The Hex

Somewhat of a prequel to inscription, if you look deep enough into the lore. Overall really fun game. Works great on SteamDeck despite the controller/keyboard cross over. Somewhat of a mixed bag, but includes murder mystery elements, as well game styles from popular genres. Great deal when it's on sale. Really fun.

I tried playing this game multiple times. Fun: * humor Not fun: * characters are basic * most of the minigames are basic and sometimes too long. It's getting boring and annoying very quickly. * no gamepad support

7.1 This is quite a weird one to formulate my thoughts to. The core game of The Hex is a pretty interesting narrative experience across many different game genres. It's one that I would suggest you jump into and just play it through. Without going too far into things, parts of it were a little slower and tedious and some parts were a lot more interesting. It was just missing 'something' to me, maybe an expansion on some of the setups. I still do very much recommend a visit. More over the background narrative is what has raised this a few more points to me. I won't spoil anything but evolving an outer narrative with continuation from prior and to the future also is an interesting concept and has me even more intrigued for future Mullins games. Albeit very smartly done in that only a small portion of things is initially shown to the player. All of the rest is ARG which is a bit of a mixed bag, intriguing and smart when it's come together after the fact. But I cannot imagine the frustration and emptiness as it was ongoing.

Feels like a game that's often overlooked but definitely not inferior to any of Daniel Mullins's other games. The hopping of genres, the metanarrative element, the superficial mystery developing real suspense and everything connecting together, in all a great narrative. The different genres are friendly to people who have never experienced them, and there is of course the slight horror twist seen in all of Mullins's games which isn't scary enough to deter most people even if they don't like horror. The concept feels most reminiscent of [i]Wreck it Ralph[/i] or [i]There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension[i], but the execution feels original and the borrowing from and playing with genres really does create something unique.
