Reviews
The Abyssal Maze is a surprisingly engaging experience with a strong atmosphere and great visual design. The environments look really nice and pull you into the eerie maze right away. The game does a great job building suspense. What makes it interesting is how challenging it can be—sometimes even a bit annoying in a good way. That frustration actually adds to the replay value, because you want to go back, improve, and finally overcome the obstacles. Overall, it’s a fun and tense game that keeps you coming back for more.
Short, Spooky, and Brutally Hard The atmosphere in this game is spot on—it’s genuinely creepy and keeps you on edge. The competitive gameplay with the zombies adds a great layer of tension that makes every run feel high-stakes. There are three labyrinths in total, and while the first two were a blast, the difficulty spike is real. I’ll be honest: I couldn't solve or even come close to beating the last labyrinth. It’s an absolute beast. If you love a challenge and a scary setting, definitely check this out, but prepare to get lost!
need some save, i find the game difficult but i liked it
This game is hard and the developer did not lie about it. This is the first game that the developer made and I love the fact that he takes time to listen our reviews and then to go and fixes the issues. After talking with the developer he told me that this game is an introduction to the story that he has in mind, although he did not tell me the the full story, the game contain small hints through the notes, achievements and gameplay. Also there are easter eggs that people will understand when the second game comes out. Although the game does not have fancy visuals it balances out by the stress and creepiness through the ambient sounds, dark corners and jumpscares that you do not expect. The part that I hate and love the most is when you are almost at the end of finishing a maze and then something starts to hunt you. The stress and adrenaline is real. I will give it a solid 7/10 since there is room for improvement and also for a first game it's pretty good work.
this game is extremely challenging for people that like a creepiness and stealth the 2nd level is one of the most heart racing as you try hard to not die lol i have 11 hours on the game from trying a few times
GAME IS GOOD NEEDS A LIL WORK BUT IT WAS GOOD. I JUST SUCK AT MAZE GAMES....
This game is unforgiving. It keeps you stressed from start to finish, as a horror game should. I loved it.
I’ll be honest: the game is challenging, but also addictive in a unique way. I fully recommend it if you enjoy horror games. From what I understand, the first maze serves as an introduction. I also appreciate that the developer lets you skip levels once they’re unlocked at one point I accidentally started a new game and lost my save, but then realized I could skip back to where I was.
The Abyssal Maze is a survival horror experience that embraces a straightforward but effective concept: place the player inside a hostile labyrinth, remove any sense of security, and force them to find a way out while being relentlessly stalked by terrifying creatures. Developed and published by AbyssalEdgeStudios, the game centers on a world consumed by darkness where humanity has been transformed into monstrous beings. According to the game's premise, three ancient books hidden deep within a cursed maze may hold the key to ending the catastrophe, making the player's journey not only a fight for survival but also a desperate mission to save what remains of civilization. The game's greatest strength lies in its atmosphere. Rather than relying on excessive visual spectacle, it creates fear through uncertainty and isolation. Every corridor feels threatening, every turn could reveal danger, and the constant possibility of encountering an enemy keeps tension high from beginning to end. The environment is intentionally oppressive, using darkness, confined spaces, and unsettling sound effects to make exploration feel uncomfortable in the best possible way. Horror fans who enjoy suspense-driven experiences will likely appreciate how the game maintains a sense of dread throughout its progression. Exploration serves as the foundation of the gameplay. Players must navigate a series of mazes, searching for important items and uncovering the hidden books necessary to progress. This objective sounds simple on paper, but the execution becomes increasingly demanding as the levels grow larger and more complex. Remembering pathways, identifying safe routes, and avoiding dead ends become essential skills. The maze design encourages careful observation and rewards players who pay attention to their surroundings instead of rushing forward blindly. One of the more appealing aspects of The Abyssal Maze is its commitment to making players feel vulnerable. There are no powerful weapons or easy solutions that eliminate the danger. The monsters inhabiting the labyrinth are persistent threats that must be avoided rather than confronted. This design choice reinforces the survival horror identity of the game, ensuring that every encounter carries genuine tension. Escaping pursuit often feels more satisfying than defeating enemies would, as survival becomes the true measure of success. The game is structured around three primary stages, each increasing the challenge significantly. Early sections provide enough breathing room for players to understand the mechanics and adapt to the environment, while later areas become far more demanding. The increasing complexity of the mazes, combined with stronger pressure from enemy encounters, creates a steady progression curve. Players who enjoy difficult horror games will appreciate the growing intensity, though newcomers to the genre may find some portions frustrating due to the deliberate emphasis on challenge and navigation. Visually, the game favors function over spectacle. The graphics are not designed to compete with larger-budget horror productions, but they effectively support the atmosphere the developers are aiming for. Lighting, shadows, and environmental design work together to create a world that feels unsettling and mysterious. Sound design arguably plays an even larger role, with ambient noises and sudden audio cues contributing significantly to the game's ability to generate fear and anticipation. Another positive aspect is the developer's continued support through updates and improvements. Adjustments to gameplay balance, additional scares, animation enhancements, and various quality-of-life improvements show an effort to refine the experience after release. Such support is particularly valuable for an independent horror title, demonstrating a willingness to listen to feedback and strengthen the overall package. The Abyssal Maze is not a game that tries to reinvent the horror genre. Instead, it focuses on delivering a concentrated experience built around exploration, tension, and survival. Its story remains relatively minimal compared to narrative-heavy horror adventures, and some players may find the repeated maze navigation occasionally repetitive. However, the strong atmosphere, constant sense of danger, and rewarding feeling of overcoming difficult sections help the game stand out among smaller independent horror releases. For players who enjoy being lost in dark environments, solving navigational challenges, and surviving against overwhelming odds, The Abyssal Maze offers an engaging and suspenseful journey. It successfully captures the fear of the unknown while providing enough challenge to keep the experience memorable long after the final escape. Rating: 6/10
The dev is pro-AI. The achievement art is AI-generated and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the code was as well. Avoid if you have a human soul. I only got this game because it was gifted to me through a Steam curator I run. Said Steam curator has <10 followers and isn't even a year old, so I gave the game a shot because I was flattered they'd considered me at all. I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ around with it on stream with my friends for, like, 15 minutes? It's whatever, we had a good time but it wasn't because the game was anything special. The jumpscares are more funny than scary (there's one enemy who screams and charges at you but doesn't attack and seemingly fades out of existence a second after they make themselves known; my friend compared it to a Digital Circus gag), and the difficulty the store page hypes up is more driven by (intentional?) obtuseness than actually challenging gameplay. Even next to games like Slender and Baldi's Basics (which both share a similar gameplay structure to this game), Abyssal Maze comes off as extremely directionless. I'd pin part of that on the fact that the maze itself is a giant nothingburger in every sense of the word. But that kind of lack of polish can be charming in its own right. It's like watching a play done by your local community theater. It's never going to be Broadway, or even off-Broadway, but all the actors and crew are just doing it for the love of the game and that energy is hard not to get sucked into. That charm dies on arrival if there's any AI involved. It stops feeling like an earnest attempt from someone getting into game development for the first time and more like slop farted out to make a quick buck. It stops feeling like someone looking wide eyed at other indie horror games and getting inspired to make their own, it feels like someone looking ruefully at other indie horror games and flippantly saying "psssh, I could do that!" There is no ethical use of AI , and you can give your $1.99 to someone who doesn't let robots do the hard parts for them. I don't want to sound like that guy who's too woke to have fun, believe me, I don't. And I'm sure some people reading this will just dig their heels in and double down on their AI slop just to trigger the radical left or whatever. I was initially much more positive about this game, not because it's actually "good," but because it reminded me of watching my friends try to make their own fighting game back in high school (and how I overenthusiastically tried to contribute with character design and moveset ideas). It was nostalgic, and I wanted to help nurture that creative spirit. I don't feel anything now knowing the dev is pro-AI. It tells me that creative spirit intrinsically isn't there.
