The Drifter

Great story, pixel art is fantastic, puzzles are decent and logical, for point and click adventurers, its a must play.

Astoundingly beautiful point-and-click with a very well-written story, mostly great puzzles, and truly fantastic voice acting.

I'm generally not a point & click player, in fact this is only my 3rd point & click game in my 15 years of PC gaming. But the artstyle caught my eyes and i heard many great things about the drifter so i gave it a shot. I have mixed feelings about it in the end, the gameplay really wasn't for me and it dragged on a bit too often. But the excellent characters, story and especially the vocal performances by the cast make me lean towards a positive review. The drifter is a game that lives or dies on the strenght of its story which was mostly great despite some pacing issues. There were some clichés/tropes and very predictable turns but as a whole it wasn't half bad. The premise is cool though, tying dying into the story and gameplay was a cool gimmick that's well executed. But the characters themselves and their voice acting really did the heavy lifting here. While some lines were a bit too heavy handed, especially those coming from the main character but only some. All the other lines and deliveries were excellent which is rare for an indie title. The animations are also super expressive despite the 16 bit artstyle, speaking of which the game is a real eye catcher. Despite there not being very many environments for such a long game, they were still awesome too look at with good visual variety. They did sometimes fail to signpost important interactables though which made me miss crucial pieces of the puzzle at times, creating some frustration. There's also just a few puzzles that are too far fetched or illogical which also made me stuck for a bit at moments. Luckily there's a button that highlights interactables but despite that i was still clueless at times with how to progress due to the far fetched nature of the solution. I suppose it's just the thing with point and click games. On a final note there are the sound effects which were EXCELLENT, making the game much more immersive. Music was good too but it's not my style, still it fit the rest of the game well. It's a good game that hinges on the good story but overstays its welcome by a few hours due to confusing puzzles, still worth playing though.

I wish I had an "in between" option for this one. The puzzles are okay, but sometimes unnecessarily obscure. The story is just fine, but nothing that impressive.

really great story, art, acting, music, etc. loved it as someone who played the monkey island games growing up.
