The Excavation of Hob's Barrow

Something of Lovecraft, something of old point-and-click games. Feels like interactive movie with very smooth and slow atmosphere. Puzzles are quite easy and solutions are logical. Totally worth it!

Wonderful voice acting and i deeply enjoyed the music the whole way through. Really added to the ominous tension. Got stuck once or twice as a few puzzles require you to re-talk to people once you've looked at something so not always clear as to how to progress. But a very enjoyable and classically 'folk horror' plot with lots of lovely little touches. I had a great time

An enjoyable romp through the countryside

I don't ever leave reviews, but this game deserves it. I bought this game as I wanted something I could just pick up and play whilst getting immersed into a story, and this game completely scratched that itch for me. From the art style, to the voice acting and setting, this game is very well made. There have been a few reviews about the ending, but for me personally I loved it. The puzzles are completely fair and wont have you scratching your head for hours, the game is actually kindly designed to stop you straying too far or speaking to people you have already exhausted all dialogue options for. It's a great balance between story/gameplay. Since my Mother is from Northern England, the accents actually felt kind of homely, but of course this won't apply to everyone. Absolutely recommend, I hope there will be more like this in future!

I had a lot of fun with this very playable game. The voice acting and dialog in general are so well done. A few challening puzzles, but for the most-part very easy - developers definitely wanted to push the story forward instead of having you stuck. A calm and moody ambience throughout. I would love to visit Bewley.. It's rare to finish a game these days, and this was 9 hours well spent indeed.

So, so good. Played it more than once...only wish I could wipe the plot from my mind, so I could discover the story all over again for the first time.

This game is much like reading a short story about an Eldritch horror, it really takes it time building up to the conclusion and illustrates the character's motivation through revealing past trauma. Much like a short story it ends so quickly, only gives some answers, and leaves much room for interpretation. The game plays like a 90's point-and-click (yes, I played them back then). Unlike the ones in the 90's, this game has puzzles balanced enough not to interrupt the flow of the story. The game has good pixel work, it embraces larger pixels but still animates the characters well. It also shows a strange beauty in the drab landscapes shown. The game has a narrative focus, but it really shows its understanding for point-and-click games.
