Tankenstein is a 3rd person ARPG where the player controls a dishevelled tank in a post apocalyptic wasteland looking for new parts to survive and upgrade itself. All of the other tanks in the scrapyard have the same goal, which makes them hostile in this survival of the fittest arena.

About

Fight through a wasteland filled with rogue AI tanks that seek your destruction. Use clever strategies to destroy them before they destroy you, then lay claim to their parts to build the ultimate vehicle of destruction.
Featuring an in depth damage and projectile system, you will be rewarded for precise shooting and learning your opponents weak spots.

Trawl the wasteland for the scrap of the old world, and fight through hazardous environments to find the tools you need to survive and give yourself an edge in every battle.

Mix and match increasingly powerful gear scavenged from the wasteland to build a Franken-tank of looted parts. Separately upgrade your CPU by cannibalising the mind of your opponents to gain the ultimate edge in the final survival of the fittest.

The wasteland is a procedurally generated world of devastated environments. Each new biome provides a unique challenge for your vehicle. Master each to maintain the strategic advantage at all times.

Fight difficult bosses that challenge your build and tactics to become the dominant AI tank in the wasteland.

So imma seperate my review into 3 pros, cons and additions/changes id like to see. Pros: - The Potential is Massive and could be a really great game but it also could go a bad direction which is hopefully not the case. - The Tiers feel approachable and not too easy nor too hard. - The bosses are a fun mechanic. - Loot is fun and easy to learn - Parts and CPU upgrades are fun to mess with and being able to choose how you start a run whether with tier 1 stuff or the tier you have upgraded too is nice. Cons: - At times feels abit empty or "samey" - No Proper armour models so penetration stats feel both weak and useless at times, Penetration is based on angle and even if you have nothing buffing penetration you can easily destroy anything if you play it right, You could take a tier 1 gun for example and kill a tier 10 tank which seems like the only way that should be possible is if you shoot the rear where the least armour should be. - Unless im wrong about this there is a max of 4 Major CPU upgrades you can have in a match. (3 Boss ones and 1 Lootbox one seems to be the cap of lootbox CPUs) - Only Medium tank parts (although there was mentions of light/heavy tracks coming in the patch notes, although I hope thats translates to guns, Turrents, Hulls etc) - the gun calbres are machine gun, auto cannon, 75mm, 120mm and 183mm yet dont really act like their actual war counterparts at all. Yes 183mms have the highest damage and lowest reload of the guns however the damage increase is negligible and the reload is rather low for that calibre, oh and the 183mm looks very skinny and nothing like an actual 183mm. (that might be a slight nitpick) - The "Endgame" (which has been labled as temporary) is kinda sh*t tbh, you kill the third boss and can choose to either continue (which I like for grinding) or face the hunters (OP tanks that drop nothing, kill you too fast and if you dont find a boss arena next to both a safe shooting position and an extraction makes it impossible to complete the optional mission of killing 10 hunters, oh and if you wait too long or get unlucky many will spawn and obliterate you no matter how much skill you have lol) Plus the rewards could be better when choosing the hunt, your at the end of the game at least reward me like its the end of the game. I have 32 hours and only tier 6 Core upgrades lol, I could just have chosen to grind to tier 11 and farm tanks basically infinitely but that gets boring fast, especially since you lose the sense of progression with distance since there is a kill wall at about 31000ms. -AIs need a change of some type, battles with almost always the same since they just shoot you when they see you and dont have any mechanics to make one fight more interesting than another. Some ideas will be below. Things id want Changed/Added: - Tank Classes like Light tanks, Medium Tanks, Heavy Tanks and/or Tank Destroyers. They would all work rather differently from each other. For Example Light Tanks: Being faster than normal and making AIs have a hard time hitting moving targets, but less firepower. Medium Tanks: More firepower than both Light tanks and Heavy tanks but not Tank Destroyers, Harder to penetrate from Light tanks (not immune just a chance based to pen or if you add an armour mechanic) Heavy Tanks: Slower than Medium thanks and much slower than Light tanks. Often Harder hitting than meds/lights but slower reload than both. Good armour either lower chance to not pen or add an armour mechanic Tank Destroyers: No turret (Historical turrets like the hellcat in this game could go to the light tanks instead) Biggest guns up to a sturm tigers gun calibre would be awesome. Best damage output at the sacrifice of a turret and general mobility/traverseability. Reloads Varying as well as Armour. -Dont be afraid to explore futuristic tanks or even pre ww2 tanks if you want more tiers/variety. -More Variety (like whats been annouced in the roadmap although the roadmaps doesnt seem to go in much detail nor feels like a full roadmap even if its stated as one) Things like random events (hopefully no BS ones and if there is BS ones make them very rare but rewarding) Special modules that have very interesting mechanics or ways they work. For example Magma fun/Tesla gun is kinda unfun in the game as they have no electracution or burning effects making them feel underwhelming for the damage trade off they lose. Maybe new modes like limited time to get as high as possible and get good scrap multipliers for making it up higher tiers. Maybe a slow mode with a more complicated progression system. Maybe a gamemode that allows you to alter a bunch of things increasing or decreasing scrap multipliers based on if they are an upside or downside. Like forced sniper view, no radar, enemies are two tiers higher than the loot they drop making them bigger threats earlier on, or Upsides like respawning by choice (But halves or even quarters the scrap multiplier and respawn is disabled when the hunters have been activated unless the endgame changes to be better and fit unlimited respawns) Those are just some examples of gamemodes that could be added but plenty of flexibility with this game imo. - Expand the playable zone (if possible make it near unlimited or at least not doable to make it too) -Make certain terrain elements either semi transparent so you can see the AIs shooting you like the thick dead trees. As it is annoying being shot by a tank I can see, that or make it so AIs cant see through them either unless they get shot through them. However Hard cover should stay non transparent. -This is a minor one but needed imo and thats a red tier and better colour differences. Green and Yellow Beams are almost the same colour and I know im not colourblind, also light blue and dark blue as beams arnt able to be seen, same with light green and dark green, and light purple and dark purple, as well as yellow and gold. Oh and maybe them cool names like Common, uncommon, rare etc although you might need a new naming system since there is so many tiers, maybe just tier colours as names underneath the item name or special made up names. -The ability to choose what starting parts you have unlocked (as long as its within your tier bracket or lower) for example im tier 6 with guns which is one of the tiers that has tesla guns but I always start with a boring 75mm. -Part Destruction could be worked on, maybe have a system where if it goes down to 0% HP its destroyed temorarily and is fully unable to work but repairs to a semiworking function after a few seconds being not as good but still working at 0% for example losing the gun would cripple your firepower entirely for abit then lowers it when in semi repaired state, only going back to fully working if healed above 0% Making crippling AIs beneficial as well rather than just aiming at the part that takes the most damage like engine if you see it or tracks as a second option. -Parts Very Rarely Gaining special effects like a gun that slows the target if you shoot them, or a stun shot that shuts down a tank for 1 second when hit. Or an Engine that can move twice the speed of a normal engine but always increases heat if moving (can be counteracted by heat disipation but is both hard too and if it does go under your heat disipation (so you can always move without heat but the left over heat disipation is all that is left to cooldown the gun) etc theres alot of minor but cool benefits you could attach to parts. Now this is a very long review and you might notice the cons/things I want added/changed is very large so why am I still recommending this game? Even if I didnt go in huge detail of why this game is good and had alot to say for changes and such is because I see so much potenial in this game and it is fun even in its current state, I do have 32 hours in the game and see myself still playing it for more. Its not an expensive game for what it is and worth seeing where it goes.

World of Tanks veteran here. Started in 2012, 50K+ battles, purple WN8, 60%+ winrate, fully cooked by 13 years of premium tank milk-farming, rigged matchmaking and multiplayer toxicity. And then I found Tankenstein. This game is basically Steel Hunter after drinking motor oil, moving into the mountains, and deciding to actually be fun. The graphics are simpler, sure, but who cares? The gameplay is hilarious, tense, clever and weirdly addictive. The radar actually works, the tanks feel good, and unlike World of Tanks, every hill is not made of soap. You can become the mountain goat tank you were always meant to be. The upgrade system is also great: loot parts from dead tanks, slap them onto your own metal Frankenstein monster, repair the broken junk, climb tiers, make terrible decisions, die because of one stupid mistake, and immediately start again while laughing like a maniac. I honestly haven’t had this much fun with a tank game in years. It is slower, simpler, cheaper-looking, and somehow more fun than the giant tank casino I escaped from. 10/10, I came for tanks and stayed for the emotional healing.
It seems fun and addictive until you discover that the game is definitely rigged against you. It will feel odd at times how the enemy finds you when you are weakest and sneaks trough your scans when you change your parts, recycling or upgrading, or how it somehow has brutal aim even at very high range, or how enemy shots almost never bounce off you but your bounce off the enemy at least of 40% of times. The more you play. the less odd and more intentional it feels.
I din't know I needed a Mad Max and World of Tanks hybrid game. Until today.
I don't normally write reviews but I wanted to give Tankenstein and its developers the recognition they deserve. While the game is a little simple when it comes to graphics and the world, it overall is a fantastic game. The gameplay loop is a lot of fun. I really have no complaints other than the world still feels a little empty, I would love to see more events or things to explore similar to a boss. Maybe a story mode would be great in the future as well. Overall I highly recommend a purchase, there is far more content than in the past and the current challenges have me coming back game after game
There's a way to save, but I sunk an hour in and didn't make it that far. Game doesn't respect my time enough to let me save so I've refunded it. Saving shouldn't force me through a boss fight first. I'm not going to use the starter tank again, that ♥♥♥♥ was painful.
Very fun. -Its pretty sandbox in that you have no time limit and can just keep rolling around killing tanks. -The different modules are fun to mix and match. -The enemy tanks are rather strong if they get you in a bad spot, difficulty is right where it needs to be.
So simple, yet so much fun. Collect parts, shoot tanks, steal their parts. Repeat until you have the tank of your dreams. Or are killed by the tank of your nightmares.
I'm not sure if tanks spawn in randomly or if some of them cant be detected sometimes. I will have nothing within 600 meters from me, I will destroy the closest tank and then 2 or 3 tanks appear within 300 meters seconds later The grind is slow for upgrades and the other tanks can wreck you very easily in early areas, even if you are upgraded to tier 2 or 3 from the permanent upgrade system. I died in 2 shots with full armor for my hull. I hit the enemy tank 5 times in the same spot without them going down in the 3 tier zone.
This game is a lot of fun but also frustrating. It takes a lot of time to slowly get your tank upgraded, and then you can die so fast. You get incremental upgrades that make your next start a little stronger, but it is a rinse and repeat. It's a game that you play and die until you get a longer more successful run, and then when you inevitably die on that one, you get temporarily fed up and stop. But you keep coming back later to try again. :) As some have recently stated in the discussions, the main problem I have with the game is that enemies spawn and beeline to you while you are in the repair and upgrade menu. I think that should really just pause the game until you leave the menu. Less realistic, sure, but this is a game.
