I’m about fifteen hours into the game. I never judge a visual novel by its cover, and I always try to finish at least one route before forming an opinion. However, The Fruit of Grisaia is so frustratingly tedious and superficial that I feel like I’m already giving it more credit than it deserves just by sticking with it. First off, the protagonist is a mess. His background hints at him being some kind of former soldier, and he’s incredibly erudite and painfully blunt. On paper, that sounds like a strong character foundation. In practice, though, the moment Yuuji opens his mouth, it becomes unbelievably cringeworthy and exhausting to read. He’ll launch into a massive wall of text just because one of the girls seems slightly down. And that would be fine if those monologues had even a sliver of charm, wit, or meaningful character development. Instead, they’re just a barrage of bizarre assumptions, edgy references to his military past, and long-winded nonsense directed at whichever heroine happens to be nearby. Michiru: *feels down* Yuuji: “You have dysentery, maggot! Let me examine your bowel right this instant! Huh? What do you mean you’re not sick? Then you must have a parasite in your brain!” That’s not witty or quirky... It’s just insufferable. And it becomes even more grating when the same gag is repeated over and over (specifically at Michiru's expense). It doesn’t help that some of the heroines are just as irritating. Combine Yuuji’s pseudo-intellectual rambling and failed dry humor with Michiru’s constant word-tripping and exaggerated stupidity. Or Makina's shtick about copying other people and just basically being a child. Too often have I found myself rolling my eyes when I heard another "banter" of Michiru/Makina/Yujii because their interaction feels like another repetitive gimmick stretched far beyond its comedic lifespan. The result is a cast dynamic that leans heavily on one-note quirks rather than meaningful interaction or character development. On top of that, these slice-of-life, sitcom wannabe scenes are painfully boring and contribute almost nothing to the overarching plot. Im serious. You could skip an hour or two of dialogue and still land at the exact same narrative point. I appreciate a good slow burn. I really do. But you have to give me something in return—engaging banter, character dynamics, or at least charming mischief situations. Why did Little Busters work for me with its slice-of-life scenes, and this did not? There has to be something that makes the journey worthwhile. I’m still holding out hope that the character routes will elevate the experience. But so far, it’s been a slog.
Still the best thing I've ever experienced in any genre in any medium, Actually life changing
The Fruit of Grisaia is over 15 Years old, but it aged super well. Great Humor and Characters, stunning visuals and an overall great story which sometimes gets really emotional. The game does a great job in knowing when it's okay to be silly, and when it should be serious, and always find the right words in its emotional moments. It's not perfect there are some issues like the Route of Makina and especially Amanes have Pacing issues, and I didn't like the Ending of Amanes Route especially in the Context of the second game the labyrinth of grisaia. And I found most of the H-Scenes really unappealing especially Makinas, the only ones that didn't fall into that category were the ones with Yumiko. But asides from that, you absolutely don't do anything wrong with the Fruit of Grisaia. The playtime can potentially turn some people off but im reading like a snail so ignore that also there is idle time in it where I just listened to the music or thought about some things that happend in the story or specific parts of the dialogue. I can recommend it, when you're looking for a well written VN, that has some issues, but is overall absolutely worth your time and money. And in case you're a Steam Deck User reading this, the game doesn't work in Game Mode, there are way to many issues, starting the game in the Desktop Mode fixes this.
“I can fix her”, but the protagonist actually can. Personally I feel some routes needed more editing; it is a bit long winded where it doesn’t need to be at times, and then way too hasty when it could have taken its time otherwise. Still, the writers for this are clearly competent. They know best when to leave things unsaid, and they portray these broken people very well and in a very human way. The foreshadowing is masterful, and small details do add up. Yet this story takes some decidedly surreal turns at points. Very grandiose, borderline magical things happen in an otherwise pretty grounded setting. Basically every route has some sort of moment where your ability to suspend disbelief is pushed, to say the least. Overall it’s a good experience. Some routes were disappointing, some routes were great. What I can say is the characters are wonderful and I can see why this story received a sequel.
After finally finishing one characters route (Michiru) I can confidently say this is my favourite visual novel. I am now hollow and totally alone after finishing it. When is she going to crawl through the monitor and comfort me?
You thought you'd be getting another stupid romance highschool lore, BUT NO YOU GET 4 DEPRESSED GIRL and a cigarrete after s3x kinda thing
Nothing outstanding, honestly, except the bizarre situation you're in. Too much slice-of-life content for me, you literally read through many-many hours of "kids go to school" without any choices. Still recommend it though, since once you go through many hours of nothing ever happens, something interesting finally happens. Ignore play hours, sometimes out of boredom I collapse the game window & do other things.
