The Great War: Western Front™

Underrated. Sadly there are very few players

In the end this game was cringe.

A game for anyone who likes the history of ww1, the gameplay is fun its like total war battles with CIV map layout and movement. Tech tree is fun and it makes you really think about your next choices.

The Great War ist empfehlenswert, die historischen Ereignisse im 1. Weltkrieg sind sehr gut in das Spiel integriert, auch die Kampfhandlungen sind sehr nah den realen Ereignissen nachempfunden. Das Spiel ist sehr kurzweilig und von der Komplexität noch überschaubar. Diese Spiel ist auf jeden Fall eine Empfehlung wert, allerdings ist es für mich nach knapp 40 Stunden Spielzeit kein Long Player Spiel. Dafür sind die Kampfhandlungen, sowohl im Angriff als auch in der Verteidigung immer sehr ähnlich ohne größere Abwechslung, das auf längere Zeit zu einer Ermüdung führen kann.

C'est sûr que c'est pas pour tout le monde, mais c'est un très bon jeu assez complet même si on voudrait toujours plus. Pour 10€ ou moins foncez.

There are a lot of bad reviews for this game. I played it quite a lot, and have to disagree. It is a good game in the first world war setting. Playing it really gives this vibe of world war one, deaths by the thousand in each assault, technology evolving quickly to attack and defend. I'll address several criticism that are regurlaly said about this game : -The game is boring : it is not. The AI depends a lot on difficulty. Contrary to other games, higher difficulty also enhance how the AI acts, and not only what ressources it has. Playing on higher difficulty, I had the AI use light artillery with accuracy to pin down several trenches at once, something lower level AI didn't do, and that as a player is very hard to do, requiring very precise timing. On top of that, at higher level, the AI uses all tools at the disposal of players too. I was never bored, each time I thought I was in total control, the AI used another tool to make the game harder. Like undermining trenches and detonating it during an assault, leaving a huge hole in my defences. Or evolving to use chemical attacks with mustard gas while I only had lower level of gas protection. You feel bored, you want a challenge ? Play the maximum difficulty setting. -The game is not reallistic : it is not indeed, being a bit more arcade than 100% world war one. It is a game. Some decisions are made to make it more enjoyable and intuitive to play. Infantry does not shoot into trenches, this isn't a 100% accurate, but it is better to tell immediately the player "you can't use foot infantry to fire inside trenches, you need to charge" instead of letting the player spend thousands of men trying to shoot inside trenches with basically no result (as it was during WW1). -The map is too small : the game is focused only on the western front, basically France and Belgium. It's in the title of the game, The Great War : Western Front. Anyway, the campaign is quite long, especially if you play manually every battle. People finding the game "boring" would find it even more boring with a bigger map. On top of it, the Germans never took Paris, the Entente never entered in Germany. As such, the Western Front was only located in northern France, Belgium, Luxembourg. Why would some people want to have a full german map ? -The research tree can't be fully researched : indeed they can't, once again it's a bit more realistic. The Germans barely developped their tanks, but had a big emphasis on air power, snipers, sturmtruppen. The Entente had the tanks. And lots of them. Nobody in this war developped everything. Choices must be made, that's good game design. All in all, I feel the game doesn't deserve all of this. It's is a great game about the Great War.

Authentic WW1 game ? yes. But for the same reason is boring as hell. The gameplay is really slow, you end turn after turn in the beginning and buckle down for enemy assault. Rinse and repeat.
