Pains me to give a negative review to it, as I enjoy most of it, but, the lack of a save system, and most importantly, an option to remove head motion, makes this game drop from an 8 out of 10 to a 3. Its a shame, that in this day and age, devs have to be constantly reminded that some effects, like head bob or camera shake can make people seriously ill. And while that still happens Ill start to give a negative review to any game that doesn't give an option to remove those effects. (I'll change my review if and when this option is added.)
no toggle for head bob, no adjustable settings, terrible cam effect distortion which cant be turned off. feels like its just jumping on the backrooms bandwagon. abit of a cash grab imo
Caused PC to crash upon opening, restarted PC then it caused audio to not work on pc nor game. Restarted PC and game and audio worked. The game looks amazing, but only took 20 minutes to complete. Has a spooky and eerie vibe to it. At the end The game says "to be continued". I am going to refund for now. because of how short it is for the price. So If you are willing to pay the 4.99 for 20 minutes of playtime then support it if you have the extra cash. I am broke at the moment. Spend time admiring the rooms to stretch the play time.
I finished this in 18mins. Can't recommend this until there is more content. It ran really good though and I liked the yellow rooms, dirty and old. Atmosphere fell short. Hopefully this isn't a dead game because I would like to see this reworked or expanded upon.
"The Backrooms: Expedition" feels like one of the developer's first projects. They just wanted to take a shot at the Backrooms and have a bit of fun. The game isn't outright bad, I've played way worse, but I don't think it deserves to be paid; that's why this is a negative review. The Good: - Good graphics, admittedly. - Responsive controls - While the game feels like an asset flip, the assets actually feel like they belong to a common art style and they mesh relatively well together, which most games of this caliber can't pull off. The Bad: - Very short. Finished the game in exactly 20 minutes. - Level design feels uninspired. The point of a Backrooms game is to be able to make a barren environment interesting; this game doesn't quite cut it. It mostly feels like an empty map with random models added as an afterthought, more than being designed with its decoration in mind. - Low quality horror. The painted arrows and text such as "He's watching" on the walls were more corny than anything else, and the occasional random noise barely made me flinch. - Very boring entity chase. The entity (whose appearance is straight up stolen from Kane Pixels) doesn't look nor sound scary, and the atmosphere really didn't build up for it either. It's just, you're walking down a long corridor, and suddenly the most generic chase music you can think of starts playing out of nowhere. The music is what triggers you to run, not the entity. And not because it's scary, only because you don't want to get caught and restart. - Uninteresting gameplay. In short: walk to a place, door is locked, walk to a different place, door is unlocked, get to the next room, rinse and repeat. The "maze" part in the Poolrooms level was more annoying than anything else. - Backrooms clichés. Oh no, Level Run. Red lights = scary. - No settings: The only settings are four graphical options. Also, only changeable in the pause menu; can't do it from the main menu. Extra: Influence From Other Games - The Complex: Expedition I think any of you that are like me and have played that game will agree that this feels like the main inspiration for this one. The name is nearly identical; the first level has an instance of unusually large chairs, something that was done in The Complex; even the camera bobbing feels similar (albeit stronger in this game). - Pools: This one is admittedly a bit more far fetched, but the use of monobloc chairs in the Poolrooms level definitely feels like it might be taken from Pools. Extra Stuff: - My flashlight didn't work until the Poolrooms level for some reason. I had to traverse several dark sections by hugging the walls. - Camera zoom is a nice touch, however it's not adjustable. It's just click only to zoom in, click again to zoom out.
A very short Backrooms game, but nonetheless I thought it was a pretty good one. The visuals look great and the game has plenty of atmosphere. Although there are monster chase sections, they are not frequent and are kept towards the end of the game. So in essence, much of what you do here fits the classic approach of liminal horror - exploring an eerie, silent environment that slowly creeps you out. The sound design is good and there is a little bit of visual variety other than just the standard Backrooms yellow halls. The only minor criticism is that the frame rate can become a little choppy in places. But other than that, The Backrooms: Expedition is worth trying! Oh, and also - this game gets a bonus point for having a player character who can actually sprint for more than a few seconds, unlike a lot of other horror games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_7jO4A2aBQ
A really cool fun realistic backrooms experience that i completed. It has some very nice graphics and some amazing levels so far. Good stuff
great game lots of content its a must play if u love to walk
I'm a big Backrooms and liminal fan, and while it's impossible for me to dislike any game made under these themes, I have to say this one probably felt the weakest. It felt kind of soulless; kind of just another lazy copy/paste of many other Backrooms games that have come before it. I could notice seams of walls and repeating texture patterns, and the seams of the start/end of the SFX. There are no options on the pause menu aside from what graphics presets to use. The monsters that chase you have a horribly cliche tense horror music play which feels so over the top cheesy it just completely detracts from the suspense. All that aside, for something positive, it was a very relaxing game to play and I love hearing the warm buzzing of the lights; they made me sleepy. The atmosphere was also very nice. If this is this guy's first game, you have potential, but perhaps work on some things. Thank you for making the game. ^^
I love walking
