Reviewed using HTC Vive Pro
Would like to see added support for the HYPERKIN Hyper Blaster "Dual Wield" in fact. I really think the added Haptic Feedback and Recoil this Vive Tracker controller has. Would be excellent fit for your Game DEV❗️
Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2
If you enjoyed Space Pirate Trainer and wanted something a little different, but still fun, then this is not it, chief. This is a challenging 360 wave shooter where you have to dodge, shoot, slice, & use your shields to survive each wave. Colored balls come out of walls. You shoot them and they generally break into smaller balls. Although, different colored balls behave differently. Some will explode, others will come at you fast. Some will leave behind power-ups that will change your weapon or explode balls near them or explode all of them. It sounds like fun in theory, but in practice it's just a bland wave shooter with poor mechanics, dull graphics, & uninspired gameplay. Balls will bounce in odd directions. There's no spatial audio. You have to keep pressing your trigger finger for each shot. Yeah, my fingers are aching. I didn't have fun. I found the challenge tedious. Progress is saved every 5 levels. I managed to get to level 6 before tapping out. I imagine that's farther than most people who have played this game. It's just not fun. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 frames per second. I did not experience any issues or bugs (swords work fine when you press grip/grab). I recommend a room-scale setup to play this. I paid $2 bucks for this on a Steam sale back in June 2020. This may have been a good game in 2017, but it's dated and outplayed in 2021. Not sure I got my money's worth. Rate 4/10. You do get a good workout.
Please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. You can join here: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Oculus_WMR
Note: the sword glitch mentioned in this review has been fixed. Honestly, I got the jist of it in about 20 minutes, but what's here isn't particularly engaging compared to competition in the genre of "arena" or "wave shooters". THE BOX VR pits the player against a bunch of bouncing balls in a square room while the player tries to dodge and pop them with laser pistols. Different colored balls have different properties, such as tracking the player on deployment, but every single ball type will split into two smaller balls that also need to be dispatched. If a ball hits you, the wave you're on restarts. Three hits and you're out. The player's got pistols, shields (that are angled strangely) and I guess a sword, but I could never get the sword to activate using the grip button. All balls pop with one shot. Ther are powerups, like an explosive gun that I feel is actually slightly worse then than the starting pistol, double points and a very, very short range explosive that you can shoot. Now, the premise seems fine, but after a few minutes of balls bouncing around off everything, including each other, it's very apparent that this game is in dire need of variation. Because the only danger is a ball hitting you, most of the time you're forced to either shoot everything as quickly as possible, or focus entirely on dodging, at eventually you'll hit a wall where you can't manage anymore. That's fine, in practice, but there's only so many waves before that happens constantly. Maybe it would be easier with the sword they keep asking me to use (as I said, it was unusable when I played), but I've played other wave shooters that feel less frustrating, more fun, but still ask of the same level of skill from the player. I don't really think THE BOX VR is bad, it's just not as good as some of the other similar titles out there that cost a similar amount. With some work it could become a viable option, but I don't see myself playing this over Space Pirate Trainer or Blasters of the Universe any time soon. Between the hours of 4 and 5 this morning somebody decided it would be a great idea to play this! So Einarr goes first with his double pistols whilst the Mrs sits there chuckling because hes been teabagged several times by flying balls in his vr haven "GAME OVER!"......"alright then smartarse! lets see if youre any better!" The big man was humbled thoroughly as she used her shield like an umbrella and just castrated those pesky testicles wave after wave pirroutting and laying hurt on balls until her lust for ball slaying was ended abruptly by a rogue digital teste "GAME OVER" cue typing in name first place on the leaderboard (local) andd you could just feel the smugness with each letter. And that is how the war of the balls started! How will it end? well there will be lots of swearing lots of shock and lots of silly moves thinking youre john wick or neo and neighbours thinking youre practiscing the kama sutra. Exactly how a game should be! GREAT FUN GREAT LONGEVITY!
It is a very entertaining game and I recommend it. You can play alone or fight with your friends for the best score. I like it a lot because you can play many hours and many times without getting bored. It's crazy but very fun! A 360º experience!
A new twist on the wave based shooting games you see litter steam, but very polished. With the amount of headsets being sold this year, this might be my go-to recommendation for those not familiar with vr and have gotten past the "experiences". As someone who has played a lot of VR, I still really like it for what it is -- a leaderboard chasing arcade game. For me, personally, I still see myself popping in for a few rounds daily. It's just a lot of fun to play! https://youtu.be/s2-9H5SLZWo
