->Вердикт<-

It's a very strange game, if you can even call it that. It takes 15 minutes to complete... but the graphics are nice.
I Know This Place..? Chapter I (Prologue), developed by SameFrame and RBL LABS and published by RBL LABS, is a hauntingly atmospheric narrative experience that merges first-person exploration with surreal storytelling. As the opening entry to a planned episodic series, it introduces players to a strange, liminal world that feels suspended somewhere between memory and dream. The game begins with a simple premise: the protagonist receives an invitation from an old friend to visit a familiar apartment. What should have been a brief and nostalgic reunion quickly turns uncanny as the familiar becomes foreign and every object seems charged with unspoken significance. The apartment is frozen in time, filled with echoes of the past, and the player is left to explore its rooms in search of meaning, piecing together fragments of story from notes, clues, and environmental details. The design captures an unusual tone—one of nostalgia tinted with quiet dread. The setting evokes late-twentieth-century Eastern Europe, specifically the 1980s and 1990s, and the developers succeed in grounding the game’s surreal mystery within a realistic cultural context. The furniture, textures, and objects—cassette players, faded wallpaper, handwritten notes—convey an authenticity that makes the apartment feel lived-in yet unsettlingly static. Lighting and sound play a major role in shaping the atmosphere. The hum of fluorescent bulbs, the creak of the floorboards, and the low ambient music all contribute to a sense of isolation. It’s not horror in the conventional sense; instead, the game creates a lingering unease through suggestion and restraint. You feel as though you’ve returned to a place you should remember clearly but can’t quite place, and that dissonance becomes the heart of its emotional pull. Gameplay-wise, the experience sits comfortably within the exploration and narrative-driven genre. Players wander through the environment, examine objects, and solve small puzzles that encourage observation rather than logic-intensive problem solving. The puzzles are organically tied to the story, emphasizing immersion over difficulty, which helps maintain the flow of the narrative. The lack of overt challenge allows the player to focus on the tone and themes rather than mechanical mastery. This structure makes the game ideal for those who enjoy slower, meditative experiences similar to titles like What Remains of Edith Finch or The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, where discovery and introspection are more important than action or consequence. For a prologue, it serves its purpose well—providing a strong foundation for future installments while leaving enough mystery to keep players intrigued. Visually, the game’s art direction is understated but evocative. The environments are rendered with a subdued palette of greys, browns, and muted blues that mirror the melancholic tone of the story. Subtle details like light flicker, worn surfaces, and dust motes create a palpable sense of space. The developers clearly aimed for atmosphere over spectacle, and in doing so they capture the spirit of forgotten domestic spaces—rooms that feel abandoned yet preserved, like fragments of a dream that refuse to fade. The realism of the setting enhances the emotional weight of exploration; every drawer, photograph, or sound cue feels deliberate, as if each were part of a larger memory puzzle waiting to be solved. The sense of place is so strong that the apartment itself becomes a character—a silent witness to the protagonist’s confusion and nostalgia. Narratively, I Know This Place..? Chapter I embraces ambiguity. It provides clues and emotional impressions rather than direct exposition, encouraging players to interpret the story through their own imagination. The title’s question mark reflects its central theme—doubt about memory, identity, and the reliability of perception. The protagonist’s relationship with the unseen friend is never fully explained, and much of the meaning is found in the small environmental details scattered throughout the setting. The experience unfolds more like a poem than a traditional story, with imagery and symbolism taking precedence over dialogue. It’s an introspective journey, more about mood and feeling than about resolution, and it leaves players with the distinct impression that they’ve only scratched the surface of something larger and deeply personal. As a prologue, the game is brief—most players can complete it in under an hour—but its brevity feels intentional rather than lacking. It functions as a self-contained episode that sets the tone and thematic direction for what’s to come. The developers’ decision to release it as part of a broader “transmedia” project adds an interesting meta layer: players are invited to engage with the creative process, contribute feedback, and even influence the continuation of the story. This collaborative approach aligns well with the game’s introspective nature, blurring the boundaries between creator and audience. The promise of future chapters suggests that this opening act is only the first piece of a much larger puzzle, one that may eventually reveal the meaning behind its surreal world. In its current form, I Know This Place..? Chapter I (Prologue) is more of an experience than a conventional game. It trades traditional gameplay systems for atmosphere, narrative experimentation, and emotional resonance. It may feel too minimalistic for players seeking complex interaction, but for those drawn to introspective storytelling and subtle worldbuilding, it offers a quietly mesmerizing journey. Every corner of the apartment hides a story, every sound evokes memory, and every unanswered question deepens the intrigue. It’s a delicate and beautifully realized beginning—enigmatic, melancholic, and immersive—hinting that what lies ahead will be a deeply personal exploration of place, time, and the fragile boundaries of memory.
