The God Unit is a first person physics puzzle adventure game in the same light as games like Portal and Q.U.B.E, only not nearly as good, more expensive, and really clunky and unpolished. The game tries to copy the humour of Portal, but badly and with a heavily accented voice over. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. Probably the real killer for the game is just the low production values and lack of polish here. The game assets are really poor, controls clunky, and the puzzles require a lot of awkward placement as you fight more against the bad control scheme and poorly implemented physics than the puzzles themselves. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy minimalist/poorly textured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of quality textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. The God Unit has the utterly unrealistic price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "Europa Universalis IV", "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" or "Rust". This puzzle game apes games like Portal and Q.U.B.E, but costs twice as much as those games!. Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. There's also thousands of free, superior quality games on Steam.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
The God Unit is honestly a hidden gem among first person puzzlers. It isn't perfect, but it has wit, some charm, is sufficiently self-aware and honestly pretty hard, but also satisfying. You can manipulate mass of cubes, which you can then use to activate switches, reverse gravity and even eventually create black holes to solve 45 puzzles. The game has a normal and hard difficulty; I haven't tried normal, but hard can occasionally softlock puzzles as some require you to precisely throw cubes into holes and resetting isn't always easy; sometimes you just have to restart the entire level. The physics generally work well enough, but there is the occasional trouble with having to be just a little too accurate. Such puzzles are few, though. Overall, though, I really liked The God Unit. It surprised me with some of the approaches to it's puzzles and is a definite recommendation for any first person puzzle fan.
