About
This DLC follows the ending where Jan Scientist stays on the planet. Average playtime is estimated at 20 hours.
Jan Scientist can finally pursue his true calling. While other Jans left, he stayed to lead a team of new specialists - assembled by and from himself. Only a scientific crew of perfectly aligned altered Jan Scientists can offer the expertise needed to unravel the Oasis phenomenon.
Studying nature's survival here in space is a life-defining opportunity. However, this goal-oriented plan of the Jan Scientists might not be so apparent to Jan Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, or Physicist.
The Oasis, a lush paradise that shouldn't exist, becomes the mystery you will obsessively try to solve.
Terraforming the nine arenas unlocks it, forcing the landscape to yield answers. But with each seemingly right step on a research path, the planet responds with implacable earthquakes and radiation, hinting at secrets best left undiscovered.
Your biggest hurdle? Years-long planetary cycles of scorching sunrises that force you underground. Setting a functional underground base requires building in varied soils, constructing new components, and researching modules like the Cryosleep Chamber, which buys time to witness your scientific actions' long-term effects.
Still, even in cryo-slumber, increasingly vicious cycles wear down your crew’s readiness to work.
Each planetary cooldown offers a brief window to freely explore a dramatically changed surface.
Terraformed landscape opens new building possibilities, spawns bonus-providing pickables, and lets you evolve your research-essential technology by extracting and refining new planetary resources. Specialised structures further let you transform, combine, and amplify what you gather.
Field Labs introduce new assignments for alters to continue their work while you cryosleep. But will they change once faced with the vulnerability of ageing?

Great dlc and for a great price!
Polecam.
"Last Variable" is a great addition to the world of "The Alters." If you enjoyed the base game and just want more of this world and this story, Last Variable delivers a surprisingly long and very fun, more in-depth gameplay focused experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. It doesn't have as strong of a story or nearly as strong of characters as the base game, and the endings may fall flat for some, but "Last Variable" makes up for it with a very fun gameplay system that adds so much depth to the base game's resource manangement. My only complaint is that in the later game its pretty easy to get super overpowered and not have to worry at all about resources, especially since you kind of have to just wait for some story events to happen to progress. Overall, "Last Variable" is a great expansion, and it practically feels like a sequel with its 10-20+ hour campaign. If you didn't enjoy the base game, this won't win you over, but if you loved the base game and just want more, this is for you. It doubles down on what worked with the fundamental mechanics of the base game, while allowing the gameplay to shine more with very in depth progression. 8/10 P.S - PC performance leaves something to be desired. The framerate chugs in certain areas, especially when a key event happens that changes some areas.
You'll freak out when you realize how much gameplay they added in a single DLC in 2026' era
More alters more better
Bravo 11 bit studios! You have outdone yourself with the DLC! In last variable, you take on Jan the scientist, who create scientist alters to explore the Oasis. Jan the scientist said " we are all scientists, this must be smooth sailing, right?" Bu the alters, like in the base game, is faar from that! All the scientists has distinct personalities, unique background, and some very flavorful quests and conversations. The gameplay itself takeplaces on a large map that you will explore again and again, and really expanded on the resource gathering/resource extraction aspect. It gets really complicated! But fun to figure out!
Especially the time booster!
The base building aspect is also a step up (down?) as you need to navigate obstacles in the underground bunker. The pacing is much more intense than the base game, the first few cycles are easy and chill, but the latter one asking you to optimize your workflow while dealing with events, and trying to explore the mystery of the Oasis. As usual, the visual and the music is stunning, and the ending, is chief kiss! What a ending! For the dev, I wish there could be more conversation with JanBot, just casual ones. There are also some minor bugs and glitches such as when a new alter is born the convo could bug out, and sometime you get stuck on climbing. I also wish there is bit more guidance on the
doubler buidling
, as it is crucial to late game production. The combat could also be optimized. Overall it is an amazing DLC if you enjoy the Alters!
