, you could have made that you can have 3 (and 6 types could still be there) But you could equip any 3 (not of the same type) and buff the corresponding unit. This would give the “rpg” a more feeling of you actually making the army as what the game kinda tried to imply. There is no real stratergy, in the game either. You can micro which I don’t really mind. The medics do heal, but the amount is just not close to what the enemies do in later maps. Just build Wasps and or Hunters, kinda the only thing you need Best way is just to go around with a worker, and building hives (hives gives an AOE heal to everything and also replenish unit that dies) Which makes Medics useless. This too could have been an awesome thing in the equipment, having that you could get the medics to have a chain heal etc. But alas, there is not. I do like the overall gameplay, it was fun. There is a lot of bugs in the game but im so used to them that they don’t even bother me anymore. (I get them in every game I play, and a lot of them) For example building more then 2 burrows (unit cap increase) might bug the cap counter and lock you out from getting any more at all. Which could be fixed by reloading the save or just restarting which sucks. But after I noticed it I only built 1 building at a time and not 3-9 that I often do in RTS The thing that made me by the game was that It gave me Impossible Creature vibes with the “Harvest DNA from defeated enemies to unlock new units, abilities and stratergies.” This however is just the games item dissolve feature. Its a shame, but what to do. I know its a lot of negative things, but the game itself was fun, its just a shame that the achivements didn’t work for me, Not a single one. And I might comeback to the game when they work, to finish it on the hardest one. Overall it was a fun experience with so much potential that shows, but the devs really not having a real way to go, instead it felt they have just added things because they like them in other games, but not really wondering how it all shall work together.
I am mostly frustrated, however I want to support indie RTS as it is now not so popular genre to make and play. I still have some fun So to start from negative things Lack of information: player really needs a notification that resource pile is depleted, building completed and button to select idle workers, that is just basic QoL features. Also might also create some yielding structures to gather resources at slower pace, but infinitely I can't tell whether water is obstacle or path. It looks similar, but I have no clear idea whether I can go there or expect something from there Why there is a flying unit which technically does not fly Some better tutorial would be nice, but I kinda enjoyed figuring things on my own Please draw Queen aura radius Early pick and click tasks pissed me off, as some objects blend to much and I've spend to much time finding pixel on the half of the map, really?.. Mixed feelings about army: I expected some more passive skills or bonuses as game progresses, but it is mostly just 3 tiers of attack and def. And army feels very disbalanced, basic striking unit is the best, they Zerg rush everything with queen buff without any problem (playing on hard). I wish to see some more interesting bonuses, not just stats buffing, like CnC has: 1 lvl - increased rate of fire, 2 - autoheal, 3 - increased damage (with some unique bonuses for special units). Why not give +1 unit to pack on level 3 or 5? Or more abilities for Queen as you level up her, there is even no cd reduction. Units have weak identity, i often confuse Queen for Rhino and workers blend in, but binding solves it Plot is quite straigh-forward, so nothing bad or good about it I liked that RTS finally has tech tree for campaign, that you don't need to re-discover everything Very good fast pace of missions, everything builds quickly and worker summon is excellent idea to fix late game logistics problems Interesting inventory and item system, which allows to customize units Tech tree is available from mission one, so you are free to experiment and try anything you want, also maps are nice to explore, but later missions start to feel empty No need to build stockpiles for proxies Overall cute design of buildings and units So... overall I expected more development from DNA or swarm thing, which assimilates new species to fill the niche, but no. I think its fine for its price and hope devs will improve it with a new DLC update
