Tetris® Effect: Connected

Tetrishead Ozzy here! As someone who has spent countless hours with many Tetris titles, I wanted to share my thoughts on what I believe is one of the most distinctive entries in the series. Pros: Tetris Effect: Connected is an outstanding achievement in both gameplay and presentation. Nearly every aspect of its core design feels carefully crafted, from the satisfying mechanics to its audiovisual spectacle. Whether playing with a controller or keyboard, the controls feel exceptionally responsive and intuitive, setting a standard that I genuinely wish more modern Tetris games would follow for both competitive and casual audiences. Where many Tetris games focus almost exclusively on gameplay, Tetris Effect embraces music and visuals as equally important components of the experience. The result is one of the most visually stunning and emotionally engaging puzzle games I have ever played. Every stage feels alive, with dynamic effects and music that evolve alongside your gameplay, creating moments that are both exciting and surprisingly immersive. The variety of modern mechanics and game modes also gives the game remarkable depth. I regularly use Tetris Effect as a practice tool because it constantly challenges different aspects of my decision-making, speed, and consistency while remaining enjoyable throughout. Replayability is another major strength. The Journey mode encourages repeated playthroughs as you improve your scores and rankings, while the online multiplayer modes, including Score Attack, Zone Battle, Connected, and Connected VS, continue to provide engaging competition. Even years after release, there is still an active community to play with. Whether you’re competing online or playing cooperatively with friends, both locally and over the internet, the game makes an excellent addition to any game night. The Effect Modes deserve special recognition for offering creative twists on classic Tetris gameplay. My personal favorites are Master, Combo, and Mystery, each providing unique challenges inspired by mechanics from previous entries in the franchise while introducing their own identity. They strike a satisfying balance between accessibility and mastery, making them approachable while still rewarding improvement. Negatives: As incredible as the experience is, several issues hold the game back. The most significant is optimization. For a game this visually polished with such a dedicated player base, performance on lower-end hardware is disappointing. The Steam Deck, in particular, feels like an ideal platform for a game that lends itself so well to quick sessions, yet it suffers from notable performance issues. Community members have repeatedly raised these concerns, and similar complaints have appeared regarding Enhance’s newer title, Lumines: Arise. Unfortunately, these concerns have received little meaningful acknowledgment or resolution, which is frustrating for players using portable or less-powerful hardware. Even on stronger systems, optimization can still be an issue. One of the first things I found myself doing was lowering particle effects and increasing the game’s brightness simply to maintain comfortable performance and visibility on my relatively high-end gaming laptop. While the artistic presentation is undeniably beautiful, there are moments where the visual effects become distracting during gameplay. In some cases, they can even make extended play sessions uncomfortable, especially for players who are more sensitive to bright or busy visuals. The online ranking system also feels questionable. In my experience, Skill Ratings do not always reflect a player's actual ability. At the time of writing, I am a Tier 6 player and have already defeated multiple Tier 10 opponents across both Zone Battle and Score Attack. While individual matches are never definitive proof of ranking accuracy, the inconsistency suggests that the matchmaking and rating system could benefit from refinement. Additionally, I feel the multiplayer offerings could have gone even further. Restricting certain modes to only two or four players feels unnecessarily limiting. Large-scale variations, such as a Tetris 99-inspired Zone Battle or a massive Score Attack mode, would greatly increase replay value and create more exciting competitive experiences. Likewise, a progression-focused Tower mode similar to the one found in TETR.IO would fit perfectly with the game’s overarching themes of growth, transcendence, and self-improvement. Conclusion: Despite its shortcomings, Tetris Effect: Connected remains one of the finest Tetris experiences available today. Its breathtaking presentation, satisfying gameplay, creative mechanics, and amount of game modes create an experience unlike anything else in the genre. The game’s technical issues and lack of recent updates are disappointing, particularly given that it remains Enhance’s flagship title and one of the most visually impressive puzzle games ever created. However, none of these flaws overshadow what the game accomplishes at its best. If you have hardware capable of running it well, Tetris Effect: Connected is an easy recommendation. Few games capture the feeling of playing Tetris with such style, atmosphere, and emotional impact, and even fewer continue to feel this rewarding after hundreds of hours.
