The devs should've noted that this was only a first act. If you go in with that in mind, it's not a bad game. The puzzles are solid, and the combat is slow and easy but it provides a stimulating break from thinking. It has its rough edges, but for a first release? It's really nice. I hope the devs managed to do something else, wherever they are.
I really enjoyed it. The Girl and the Robot was at a gamestop. I took it home, played it, and had fun. The graphics totally took me back to ps1/ps2 but that was kind of why I really liked it. They don't make games like this anymore. I hope they continue the story. Don't know why people are harping on it so much the story isn't even done yet. Play it for yourself, its enjoyable if you just want something short and easy. Its the simple things in life that make it fun. I repurchased it on steam to try it on the PC and still had fun. Took a minute to figure out the controls but its not like it was hard. Still really like it.
Loved the game. It's beautiful, it's simple and it's satisfactory. The game contains a silent line, there are no characters line during the entire game and even so they manage to tell the story behind the misterious kingdom you are in. I'm looking forward to Act II!
i loved every minute of this game ... the story yes a bit cliche ... and hey the cut scense could use more work ... i mean i would have liked a longer game ... of which would have made me feel more for the two the girl and the robot..but i sorta was left un fulfilled after the end of this game like i would have cared less to what happened to them, i mean you hardly see or know why the robot is the way he is unless i missed something... it was way to short.mechanics are fun plot is charming...but it beign worth 10 $ i am uncertain if the game play was longer i would say hell yes .. but im afraid it was way to short and i am uncertain if the second install ment will be considered a seprate game of add on to this one eather way.. i would recomend you get this on sale .
The Girl and the Robot is a short adventure game that obviously takes inspiration in games of the likes of Ico. Here, you'll have to make two characters collaborate, using their complementary abilities: one is strong and can fight and push heavy blocks around, the other is nimble and can jump and get into narrow places. I'll let you guess which is which. The mechanics convey well the idea of collaboration, and it shows a dependency between both protagonists. It can seem at first that the robot is here to rescue the girl, but she's just as necessary to their escape as he is. Some "take-care" mechanics also foster that feeling: the girl can heal the robot after he was injured in combats, and he can pick her on his shoulder and carry her around. I would in fact do that sometimes with no real purpose just because I found that mechanic very cute. However, as much as I love the core mechanics, there are some flaws too. The most striking one is that there is almost no music throughout the game, which makes it feel more empty than it should. The soundtrack itself is pretty great; it would be better if we'd get to hear more of it. The other one is the combat. The closer you get to the end of the game, the more often you'll have to fight swarms of enemies, often in tight rooms. Sometimes, it's hard to do a single hit in those situations. However, having the girl being super vulnerable and needing to hide is a fun twist in my opinion, and as some people pointed out, it makes the combat feel like an escort mission (which I see positively). With that as well as the two weapons available, I think there is a lot of potential for an appealing combat-system. And to be honest, I found it more appealing and way less repetitive than in adventure games like Ico. I know some people criticize the game for ending on a cliffhanger and not disclosing well enough that this is actually Act 1 of a series. It's fair, but I'm personally happy that we have a chance to someday have a game that will follow the same direction as The Girl and the Robot while hopefully fixing some of its flaws. Its universe and its mechanics deserve to be revisited, and overall, the goods outweigh the bads by far.
Finally finished this game after having it for years and... it was ok. Good things first, the art style is so charming. It's simple but really cute. And the controls are easy enough to grasp, you switch control between the Girl and the Robot to solve puzzles and progress further through the story. Your partner will always stay still so no worries about dodgy AI, I often found it was useful to go as far ahead as I could playing as the robot to clear away any enemies. The story itself, told dialogue free, is quite interesting and has a nice fairytale vibe to it. I also think the soundtrack is really nice and suits the gameplay well, it's something I would happily have on in the background while I'm doing something else. Now for the flaws, and flawed is how I would describe this game overall. Combat controls can sometimes be a bit slow to respond, there's this weird grey flash that keeps coming up during cutscenes and (for me at least) there seemed to be a good deal of trial and error to get past some sections. Furthermore while the story was interesting the game as a whole game kept losing me, the reason I have 11 hours logged on this game is because I kept starting then not touching it for months, the actual game is quite short once you know what you're doing. Unfortunately the game (spoiler) also ends on a cliffhanger, with no sign of Act 2 anytime soon (especially as the devs are working on a different game at the moment). I would recommend this to anyone who likes some action and puzzles with a charming art style, but I can't say it's amazing and if cliffhangers are a deal breaker you will be disappointed. My opinion may change when Act 2 is finally released but at this point I really can't see myself returning to The Girl and The Robot now I've finished it.
Storyline - 9/10 Combat System - 5/10 Graphic - 9/10 Music - 10/10 Overall, I say 8.5/10 not a bad game, I LOVE IT!
This is a game I've had on my back burner for a long time. I had initially purchased the PS4 Deluxe physical copy of the game and had started playing that, but then turned to Steam once I lost access to my PS4. With how the game began and hearing just how wonderful the soundtrack is, I was excited to finish the game. This is a retro-styled single-player game where you play as a Girl and a Robot, and you switch perspectives throughout the game to complete puzzles. The Girl is initially locked in a tower and is freed by a mysterious old man with a bird, and through her travels, she finds an amulet that lets her control and befriend a Robot. Through their travels you fight enemies, solve puzzles, and you try to escape the place that's imprisoned the Girl. The main goal is escaping the castle grounds with additional story history you learn as you view paintings scattered through the castle grounds. There is no dialogue to the game, only sounds, so everything is visual. There are no answers as to why the Girl was imprisoned, why the evil queen is keeping her there, why the amulet was there, why it's so hard to get to the castle, or even who the old man is. The game itself is shrouded in mystery, and it ends in a massive cliffhanger though the devs have stated that while they don't have anything in the works for now (even a decade later) there might still be one in the future. The gameplay itself was relatively easy to understand. The Girl could move around, jump, and interact with some objects but could not fight. The Robot could move around, interact with objects, fight with a sword and bow, defend with the shield, and could do somewhat of a dodge with what could could be considered a "jump" action. At best it could be described as defective rockets propelling slightly in a direction quickly. While the puzzles were easy to understand and complete, fighting was a whole different beast. Fighting a couple of enemies was fine, but any more than 3 enemies at a time and it would be difficult to take them down. The controls felt delayed when fighting, and that quickly became the bane of my existence. It makes sense that the number of enemies would increase the further in you get, but I would have liked to have more abilities or easier combos further in the game. The gameplay itself also seems much harder than most gameplay videos out there, so I don't know if there was an update to combat that and make it more difficult (similar to Misao's situation with the devs changing the game a few times in light of people making videos of their game) but it seemed a little unnecessary to me. Now the music was gorgeous and loved listening to it. It was well made, beautiful, and it loops well. As much as I love it and listen to it constantly outside of the game since I bought the soundtrack, I don't feel the music really describes the game itself. With as many combats are there were in the game, I wish there was some variation with the music, or using the battle puzzle music on more than one or two fights. The soundtrack led me to believe the game was more exploratory and puzzle based than the experience I got. I will still continue to listen to the soundtrack because I love it though. As an achievement hunter, being able to get all the achievements is a goal for me. Most of the achievements are story-based which I appreciate, and the hidden achievements are fun little easter eggs that are much harder to find, but still have little queues to find them or are out of place enough you figure it out, like an arrow or interacting with the paintings. Overall, as much as I wanted to love this game, I can't recommend it. The game felt unreasonably difficult after the first third of the game after you leave the city, the fights were more difficult than they should be for the fighting techniques you're given, and the story just isn't substantial enough for me to feel good about the time I put into the game itself. I am willing to put myself through a lot of frustration for games as long as I feel like I'm rewarded for it, and this game unfortunately didn't feel rewarding for the hours of frustration I went through.
