The Dreams in the Peacock House is an an old-school text adventure that diverges into visual novel sections with an occasional simple puzzle. It has been many years since I used a text interface in a game (open door, go west, etc.). It felt odd to reengage this part of my imagination and type my way through an environment. I was briefly taken back to a time when gaming required a different sort of visualization and creative thinking. The good news is that I was not eaten by a Grue in the Peacock House! You begin in a house, unlock doors, and explore connecting rooms to locate magic eyes. Each eye is associated with a dream sequence. You are in the mind of Angus who has been isolated for some time and has decided to wake up and get back to living. Each dream is presented as a segment of an old TV Show and is formatted like a visual novel with some animation and conversation. I really enjoyed the style of the art and the soundtrack. It is a short and surreal adventure that does not make a lot of sense but is engaging and fun to experience. It has some nice touches, such as when you create a "painting" and then see your work hanging in an art gallery! It took me about an hour to reach the Sanctum Sanctorum and complete my adventure. At the end, I realized that I had missed a few things. So, I circled back for a second pass. I’m still short one encounter but am not sure the third time will be a charm. The game autosaves after each of 4 dreams and Steam achievements are not supported. I recommend The Dreams in the Peacock House to those looking for a short, but sweet, nostalgic adventure with art and music that is pleasing to the eyes and ears. Simply fantastic! It shifts between text-based adventure, classic visual novel, and interactive segments, doesn’t wander in one place for too long, which keeps it engaging, while its difficulty is relatively low. The story is about awakening, acceptance, and inner conflict; it has elements that I think resonate well with the times we live in and how lost many of us feel in life. Maybe I was a little too introspective with that last part? Well, doesn’t matter, what matters is that the game is great and has personality. Buy it, there’s even a duck in it.
Beautiful. If you are looking for a short, self-contained visual novel with a surreal premise, a memorable visual style, and fun (and not frustrating) little puzzles, this game is definitely for you. I love the creativity of the developer, and I will definitely check out their other works on their Itch page. And I also loved how the game told me what I missed through the game. I will absolutely play it all over again to find everything this time.
This game is probably my definition of short and sweet. If you take your time and truly try to understand what is happening and what everything means its extremely rewarding. I have my own personal idea of what the story means and what exactly is happening that may or may not be what the dev intended but that's the fun and uniqueness of art. i will definitely be looking forward to future projects from the dev. The combination of text adventure, visual novel, and point and click gameplay features was amazing and they all work extremely well together. my BIGGEST compliment is that this game actually tells you if you missed something. Instead of wandering around with an infinite amount of things to type into the text prompt, the game tells you what you missed when the credits roll so you can go back and experience what you missed. I do wonder though if there are secrets not mentioned in the ending. I also wonder if there is a way to achieve a different ending as a lot of plot elements kind of brought that up as a possibility. but nonetheless i thought the game was fantastic and highly recommend it, ESPECIALLY because of how cheap it is. WELL worth it for the money in my opinion. Now part of me does wish that the puzzles were more complex or harder but that's just the inner puzzle game fan in me. hopefully the dev continues at it and releases another game down the line in a similar style with more complex puzzles. And if the dev is reading this, i would like to know what everything symbolizes and means from your perspective to compare and contrast it with my interpretation of the story. TLDR: Buy it, Play it, and Play it again 10/10 Absolute Cinema
A delightful burst of vibrant surrealism and old-school charm. To say too much about a game like The Dreams in the Peacock House would be to spoil the fun. The joy of short experimental pieces like this is to dive in head first. To wake up fresh in a new experience and let yourself be taken by it wherever it leads. So for now I'll simply say it's a clever mix of classic genres with puzzles that hit just the right balance of satisfying without disrupting the momentum, and vivid art that perfectly captures the dreamlike atmosphere. I'd love to see more in this style, and I'll be back to see what secrets I missed.
What a surprising experience to stumble upon! It's a small game but i did feel the creator was able to say a lot that resonated with me, even through the surrealist lens. lovely pixel art, good music, great dream to wake up from. if you've got a few bucks and a few hours, give it a go :3
Simple, but meaningful and well crafted. Well worth the asking price.
Really enjoyed this! The surreal and constrained visual style create a stylish atmosphere that I haven't experienced elsewhere. Without getting too spoilery, the game juggles multiple genres in an interesting way, shifting between them create some lovely moments. There are some puzzles in the game, but they're less like challenges and more like invitations to thoroughly explore the environments. Wonderful, short experience. Great way to spend an evening!
Short and sweet. Its a text adventure and point and click game. I love the variety in the enviroments and UI. It's mysterious and up for interpretation which I liked.
Hell yeah, pretty sure this is the first game made in Decker to make it to Steam. An important historic occasion! And it's great, like it's doing some cool mixed media stuff with the text parser and the graphical interactive bits. And there's bugs (as in insects, not as in errors). Based on the ending I think there's a whole bunch of secrets I didn't find so I will have to revisit! But this is a very cool little game! It is not a long game but games do not need to be long. It is good!
