The Dream of a Cockspur is a guided fever dream that utilizes a nostalgic point and click framework and a painterly aesthetic to create a compelling if brief and disjointed journey. The most obvious thing to praise is what drew me to the project in the first place, the art is immaculate. It feels hand crafted and hazily imperfect in a way that mirrors the game’s tone and makes the impressionistic design of its world more evocative. It perfectly captures a kind of waking dream feeling, like your character is muddling half-conscious through a nightmare. Characters act human but take the form of geometric constructs, the world is alive but with a twisted form of nature, otherworldly beings seem to phase in and out of existence, the game is full of thought-provoking oddities. There is a horror element to The Dream of a Cockspur, but I would not describe the game as horrifying because it is too stylized to really be jarring. It is more absurd and outlandish, but thankfully it does not dip into meaningless randomness. In terms of pure vision, The Dream of a Cockspur succeeds wildly. Its puzzles require more thought than simply trying out different items in different situations. The game also asks players to observe their surroundings carefully and remember certain particularities although the effect of misremembering is not totally pronounced. The puzzles are interesting and varied and employ thematic absurdity but with logical premises. Unfortunately, the game is almost totally void of challenge, which I feel is a missed opportunity considering the puzzle-like structure of the narrative really could have lent itself to some big picture complexities. The game begins with a mandate: find the traitor. Your character injects themselves with something and awakens in a quiet cabin. Your first goal is to eat some peanut butter and bread. The animation for spreading the peanut butter on bread is fascinating and tone setting. You can explore the cabin to find the books on a shelf and some personal effects stored in bunks, but you will eventually make your way outside where you will begin to meet bizarre characters and creatures. The way the game introduces its surreal world is so strange but also weirdly cohesive. There are four other researchers stranded on a strange island with you, each of whom has a distinct personality and design. I really enjoyed each and every interaction with these characters even if they were few and fleeting. Words don’t do the setting justice, you have to experience it. For all its esoteric layers, The Dream of a Cockspur conveys a relatively straightforward message, the mission statement of which can be found produced in explicit text within the game. Of particular importance I found were the crops grown by your small community. Unfortunately, I moved deeper into the game, the settings progressively got less interesting to me. The characters you begin to get a familiarity with take a back seat to a sci-fi story that is cool in concept but particularly void of compelling character portraits. The story ends up feeling spotty, which to be fair contributes to the disorienting dream-like quality of the game, but I can’t help but wish there was just more game here with more compelling connection between its vignettes. That being said, wanting more game is a good indicator that what is present is worthwhile. It will only take you a few hours to beat but this is the kind of unique game well worth supporting, particularly if you like the aesthetic it presents.
So dark and deep and discomfiting - the story is very interesting and well written, and the music and style are so good and unnerving. Overall such a well put together indie game with a lot of style, and they listen to their community a lot, having released so many little bug fixes over the last week which is great. A quick play with some unique ideas for a point and click, and definitely mysterious enough to be replayable - still need to find some of the secrets!
